Important Qualities That Clinicians Must Keep In Mind: Communication: Physical Therapists must be able to listen attentively to what patients tell them and must be able to explain what they want their patients to do. Compassion: Physical Therapists are typically interested in the profession by a desire to help people and improve their daily lives. Therapists must be sensitive to a patient’s needs and concerns, especially when assisting the patient with his or her personal activities. Flexibility: Physical Therapists must be flexible when treating patients. Because not every type of therapy will work for each patient, therapists may need to be creative when determining the treatment plans and adaptive devices that best suit each patient’s needs. Interpersonal Skills: Because Physical Therapists spend their time teaching and explaining therapies to patients, they should be able to earn the trust and respect of those patients and their families. Patience: People may get frustrated when dealing with disabilities, injuries, and illnesses. Physical Therapists should be patient to provide quality care to the people they serve. Writing Skills: When communicating in writing with other members of the patient’s medical team, Physical Therapists must be able to explain clearly the treatment plan for the patient and any progress made by the patient. Ethics: Brandon’s own personal belief: ethics is an essential quality in today’s ever changing environment. Characteristics For Hiring Managers In The “Numbers Business”: They often look at you as $$ signs. They are primarily focused on filling the position. They are willing to offer the job on the spot with limited interview process. They are typically not invested in your success or future. They often make empty promises. They are often not focused on if the PT position is a fit for you long term. © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Characteristics For Hiring Managers In The “People Person Business”: They are invested in you and your professional success. They often do a lot of listening and are focused on the evaluation of you and your skill set. They want to get to know you both as a professional and also as a person. They bring hard data and facts along with making sure you have reality on what it takes to be successful in the position. They see themselves as advisors and not recruiters. They are “big picture” people that are relationship oriented. © 2015 Every Child Achieves, Inc. © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. 8 3/10/2016 Strategizing For A Successful Career: In the words of Henry Ford, “Before everything else, getting ready is the secret of success!” © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Tips for getting ready: Research, Research, Research! Research current factors impacting the setting that you are interested in for employment. Research every company that you are applying for a job. Research data on salaries, benefits, and training provided for the setting, so your expectations are realistic. Research the learning curve of the type of position that you are exploring. Research yourself and what you are hoping to achieve professionally in the next five years. © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Helpful Resources For Research: The Starting Point! A resume should look professional. A Simple design goes a long way! (no pink paper, no flashy designs, etc.). A resume’s purpose is to communicate your most relevant skill sets. A resume is a black and white communication of qualifications as it relates to your desired position. © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Two Common Formats For Resumes: Chronological: This kind of resume is created based on past experiences. It typically has fewer headings and lists experience in a reverse chronological order. Functional: This format consists of headings (related skills &expertise, professional experience, etc.) I prefer a functional resume format for “new grads.” Additional Tips: (My Personal Preferences) Font Type: Use Times New Roman, Calibri, Verdana, Arial or another plain font throughout the resume. Font Size: 10-12 pt. for the primary body of resume with your name in 16-18 pt. format Layout: Margins 0.5 to 0.9 © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Resume Disclaimer: The following resumes have been altered to protect the identity of the candidates. The majority of content is real information. There are examples of both OT and PT resumes because this is more about the structure of a resume and you can learn a lot from the following resumes. The purpose of sharing these resumes is to give feedback and perspectives for you to keep in mind when composing your resumes. Please be aware that all of the following advice is truly recommendations, and there is no “black and white” way of crafting resumes; therefore, this is truly my advice based on 12+ years of hiring employees. © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. © 2015 Every Child Achieves, Inc. 10 3/10/2016 Generic Functional Resume Format Page 1 of 2 Page 2 of 2 © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. I would change the header: • Include full address • Formatting of header should be sized proportionally to resume format I prefer resume formats without an “objective section” however if you include one then it should be concise. My preference is a cover letter. I think that the “selected contributions” is very unique and appreciate about this resume highlights this. © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Hold off on utilizing graphic dividers that make it hard to read the “section title.” I like both these sections: “Conferences And Workshops” along with “Papers And Publications” © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. © 2015 Every Child Achieves, Inc. 12 3/10/2016 Ever Applied For A Position And Never Heard From The Company? There are several reasons why this occurs: Automated Tracking Systems (ATS) that streamline processes from a company Applicants don’t stand out and make an impact on hiring manager Internal staff member promoted to position Additional reasons may apply but above are some concepts to be aware of © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Purpose Of A Cover Letter: Cover letters are essential to a “hiring manager in the people business” because they allow hiring managers to see your general communication skills and gives the hiring manager a glimpse into what attracts you to the position. Cover letters are personalized to each company. Please note that “cookie-cutter cover letters” are pointless; therefore, personalize everything! Communication is one of the most important things that I look at when hiring new clinicians. © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Brandon’s Cover Letter Preferences: Cover letter should be personally addressed to the direct hiring manager. Cover letter should illustrate that you have knowledge of the company and the position. Cover letter should express 2-3 qualifications that make you the right fit for the position, and it should be linked to qualifications that are outlined in the job description/job post. Cover letter should share a little bit about you and your passion for why you came into this field. Cover letter should always ask for the opportunity to meet and discuss your qualifications and the position in more detail. © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. © 2015 Every Child Achieves, Inc. 13 3/10/2016 SAMPLE BODY OF A COVER LETTER © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Stand Out: Make an Everlasting Impression! Dress to impress (please do not show up in scrubs). Shake hands and look people in the eye. Send a thank you note to anyone that you meet (handwritten letters make a huge impression). Communicate clearly with passion to show your interest in the company and the position. Express your professional goals so that a company knows what you are trying to accomplish and how the position aligns with your goals. © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. Brandon’s Conclusion: We have lots of factors influencing our industry and job market. It is essential to go the extra mile in doing proper research, preparation and make an everlasting impression! We are in the “people business” therefore, we must communicate, connect and create a better tomorrow together! © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc. © 2015 Every Child Achieves, Inc. 14 3/10/2016 Brandon’s Contact Info Email: [email protected] Office Phone: (818) 760-0501 / Direct Phone: (818) 392-5888 Website: www.everychildachieves.com Location: 6400 Laurel Canyon Blvd. Ste. 600 North Hollywood, CA 91606 © 2016 Every Child Achieves, Inc.
