Training on the Peter Jans golf course in January, several workouts on the ETHS outdoor track, and only a single tempo run on the treadmills at SPAC. The mild Chicago winter positively impacted our training and our attitudes. When I reflect on this past winter quarter, my thoughts go to our sophomore class. Like many Chicagoans, our sophomores are attributing the ease of this winter to the weather. And to a point, I agree. But I’d like to believe that much of this winter’s ease for that group was due in part to the positive leaders ahead of them, coaches who challenged their decisions to run, and ultimately their hearts confirming that the sacrifices they make as a DI runner, at a Big Ten school, and at a prestigious university are well worth it. When you are fully committed, those sacrifices become accepted as a way of life. The sense of missing out on something else becomes a foreign thought. You find yourself obsessing over the small details that will make you the best you are capable of being. All merely life lessons anyone can carry with them for the rest of their lives. Just last week I received a card from one of our alums that kept a smile on my face all day. It simply said, “I’m so proud to be a NUXC alum.” For this sophomore class, many before them, and including this proud alum, I firmly believe the challenges happened for a reason. Conquering the obstacles gave them a feeling of success. They are reminders that nothing worthwhile comes easy. And as Bernice Johnson Reagan once said, “ Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.” My hope for all who are NUXC... to be proud. 2012 Outdoor Track Schedule March 31st Ted Haydon Invitational (Chicago, IL) April 6th-7th 13th -14th 20th-21st 21st 26th -28th Chicagoland Championships (Chicago, IL) Dave Rankin Invite (W. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Gerry Smith 1972-76 BA, Math & Economics By Janelle Li-A-Ping (Jr.) As the weather heats up and the flowers start to bloom, NUXC is starting a new chapter on the outdoor track. Coming off the heels of a successful indoor season filled with numerous lifetime PRs and personal breakthroughs, we expect nothing less in our competitive spring track season. Looking back on the previous two tracks seasons I’ve experienced, I can’t say I’ve ever been more excited to see my fellow teammates compete. Despite our workouts growing increasingly more difficult, I’ve seen us persevere and take that same determination to the starting line. I am incredibly impressed at the fire I see in each and every one of my teammates, whether they’re cross training or running right beside me in tempo runs. I’ve seen us grow year after year, and I believe our team is stronger and fitter than it’s ever been. Personally, I’ve seen myself grow immensely from freshman year. I remember clocking in over 22 minutes in my first 5K, as well my subsequent injuries and ailments that followed me into sophomore year. It’s hard to believe I am now capable of running sub-18 minute 5Ks just two years later. My improvement has taught me the importance of not only believing you are capable of reaching your goals, but putting in the time and effort to make it happen. I find it extremely exciting to see my teammates taking away the same lessons, taking care of their bodies and going the extra mile in their training. I have no doubt we’re prepared to tear up the track this spring, and prove to others that Northwestern can be a competitive force in our untraditional season.
