The name flows really well!
Everyone at JMC reads the federalist papers, so it's a fun tribute to
something that everybody does together, and the ice cream should be
red, white & blue as a tribute to our background in governance and public
service!

The Federalist Papers are core of JMC!
Every James Madison freshman has to read the Federalist Papers, which
are various treatises that were written by the founders to garner
support for the Constitution. Indeed, the US Constitution is the first thing
Madison freshmen study and is the foundation fo th erest of their time at
the college, regardless of their final major. Because of this, I included
"Constitutional" (or Chonstitutional s the case may be) in the name.
Furthermore, James Madison is well known for a curriculum that is heavy
on reading and writing. Madison students will often work late into the
night on papers, requiring large doses of caffeine. A coffee flavored ice
cream is especially appropriate to represent JMC.

Whiskey ice cream with apple
cinnamon swirl and pecans
In Federalist no. 51 the college's namesake laid out his vision for the
structure of republican government. Madison recognized that institutions
need to be checked and balanced by and against each other to prevent
tyranny. Had he turned his attention to ice cream, Madison would have
felt the same way. A scoop of Federalist 51 is perfectly balanced. It starts
out with the harsh bite of a whiskey base because, as Madison knew, men
are not angels. This quintessentially American spirit is then sweetened
with a swirl of cinnamon apples, a nod to the fruit Benjamin Franklin loved
so much, he asked his wife to ship him barrels full when he was away
from home.
The hum of the warm cinnamon, apple, and whiskey are then punctuated
with the crunch of pecans, which were grown on the estates of both
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Each ingredient works with
and against the other so that no one flavor dominates. Instead, a bite of
Federalist 51 blends into a harmonious whole - a little boozy, a little firey,
a little sweet, and a little nutty - like the people who make this country
great.

Every
Madison
has to read Alexis De Tocqueville as it's a
cornerstone of the Madison education. Turnt is a fun slant word these
days which rhymes with Burnt - and the flavor is reminiscent of smores.
Also unlike just naming it after Madison or JMC it will introduce the
consumer to maybe a name they don't know. After all it is the goal of a
Madisonian to always educate.
My degree from JMC is in International Relations. I think right now, more
than ever, it's important to remember that we live in a global world
where people and flavors are different and interesting. I especially picked
a middle-Eastern flavored ice cream to help foster and interest and
appreciation for the Middle East.
Espresso for all-nighters, salted caramel for spirited discourse and
chocolate covered graham crackers for tradition with a twist.
The chocolate ice cream draws all power into its impetuous vortex of
caramel fudge, with factions of Graham cracker scattered throughout.
Every JMC student has to read Tocqueville's Democracy in America which
leads to understanding the American republic. This tasty flavor with have
both current students and alumni reminiscing about their days in MC201.

JMC is a public affairs/policy college, so jurisprudence is a of utmost
importance and the extra "j" adjective makes it more fun. The
java/espresso flavor is due to the fact that hard working JMC students,
professors, administrators, and alumnus will never turn down a cup of
coffee to keep them productive. The caramel/fudge and chocolate chunks
not only are a tasty addition, but they also serve to represent the
diversity in opinion and background of JMC professors and students.

As a freshman, we were required to read Kant's Perpetual Peace for our
MC 201 seminar. He was then referenced/read heavily (in some majors
more than others) throughout the next 4 years.
In honor of one of our founding fathers, John Jay. He was the first Chief
Justice of the US, hence the name.
Whiskey base with ribbons of
caramel
James Madison supported the whiskey distillers during the Whiskey
Rebellion and was a member of the Presidential Administration that
removed the Whiskey Tax in 1801. Many whiskey distillers were also from
Madison's home state of Virginia. Caramel alliterates with Constitutional
Convention and I think would taste quite nice with the whiskey ice cream.

I decided I would name my ice cream after our Dean of Students,
Sherman Garnett. He is incredibly important to the functions of our
wonderful college and I thought I would honor him in this way. Also, I got
the idea for the cherry flavor from Dean Garnett's first name.

If Men Were Angels…
Vanilla bourbon base with
strawberry variegate and cake
pieces
In Fed 51, Jimmy Mad wrote "But what is government itself, but the
greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no
government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither
external nor internal controls on government would be necessary." Fed 51
is one of the most famous of the Federalist Papers (after 10, of course)
and that quote is especially memorable. The ice cream ingredients are a
riff on angel food cake, but the bourbon is pure Madison. A 2010 Time
article suggests that he drank a pint of whiskey every day.

The name stands out just like James Madison. The flavor is a nice classic
All students in JMC read Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America"
essays. A Frenchman sent to study the American prison system in the
early 19th Century, he actually studied everything about early American
society to bring the best back to the then-new French Republic. Presently,
American policymakers spend a great deal of time talking about Iran, and,
though we fixat on its nuclear program, we can still notice this ice cream
flavor and celebrate it here!

Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America is required reading for all
