Warmup
- Begin the day sitting with people who share your Poem/ Work
- Please have your transcendentalism handout and annotated “Where I Lived & What I Lived For” by Henry
David Thoreau, and OPTIC/ TPCAST for your poem/painting out on your desk. Mr. Schmitz will be stamping
your work (TPCAST/OPTIC and links to Transcendentalism).
CJ : Thoreau – “Where I lived & What I lived for” (Journal 10min)
* Review your annotations and add a notes about the main idea of each paragraph in the margins.
* What aspects of society does Thoreau criticize?
note examples with paragraph #s in your journal
* In what way does Thoreau say the aspects he mentions inhibit the pursuit of happiness?
After 8 minutes or so, check in with a shoulder partner. Supplement your observations accordingly. Note new
information with a * in your journal.

AWARENESS OF TRANSCENDENTALISM & THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS THROUGH THE LENSES OF POETRY &
ART.
AFTER THE FIRST TEN MINUTES ON THOREAU….
MEET with the people who had the same poem/painting as you for 5-7 Minutes. Make sure you have the
piece mastered and can full explain the TPCAST/OPTIC & correlations with Transcendentalist ideals.
Swap – to groups of 5(6) where all 5 works are represented. BE EFFICIENT & AWARE OF
YOUR TIME. Share your poem (15 minutes- 5 minutes per person/poem (read the poem, explain it,
connect to transcendentalist ideals) – the sub will notify you when it is time to change speakers).
Annotate the highlights of the poems for the other groups in your journal. You will need the
information in the future. Use the remaining time to note additional correlations to Transcendentalist
ideas, make connections among the works, ask for any clarification.
Use any time remaining to work on Vocab.
