The wider side is to be used on the WRONG side of the garment so that when the tape is stitched in place from the RIGHT side, both edges are sure to be caught in the stitching. Curves: If tape is applied to a curved surface, first, preshape it with a steam iron. For an inward curve, stretch the double edges and press; for an outward curve, stretch the fold edge and press. 6 7 9 9 8 SELVAGE CLIP CURVES CLIP CURVES to make seams lie flat. Inner Curve - Make little clips, or snips, in the seam allowance just to, but not through, the stitching. Outer Curve - Cut little wedge-shaped notches from seam allowance. English 4642 2/4 4. Cut a piece of ribbon 19" (48.5cm) long. On OUTSIDE, glue ribbon to inner edge of frame, placing ends at one lower corner. Cut a piece of ribbon 42" (107cm) long. Glue ribbon to outer edge of frame, turning under and lapping ends at one corner. Cut a piece of ribbon 31" (78.5cm) long. Glue ribbon to front of frame, placing ribbon 3/4" (2cm) from inner edge, folding ribbon at corners, as shown, and turning under and lapping ends at one corner. 4 FLEECE / INTERFACING FLEECE / INTERFACING -Pin padding to WRONG side of project section, having raw edges even. Fuse in place, following manufacturer’s directions. 5 PIPING -To Apply, on OUTSIDE, pin piping to project edges as instructed in Sewing Directions, having cord extend beyond seam line and flat/lip edge within the seam allowance. Machine-baste as close to cord as possible without catching in the cord. NOTE: When stitching seams with piping, use a zipper or cording foot. PIPING 5. Glue back pocket cover to back pocket (poster board) as shown. Glue back pocket (fabric) to WRONG side of back pocket (poster board). BACK POCKET BACK BACK POCKET COVER 6. Apply glue to side and lower edges of back pocket. Center WRONG side of back pocket over opening on back of frame, inserting ends of 1/4"(6mm) ribbon for hanger under back pocket at upper corners. (Upper edge of back pocket is left open to insert photo.) 7 6 APPLYING PIPING To Taper Ends, pin piping in place, as above, tapering end to nothing where indicated in Sewing Directions. Machine-baste, as above. TIP FOR FABRIC COVERED CORD- Open out fabric covering and trim cord from where it will cross seam line. 7. Tie remaining ribbon into a bow and glue to frame front over ribbon as shown or as you prefer. Paint wooden number if you prefer and glue to corner of frame. To Apply To A Corner, allow extra fullness at corner and raise the presser foot, and clip the flat/lip edge up to the cording, being careful not to snip the cord. Pivot with needle in fabric at corner and continue along the next edge. PHOTO ALBUM B BATTING CORNER 1 STUFF - Pull fiberfill apart and fluff it before you use it. Break apart the lumps and thick spots. This will help to create a smoother looking project. Use pieces about the size of a tennis ball. Pack into place using the end of a long handled wooden spoon or chop-stick. Pack firmly in place each time stuffing is added. Use both hands to mold and shape, being careful not to over stuff or make lopsided. STUFF TRIM CORNERS - so the finished corner will form a sharp point when turned RIGHT side out. Cut off excess seam allowance at point and at each side. TRIM CORNERS INSIDE FRONT 1. Remove the pages from the album. Lay the album onto the batting and cut the batting 1" (2.5cm) larger than the album. Glue the batting to the album. Pull batting over edges. You will need to tuck the batting under the page holder. A dull kitchen knife can be used for this. Hold the batting in place with the clothespins until the glue dries. INSIDE BACK GLUE CENTER BAND 2 1 1/2" 1 1/2" FRAME A 7" NOTE: When cutting foam core board use a sharp mat knife to get a clean, crisp edge. Change the blade as often as necessary to make the cutting as easy as possible. A metal ruler is a good straight edge. Trace the outline of your pattern tissue onto the board. Do not try to cut through all the layers of board on the first try, but go over the cut several times until all layers are cut. 1 1 1/2" TOTAL HEIGHT 1. Cut out base of foam core board. Apply a thin layer of glue to front and outer edges of base. Center base face down onto batting and finger press in place. Wrap batting around outer edges, clipping batting at corners so that it lays flat. Trim away excess batting at outer edges. Cut out batting diagonally at opening, as shown. Apply glue to inner edges of base and wrap batting to WRONG side of base. Trim away excess batting. 2 3 2. With batting side down, center base over WRONG side of cover. Apply a glue to back side of base along outer edges. Pull cover over edge of base and finger press onto back side of base, leaving corners free. To miter corners, pull points down first and glue in place. Then bring side edges down over point, as shown. Glue in place. Hold in place with clothespins until dry. Cut out opening in cover same as you did for batting. Pull cover over edges and glue in place same as for outer edges. This is your frame front. 3. Cut out base of posterboard. Glue cover to base same as you did for frame front. This is your frame back. Glue frame front to back along inner and outer edges. © Copyright 2005—Simplicity Pattern Co., Inc. / Printed in U.S.A. / Simplicity is a registered trademark of Simplicity Pattern Co., Inc. 1 1/2" UPPER AND LOWER BANDS 2. Make a pattern for outside cover as follows: First, measure the total width of the album from the front edge of the album around the binding to the back edge of album. Using this measurement as the length, draw a 7"(18cm) wide center band out on paper adding 1-1/2"(3.8cm) to both ends. Cut out a center band from fabric. Now measure the total height of your album. Draw out the total height and width measurements on paper, adding 3"(7.5cm) to total width. Cut this section in half, lengthwise, forming two strips. These pieces are the upper and lower bands. Cut out upper and lower bands from contrast fabric. TIP: If you prefer to apply a decorative fabric panel to front of album cover, now is the time to do so. Simply press under side edges of panel and position it over center band, having upper and lower edges even. Stitch panel close to pressed edges. Baste raw edges together. 3 3. With RIGHT sides together, stitch upper and lower bands to center band in 1/2" (1.3cm) seams, as shown. This will be referred to as outside cover. English 4642 3/4 ALBUM 9 9. Glue these lining pieces, fabric side up, inside the album. Hold in place with clothespins until the glue dries. Place the pages back in the album. Cut remaining ribbon in half. Tie ribbons into bows and glue to front of album over ribbons, as shown on envelope. 4 ALBUM DIAPER BAG C OUTSIDE FABRIC 4. Center the album over the outside cover and cut the upper and lower bands so that they are 1-1/2" (3.8cm) larger than album. INSIDE COVER 1 2 NOTE: You have cut four front and back sections. Two will be referred to as facings. 1. Apply INTERFACING to front pocket. With RIGHT sides together, stitch lining to front pocket at upper edge. Trim seam. Place double sided tape along the inside edges of the album, below the batting. DOUBLE SIDE TAPE 2. Turn pocket RIGHT side out; press. Baste raw edges together. Apply INTERFACING to bag front. On OUTSIDE, pin lining side of pocket to front, matching notches and having raw edges even. Baste. Stitch pocket in place along stitching lines. 5 5. Pull fabric around the sides of the album, over the batting and press onto the tape. You will need to miter the fabric for square corners or distribute the fullness for rounded corners. Tuck the fabric under the page holder. Use glue to secure the corners and clothespins to hold them until they dry. 3 4 3. Make back pocket same as you did for front pocket stitching the two same pocket sections together. Apply INTERFACING to bag back. On OUTSIDE, pin pocket to back, matching notches and having raw edges even. Baste. 6 4. With RIGHT sides together, stitch front to front facing at double notched edge. 6. On OUTSIDE, glue ribbon to center of upper and lower bands, wrapping ends around to INSIDE of album. 5 NOTE: The inside of the album may be cut of matching or contrast fabric. 5. Turn front RIGHT side out; press. Baste raw edges together. Stitch back facing to back in same manner. 7 3" 7. If you are using an album with centered rings, cut two 3" (7.5cm) pieces of the fabric. Their length should be the height of the album. Press under the edges 1/4" (6mm) and glue one on each side of the rings. Use a kitchen knife to slide the fabric under the page holder. For photo album with off-centered rings - cut a 3" (7.5cm) strip and a 5" (12.5cm) strip instead of two 3" (7.5cm) strips of the fabric. Follow the same procedure to finish and glue them in place. The 5" (12.5cm) strip is placed on the wider of the two flaps. 3" 3" 5" 8 POSTER 8. To line the inside, measure inside the photo album from the crease to the outside edge and subtract 1-1/2" (3.8cm). This will be the width. The height is the same as the finished 3" (7.5cm) strip you just glued in place. Cut two pieces of poster board to these dimensions. Lay them over the fabric and cut two pieces that are 3/4" (2cm) larger on all sides than the poster board. Place double sided tape along the four edges of the poster board. Miter the corners and pull the fabric around the edges. For photo album with off-centered rings - the two pieces of poster board will not be the same size. Measure the wider side between the crease and the outside edge of the album and subtract 1-1/2" (3.8cm) for the width of the first piece. For the width of the second piece, measure between the rings and the outside edge of that flap and subtract 1-1/2" (3.8cm). Their heights would be the same as the finished 3" (7.5cm) and 5" (12.5cm) strips you glued in place. Cut the two pieces of poster board to these dimensions. Cut the fabric for each piece of poster board 3/4" (2cm) larger on all four sides. Place double sided tape along the four edges of the poster board. Miter the corners and pull the fabric around the edges. © Copyright 2005—Simplicity Pattern Co., Inc. / Printed in U.S.A. / Simplicity is a registered trademark of Simplicity Pattern Co., Inc. 6 6.
