II PRELIM – 2014-15 ENGLISH Set A Std.X Marks : 80 Time : 3 hrs. (Section – 1 – Reading skill, Vocabulary and Grammar) QI A) A1 Read the following passage and do the activities: Complete the table: Conventional Sources of Energy Non-conventional Sources of Energy i) i) ii) ii) 2 Even as the country‟s energy security is compromised since it depends so heavily on oil imports, India has realized that a large part of its energy security can be achieved by using what it has free of cost and in abundance all over the country, all round the year and forever – sunlight. There are numerous reasons for India to “go solar”. Solar energy is clean energy as it emits no effluents of pollutants into the atmosphere unlike the thermal energy obtained by the burning of coal or natural gas. Besides being free, solar energy is forever, unlike fossil fuels, whose stocks are getting depleted everyday without being replenished and which we will exhaust completely within a few decades unless fresh sources are available in India. The irony is that Germany does not have as many sunny days as India does, yet Germany accounts for 50% of the global market for photovoltaic cells which are used to convert sun rays into electric energy, while India accounts for 1 per cent of the global market. Solar energy is modular and scalable and can be generated at the point of use, in which case there is negligible or no loss in transmission and distribution. It is simple and quickly implementable requiring no or low gestation period. Importantly, there are no rehabilitation issues related to solar power projects as are seen in the case of mega power projects. Also, solar power projects require virtually very little maintenance. PV modules exposed to the sun can produce enough power to run the basic appliances in a home. Solar street lights, traffic signals, solar water pumps and solar lanterns are getting readily accepted. Solar water heaters can save enough electricity to pay back for their cost in three to five years. Like „universalisation of education‟ the central government should make it a national mission to achieve „universalisation of electrification.‟ A2 1) 2) A3 1. 2. It goes like this. Three mice lived in a maze with a complex array of rooms, each full of delicious cheese. The place had numerous rooms and myriad pathways. Each room was chock – a – block with cheese and the three mice spent a lot of time chewing the cheese. With no problem, it was a trio of happy and content mice. One fine day when the mice woke up, they found that the first few rooms were totally empty. Somehow, mysteriously, all the cheese had disappeared. Subsequently, two mice set out exploring the complex mazes and the intricate pathways in search of more cheese. After some time they reached another section which was stocked with cheese but this was neither as abundant nor as fresh. Taking one bite into the rancid cheese, one of the mice returned to the first room and starved with the mouse that had stayed in the same place starving and hungry. The third mouse continued undeterred, onward and continued to survive on stale cheese, chewing his way through the maze. The third mouse not being the one to accept defeat easily went on and at the end of the maze found fresh stocks of abundant cheese. The third mouse thus remained happy, satiated and alive. Calligraphy helped him design typefaces into the Mac. According to him, you can connect dots looking into the future. 1 1 2 2 P.T.O. …………..4………… Today, I want to tell you a story from my life. The story is about connecting dots. I dropped out of Reed college after the first 6 months but then stayed around as a drop – in for another 18 months before I really quit. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions, I ever made. I could stop taking all the required classes that didn‟t interest me and begin dropping on all the ones that looked interesting. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition, turned out to be priceless later on. Here‟s one example. Reed College offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Because I had dropped out and didn‟t have to take the normal classes. I decided to take a calligraphy class. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about what makes great typography great. Ten years later, when we were designing the first Mackintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. If I had never dropped in on that course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or for that matter even proportionally spaced fonts. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very clear looking backward 10 years later. You can‟t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life. - B2 1. 2. 3. 4. Steve Jobs. Its advent caused my mother to throw a shoe through a window of the house next door and ended up with my grandfather shooting a patrolman. I am sorry, therefore, as I have said, that I ever paid any attention to the footsteps. They began about a quarter past one o‟clock, in the morning, a rhythmic, quickcadenced walking around the dining-room table. My mother was asleep in one room upstairs, my brother Herman in another, grandfather was in the attic, in the old walnut bed which, as you will remember, once fell on my father. I had just stepped out of the bathtub and was busily rubbing myself with a towel when I heard the steps. They were the steps of a man walking rapidly around the dining-table downstairs. The light from the bathroom shone down the back-steps, which dropped directly into the dining-room; I could see the faint shine of plates on the plate-rail; I couldn‟t see the table. The steps kept going round and round the table; at regular intervals a board creaked, when it was trod upon. I supposed at first that it was my father or my brother Roy, who had gone to Indianapolis but were expected home at any time. I suspected next that it was a burglar. It did not enter my mind until later that it was a ghost. After the walking had gone on for perhaps three minutes, I tiptoed to Herman‟s room. „Passt! I hissed, in the dark, shaking him. „Aww,‟ he said, in the low, hopeless tone of a despondent begle – he always half suspected that something would get him‟ in the night. I told him who I was. There‟s something downstairs!‟ I said. He got up and followed me to the head of the back staircase. We listened together. There was no sound. The steps has ceased. In fact, the one that comes from Kandhar is considered to be the best. In India, the hing from Kashmir is supposed to be the best. Some people, of course, can‟t stand its strong flavor. Hing figures prominently in quite a few dal dishes, and is used in recipes for meat, vegetables and even fish. South Indian chutneys can‟t do without hing. The famous milagai podi also known colloquially as gun powder - is a south Indian dry chutney for idlis and dosas with hing. Asafoetida originates from a plant. It is the tall Ferula Asafoetida that has fine edible leaves and stalks. The roots of the asafetida plant are thick and pulpy and also yield a similar resin as that of the stems. In fact, all parts of the plant smell. When the plants are about four or five years old, they develop very thick and fleshy, carrot shaped roots. The resin is collected from the roots. This procedure lasts for about three months from the first incision, by which time the plant has yielded up to nearly a kilo of resin and the root has dried up. Today, the most commonly available form is compounded asafetida and that‟s what we use – a fine powder containing 30 per cent asafetida resin, along with rice flour and gum Arabic. India is the world‟s largest producer of compounded asafetida. The most widespread use of kites in modern times has been for meteorological investigations. Everybody knows about how Benjamin Franklin, the great American scholar and statesman, sent a kite up in 1752 during a thunderstorm to prove that lightning was caused by electricity. He produced sparks at ground level from a key hung on the wet line as the current flowed down it. (Do not under any circumstances think of trying this yourself. A second investigator repeated Franklin‟s experiment shortly afterwards and was killed.) By sending up instruments on kites it has been possible to make readings of air-pressure, temperature, speed, direction and humidity. As a result, when the big man came on the scene it was always a quick decision one way or another. There was no scope or time for any kind of wavering or whitewashing. Long years of practice of this kind had bred in the doctor a certain truthfulness; for that very reason his opinionwas valued; he was not a mere expressing an opinion but a judge pronouncing a verdict. The patient‟s life hung on his words. This never unduly worried Dr. Raman. He never believed that agreeable words ever saved lives. He did not think it was any of his business to provide comforting lies when as a matter of course nature would tell them the truth in a few hours. However, when he glimpsed the faintest sign of hope, he rolled up his sleeve and stepped into the arena : it might be hours or days, but he never withdrew till wrested the prize from Yama‟s hands. Today standing over a bed, the doctor felt that he himself needed someone to tell him soothing lies. He mopped his brow with his kerchief and sat down in the chair besides the bed. On the bed lay his dearest friend in the world; Gopal. They had known each other for forty years now, starting with their kindergarten days. They could not, of course meet as much as they wanted, each being wrapped in his own family and profession.
