TheSecretGardenisinmytopthreefavoritemusicals(IntotheWoodsand
TheLast5Yearsbeingtheothertwo)sinceIdirecteditinthisverytheatre
fifteenyearsago.Youmightbeinterestedtoknowthatseveralofthecast,
crewandorchestrafromthe1995productionhaveenthusiasticallyjoinedus
tomountitagain!MeaghanMacDonald(Alice)wasourMaryLennoxway
backwhen.Ithinkit'ssafetosaythattheysharemyloveofthebeautiful,
hauntingmelodies,poeticlyricsandprofoundthemes.Themusicalisbasedon
the1911novelofthesamenamebyFrancesHodgsonBurnett.Itpremiered
onBroadwayin1991andranfor709performances.Ifyouareunfamiliarwith
thestory,MaryLennox,ayoungEnglishgirlbornandraisedintheBritishRaj,
isorphanedbyacholeraoutbreakwhensheis11years-old.Sheissentaway
fromIndiatoYorkshire,England,tolivewithrelativeswhoshehasnevermet.
ButMaryLennoxisnotalone.Sheissurroundedbytheghostsofherpast
(referredtointheprogramasDreamers)andherlateAuntLilywhonotten
yearsearlierleftahusbandandnewbornson.Herownpersonalityblossoms
asshe,ayounggardenerandahousemaidbringnewlifetoaneglected
garden,aswellastohersicklycousinandbereaveduncle.
Directingthisshowwasfun.Itisalwaysexcitingwatchingyoungactorscome
intotheirownweekafterweek,Iamtremendouslyproudofwhattheyhave
achieved.Icouldn'tbehappiertobecollaboratingagainwiththetalented
peoplewhohavemadeworkingontheseshowssuchapleasure.Thankyou,

thehomeofthePlayers'vastcollectionofperiodandcontemporarycostumesavailable
forrentalsfortheatricalandotherevents.NorthumberlandPlayersalsoleasesThe
ThirdSpaceonLoveshinRoadforsetstorageandconstruction.
Over10,000peopleattendedourproductionslastyear.Wehopeevenmorepeople
willseeourshows.
