I am sure we had a few parents feeling this way last week. Saying goodbye to your child for the
first time at school, moving to a new school or helping them settle into a new class, with a new
teacher, can be stressful for the parents as well as the students. I know personally I felt a little
uneasy that I could not take my youngest child to Kindy on her first day. I should not have
worried because when the classes were settled I slipped over to check on her but she was
much more interested in playing with the new toys and new friends instead of talking to her Dad.
The year, as always, has started at a hectic pace with new teachers, students and families
joining the St Brendan’s Community. The most thrilling thing though, is the look of excitement
and wonder on the students' faces at being back at school and looking forward to the year
ahead – even when they are trying not to show it.
I must take this opportunity to thank all parents who assisted with the care of the school
grounds during the break. Mick Curtis has been extremely valuable in the development of our
sporting oval which has come along very well and it is getting closer to having children running
around on it. Brian Farquhar has generously assisted with slashing the longer grass. We also
had Paul Uhr and members of the Service Committee assisting with watering and participating
in a working bee during the holidays. I am sure you agree the school grounds look wonderful.

FINDING GOD IN ALL THINGS
Pope Francis has declared an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. This
Holy Year of Mercy began December 8, 2015. This year’s motto is
“Merciful Like the Father.” Sometimes, when we think of the
word mercy , we picture someone throwing themselves on their
knees before a cruel villain, pleading to be spared some
punishment. This is not our understanding of God’s mercy. We do
not ask for God’s mercy because we are afraid of incurring his wrath
as punishment for our sins. Rather, when we call on God to have
mercy, we are calling on God in the only way we know him - as one
who responds with compassion to those in need. When we show
mercy to others, we are responding as God responds, with compassion. Mercy is a
virtue that influence's our compassion for others. Mercy inspires our will to ease the
misfortunes and suffering of others.
However, works of mercy are more than gestures or obligations, the actions must be
performed as acts of love for our neighbour as a response to our deep love for God.

LENT IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER
Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) is the day before Ash Wednesday, the
beginning of Lent in the Roman Catholic Church. "Shrove" is the past tense of the
word "shrive," which means to hear a confession, assign penance, and absolve from
sin. Shrove Tuesday is a reminder that we are entering a season of
forgiveness.During the Middle Ages, Christians made savoury pancakes as a way to
use up foods like eggs, meat and cheese, as they abstained from eating these foods
during Lent. Hence the tradition of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday began.
On Tuesday 9th February, at lunch time, pancakes will be on sale. You
can send $1.00 to school with your child and they will receive 2 pancakes with,
or without, jam. The pancakes are being donated by the teachers, and all
proceeds will go to CARITAS, our major mission fundraiser for Term 1.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of
penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter
Sunday. Early Christians did public penance and wore sackcloth and ashes. On Ash
Wednesday, we mark our foreheads with ashes as a symbol of penance and to help
us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. All classes will attend a liturgy in
the church at 9am on Wednesday 10th Feb. Parents and friends are
welcome to attend.

ARM BANDS - on the first day of school, students received an
armband with our 4 school pillars (virtues)
Respect, Responsibility, Excellence, Service.
We encourage these to be worn as a regular part of your child's uniform. If your child
loses theirs a replacement can be purchased from the office.
MJR - at Saint Brendan's, we are guided by the person and teachings
of Jesus Christ, in all we say and do. The MJR (Making Jesus Real)
Program is used at our school to bring our faith into our everyday
actions and interactions with others. Our whole school focus for this
fortnight is: Welcoming. Welcoming others is an important part of our school life.
Help us out, by approaching a new student or family and make them feel welcome :)

Welcome to 2016. I hope all families had fun reading with their children over the summer
break. Scholastic Book Fair catalogues have gone home in the last few days. We really
appreciate your help in supporting book club which in turn provides resources for the
classrooms and the library. Orders for this issue of book club are due by Monday 8 th of
February. For families new to our school we are unable to accept cash payments for book
club items. Payment needs to be made by credit card via the phone or internet or by
cheque payable to Scholastic Australia. Please come and see me if you are having
problems with the book club ordering system.
