Instrumental Music Program 2017 For many students, a musical journey begun at Upwey High School has developed into a lifelong passion. Playing a musical instrument is a unique and enriching experience. Music provides students with an outlet to explore, share and express themselves in a creative and supportive environment. Students learn valuable team skills as they play in a collaborative musical ensemble and build confidence through performances. As well as being a lot of fun, music improves memory, coordination, organisation and concentration, all of which will help to create pathways for future learning. At Upwey High School we offer students the opportunity to join the instrumental music program. By joining the program students participate in weekly lessons on their chosen instrument, ensemble rehearsals and many performance opportunities. Tuition fees outlined within the 2017 enrolment form are levied to assist with tuition costs not covered by the Department of Education and Training. This fee is due by the dates outlined within the 2017 enrolment form and is non-refundable. 2. As with all other subjects the student’s work will be subject to reporting and assessment each semester. 3. Every student is required to be a member of at least one ensemble as directed. Students are expected to attend weekly rehearsals (held before or after normal school hours, or at lunchtime) and play in all performances. 4. Each student must undertake a regular and consistent practice program. The Music Department asks for full parental support for the practice schedule as recommended by the teacher. 5. Weekly lessons, normally in small groups, are given during school hours. Students are withdrawn from class at a time that rotates throughout the school day to avoid missing the same class each week. 6. Timetables are subject to change and whilst every effort is made to provide plenty of notice, it is the student’s responsibility to check their lesson times each week. 7. Students are enrolled into a whole-school music program which is enriching and exceptional value due to part subsidy from the Department of Education and Training. As many instrumental music teachers are committed to several schools, they cannot be expected to make up lessons missed due to illness, public holidays and other school events. 8. Students are expected to purchase their own sundries, such as reeds, strings, tuition books, drum sticks/percussion mallets. (All ensemble music is supplied by the school.) 9. Parents and students must sign the authorisation and undertaking statements on the 2017 enrolment form to be enrolled in the program. 10.
