Drippy Dropperson Calendar Contest Celebrate National Safe Drinking Water Week May 3-9, 2015 The City of Roswell is challenging Roswell’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to draw pictures of Drippy Dropperson experiencing the drinking water treatment process! The best drawing for each step will be featured in the 2015-2016 Drippy Dropperson Calendar. The winning artists, their families, and their teachers will be invited to a winners’ recognition during a Mayor and Council meeting! THE DRINKING WATER PROCESS: 1. Raw Water – Roswell’s drinking water comes from Big Creek, a tributary of the Chattahoochee River. 2. Pump Station – The water is pumped out of the creek and sent to a drinking water treatment plant. 3. Coagulation – A chemical called alum is added, which attracts the dirt in the water. 4. Flocculation – The dirt and the alum clump together in particles called “floc”. 5. Sedimentation – The heavy “floc” sinks to the bottom of the tank and is removed from the water. 6. Filtration – The water passes through a filter with layers of sand, gravel, and charcoal to remove remaining particles. 7. Disinfection – A small amount of chlorine is added to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. 8. Fluoridation – Adding fluoride to our drinking water prevents tooth decay. 9. Corrosion Control - A chemical is added to the water to keep the pipes in your home from rusting. 10. Storage – The clean water is sent to a water tower for storage until it is ready to be used. 11. Distribution – The water travels to your home or school through a system of underground pipes. 12. Use – It arrives ready for you to use for drinking, washing, and cooking! What other ways do you use water? RULES: 1. All entries must be done by a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader enrolled in a public, private, or home school in Roswell. 2.
