back? What did Drake look like? Think about
how you will display this work.
Task 2). Mapping the world
Task 2) Great discoveries
The Tudors were the first people to try and
map the world.
The Tudor period was packed full of discoveries
that were bought back to England e.g . Chocolate
was bought from Mexico to Spain in 1520.
Can you draw a map of Sir Francis Drake
famous voyage around the world and label
it? What can you find out about his voyage?
Your task is to find, and then write about, the
different Tudor discoveries (including chocolate,
tobacco, apricots, potatoes and coffee.) What
else was discovered? Who discovered each
item? When was it discovered?
Can you put the dates that each item was
discovered on a timeline (stretching form 1485
to 1603)?
You can illustrate your work if you wish.
Task 3) Galleon!
Task 3) Life on a Tudor ship
The task is to create a model of a Galleon.
Galleons were very large ocean going ships,
four times as long as they were wide. They
had a special deck for cannons. They were
broad, slow and not very manoeuvrable. You
will find useful pictures and information on
the internet using Google.
Using paper, card, string, sellotape, glue
etc… can you construct a rigged Tudor
Galleon?

on board a ship. Write (and include pictures
if you wish) about how tudor sailors slept,
what they ate, the discipline, what their

sea. Words that you could include: scurvy,
punishment, sails, compass, fresh fruit,
flogged, navigate, meat, weevils, beer.
Task 4) Francis Drake portrait!
Task 4) Biscuits!
Francis drake was a famous Tudor explorer.
Can you draw a picture of Sir Francis Drake?
First, find out some facts about his life. Then,
try and capture his character in your picture.
Label your picture with some facts you have
found out about him.
Tudor sailors spent many days out of sight of
land. They had to take food with them that
would last. They preserved food by drying,
salting, smoking and pickling. They took food
which kept naturally, like nuts.
You can also draw a portrait of Queen
Elizabeth I who commissioned Sir Francis
Drake to sail around the world.
They took biscuits on long journeys because
they lasted better than bread. Can you make
some Tudor biscuits? Jumbles (Knotted Biscuits)
are a type of Tudor biscuit. You will find other
useful information on different recipes on the
internet using Google. Write up the recipe you
use. Photograph the process of you making the
biscuits and finally, write up a taste testing
summary of the texture and the taste of the
biscuits.
I hope that you all find the activities fun!
As each task requires you to read, it is better if you read more than one text for each task.
