2013 Weingut am Nil Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling trocken
Drink: 2015–2028
“The 2013 Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling trocken is an impressive newcomer on the list of the
most finest, terroir-driven wines from the Pfalz. Smoky, herbal, and chalky citrus flavors on the
deep and complex nose are followed by a pure, straight, and citric, really long and persistent
taste that is clearly driven by the terroir rather than the variety. I noticed the slightly creamy
texture and a really little hint of new oak only the third day when I tasted this top wine for the
second time. The salty finish is firm, piquant, long and very mineral whereas the fruit aromas
quote ripe apricots and white peaches. For many years it was Koehler-Ruprecht who was the
synonym for the Saumagen vineyard. Now here is the contender!”

2013 Weingut am Nil Ungsteiner Herrenberg Riesling trocken
Drink: 2017–2025
“The 2013 Ungsteiner Herrenberg Riesling trocken offers pure citric and dusty/mineral flavors
of lemon grass and chalk as well as density and a remarkable deepness and purity on the nose.
This full-bodied wine from the 20% steep, southeast site is a brilliant and racy Riesling from
limestone and Rotliegend soils which initially seems less exuberant than the Ungsteiner village
and the Gutswein Riesling trocken, but indeed it develops an impressive complexity, thrill and
salty length. This is an excellent dry Riesling with a perceptible and promising finish.”

2013 Weingut am Nil Ungsteiner Riesling trocken
Drink: 2014–2022
“The 2013 Ungsteiner Riesling trocken was sourced from two crus, Herrenberg and
Weilberg in mid of October. Fermented in stainless steel, the Ungstein village wine offers
precise and fresh aromas of white peaches, limes and apples mixed with hints of iron and
citric herbs. On the palate this is a full-bodied, fruit intense, fresh, straight and quite powerful wine with a piquant acidity and a lingering minerality. With 13.5 vol-% alcohol and
a residual sugar of 5 grams, it is slightly saturating in the beginning, but comes together
with aeration.”

“I tasted the 2013 Riesling trocken after I tasted several Pinot Noirs from the Loire and the Pfalz.
A good Qualitätswein has to stand this, we say in Germany, it has to ‚repair‘ the palate, has to
make it ready for the next flights or the après. Indeed there are not too many whites that stand
strong, proud and un-fractured after the more powerful and tannic forerunners. This one, however, does a good job. It is crisp, piquant, and fruit intense, displaying white peach, citrus and
smoke flavors on the nose whereas on the palate it is racy and fruity enough not only to sweep
away the tannins and fruit intensity of the powerful reds you might have had before but to claim
its own genuine features. It is surely the racy piquancy and the clear fruit expression that makes
this quality wine a best buy even to those of you who prefer to start a wine journey with whites.”
