Your right
wrist controls your
adrenaline level.
It’s decision time. But of course, there’s only one choice: twist the throttle and let the 167 bhp (123 kW)
of the BMW K 1200 S’s 4-cylinder engine catapult you ahead of the rest. Developing 130 Nm of torque,
and taking you from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 2.8 seconds, the only question is whether you can
handle the adrenaline rush.
004
005
Know where
you’re going.
Then go further.
A blur moving across the tarmac. Now you see it, now you don’t.
With its 6-speed transmission, the BMW K 1200 S hits the spot
every time, effortlessly translating power into precision, thanks to
its close gear ratios.
006
007
How far do you want to go? With the BMW K 1200 S, there really is no limit.
Its sport chassis features the patented BMW Motorrad Duolever at the front
and the BMW Motorrad Paralever at the rear, and thanks to the unique
Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA)*, it’s highly adaptable, as adjustments to both front and rear suspension damping can be made while the
bike is in motion. And when at a standstill the spring preload can be set with
the engine running. Road surfaces and conditions change constantly; here is
a BMW motorcycle that can adapt just as quickly.

The only thing that matches the output of the BMW K 1200 S engine is the precise, direct, effective stopping power of
its braking system. BMW Motorrad Integral ABS* ensures that this tremendous deceleration can be safely controlled
even in critical situations. And of course, shorter braking distances mean you can keep the throttle open for longer.
* In the UK, the K 1200 S can be supplied without ABS.

Fast forward in
Coolidge, Arizona.
Where’s that, you may well ask? Granted, this sleepy town in
Pinal County, just off Highway 87 between Phoenix and Tucson,
is somewhat off the beaten track. But every two weeks, its
7,000 inhabitants welcome visitors from the skies as a wave of
12-cylinder propeller planes thunders in across the sierra heading
for the fly-in breakfast at Coolidge airfield.
The winding roads that snake through this barren, remote landscape
receive their fair share of visitors, too – most of them travelling into
the Valley of Fire, beneath the towering ridges of the Superstition
Mountains. Also worth seeing is the four-storey-high Casa Grande
Ruins National Monument, built hundreds of years ago by Hohokam
Indians and still an imposing sight as it rises unexpectedly out of the
desert.

Power
Feel the power.
The 4-cylinder engine.
Thanks to its in-line 4-cylinder engine, the BMW K 1200 S is the
most powerful motorcycle BMW Motorrad has ever built. Not only
does it deliver remarkable performance, its low centre of gravity is
key in delivering the sort of outstanding handling you would expect
from a BMW sportsbike.
The perfect blend of acceleration and performance.
Optimized airflow through the intake and exhaust ports and a
straight manifold help the BMW K 1200 S extend the frontiers
of motorcycle performance. Its 167 brake horsepower (123 kW)
catapult it from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 2.8 seconds, and
130 Nm of torque ensures instant engine response right across
the rev range.
Lateral thinking, lateral mounting.
The BMW K 1200 S is the first BMW Motorrad motorcycle to
feature a laterally mounted 4-cylinder engine. And by angling the
cylinder bank forwards by 55 degrees, our designers have achieved
a lower centre of gravity, while the narrowness of the liquid-cooled
engine makes the bike more ergonomic, so you can lean harder into
corners. A radical rethink of where to site components such as the
water pump helps reduce the size and weight of the engine and
eliminates unnecessary cables and hoses.
Derived from the BMW Formula One
engine, the 16 valves are operated by
rocker arms, minimizing friction and
increasing durability at high revs.
The 6-speed gearbox of the BMW K 1200 S
converts the power of the 4-cylinder engine
into outstanding acceleration.
The joy of six.
Close gear ratios and a precise shifting mechanism are essential
on any sportsbike, and that’s just what the 6-speed manual transmission on the BMW K 1200 S delivers. The close ratios allow
riders to convert the power of the 4-cylinder engine into truly jawdropping acceleration, and the shifting mechanism is exceptionally
smooth. The whole drive train has been designed with one
thing in mind: ultimate performance.
Formula One on two wheels.
The cylinder head technology on the BMW K 1200 S is directly
derived from that used in Formula One. The engine’s 16 valves
are operated by rocker arms, minimizing friction and increasing
durability at high revs. The large valve lift, low weight of the moving
parts and the rigidity of the valve train all reduce the stresses
on individual components, resulting in impressive fuel economy,
smooth torque delivery, and of course, the legendary reliability
you expect from BMW Motorrad.
Its 4-cylinder engine makes the
BMW K 1200 S the most powerful
motorcycle BMW has ever built,
delivering 167 bhp (123 kW) of
power and 130 Nm of torque.
Cleaner combustion for a cleaner environment.
The engine of the BMW K 1200 S sets new standards in terms of
environmental friendliness. State-of-the-art combustion chamber
design ensures that the fuel/air mixture burns more efficiently and
reduces fuel consumption. And thanks to a secondary air system
and a regulated 3-way catalytic converter, the quality of its emissions
comfortably exceeds the strict EU3 environmental standard.

The sophisticated geometry
improves damping and reduces
brake dive. The separation of
damping and suspension functions markedly improves handling.
Handling
Making light work of being the best.
The specially developed sports chassis is another area where the
BMW K 1200 S sets new standards. Combining agility with practicality in everyday use, it delivers thrilling handling, unrivalled control and
outstanding safety, and takes riding pleasure to new levels.
Reinventing the wheel. The BMW Motorrad Duolever.
The BMW K 1200 S features the patented BMW Motorrad Duolever
front suspension system. The revolutionary aspect of the Duolever is
the way it accommodates two apparently contradictory demands. It
makes a long wheelbase possible, for smoother high speed cruising
– but without compromising on agility and cornering performance. Its
double trailing arm construction separates the suspension and wheel
control functions. This results in a reduction in unwanted brake dive,
while allowing the forks to be built with a higher torsional resistance.
The benefits for the rider are improved steering response, more agile
handling and a high degree of stability under braking.
The BMW Motorrad Paralever is both a
suspension unit and part of the drive train.
For better ground clearance, the Paralever
brace is located over the swinging arm.
The BMW Motorrad Duolever
delivers agile handling, precise
steering response and a high
degree of stability under braking.
The Duolever is mounted low on the frame to ensure a low centre of
gravity and optimum balance. This also makes room for a larger airbox,
enhancing engine performance even further by increasing air inflow.
Lighter, slimmer, more responsive. The Paralever.
With the latest generation of its Paralever rear suspension system,
BMW Motorrad has found the perfect complement to the Duolever
front suspension. But the Paralever is much more than a suspension
system: it also transfers drive to the rear wheel and compensates for
the load change in the shaft drive. The Paralever brace is sited above
the drive shaft, for better ground clearance, and the improved damping
of its progressive transmission kinematics makes it the most efficient
version yet. Its low weight reduces unsprung mass, and its compact
dimensions are essential to the bike’s slender profile.
An unbeatable combination of unique components.
The Duolever and Paralever work together perfectly to deliver active
safety and authentic sportsbike handling.
The cylinder bank of the laterally mounted
engine is angled forward by 55 degrees
for a lower centre of gravity.
Incorporated into the swinging arm, the BMW Motorrad shaft
drive is an extremely durable, low-maintenance solution that
delivers a consistent level of performance.

Innovation
Taming the elements.
The screen.
In combination with the full fairing, the compact screen of the
BMW K 1200 S offers class-leading protection from the elements.
The clever design of the leading edge routes the air flow around the
rider, allowing comfortable riding even at high speeds. The modular
construction of the fairing makes servicing easy, while the front mudguard has been tested in wind tunnels to ensure optimum airflow
to the radiator, and as a result air inlets in the fairing are not required.

it comes to slowing down.
Let’s get physical:
the sports shaft drive.
The BMW Motorrad braking system on the BMW K 1200 S
has been specially adapted to the demands of a sportsbike. Its
defining characteristics are low weight, durability and outstanding
performance.
The BMW Motorrad Paralever, with its raised torque reactor strut,
is notable for its lightweight construction and sporting design.
A lower unsprung mass results in less weight, making the rear suspension extremely sensitive and responsive.
The stopping power is produced by two 320-mm-diameter disc
brakes. The BMW K 1200 S is fitted as standard with the partially
integral version of the new-generation BMW Motorrad Integral ABS*
system, which weighs just 2.2 kilograms. This optimises the distribution of braking force to front and rear wheels when the handlebar lever
is pulled. The foot brake, on the other hand, acts only on the rear wheel.
The system prevents rear-wheel lift, ensuring both wheels stay in
contact with the ground. It also offers riders precise control over braking, and ensures the braking force is appropriate for the current load.
No more maintenance is required than on motorcycles without ABS.
Incorporated into the Paralever, the lightweight BMW Motorrad shaft
drive is the key to the responsiveness and smooth power delivery of
the BMW K 1200 S. It is extremely durable, and requires very little
maintenance.

spring preload for rider.
Up until now, different surfaces, varying loads and individual riding
styles all made manual suspension adjustment a tricky business.
Achieving optimum balance in the preloading of springs and suspension requires a great deal of experience and judgment. The
BMW K 1200 S is the first motorcycle in the world to do away
with manual suspension tuning, thanks to the innovative Electronic
Suspension Adjustment (ESA) system*. The settings selected are
displayed on the Info Flatscreen.
Load settings.
When stationary and with the engine running, the rider can adjust
suspension preload to the level of load (rider only, rider with luggage or rider with passenger and luggage) at the touch of a button.
Riding style settings.
ESA makes it possible for riders to adjust the chassis while riding,
to suit their own personal riding style and road conditions. At the
touch of a button, riders are able to choose between three settings
(Normal, Comfort and Sport) for front and rear suspension. The
damper settings – rebound at the front, rebound and compression
at the rear – are then adjusted automatically.
Perfect road holding, all the time.
With its easy operation and optimised chassis tuning, ESA makes
a significant contribution to rider safety and comfort. It is exclusive
to BMW Motorrad.

021
Rider step length
The latest thinking in ergonomics has been
applied to the BMW K 1200 S.
The design takes into account both step length (A)
and seat height (B),
for maximum comfort and control.
Ergonomics
Are you sitting comfortably? Then let us begin.
022
The designers of the BMW K 1200 S have understood that riders
come in all shapes and sizes. That is why they decided to offer a
choice of two seat heights – an 820-mm standard version (with a
rider step length of 1,810 mm) and an optional 790-mm low version
(with a rider step length of 1,750 mm).
Every rider knows that the wider the seat, especially towards the
front, the harder it is to reach the ³oor with your feet – whatever the
seat height. The seat of the BMW K 1200 S has been optimised in
terms of step length, so it is markedly slimmer towards the front,
giving more freedom of movement for sports-style riding, while
broader at the rear, for more comfort.
The seating position of the BMW K 1200 S suits large and small
riders alike. The ergonomic triangle formed by the footrest, seat and
handlebar is designed to ensure maximum comfort, even when adopting a sports riding stance. The slim lines of the BMW K 1200 S also
allow for an especially narrow knee posture, improving rider control
and contact with the bike. The superior ergonomics of the BMW
K 1200 S are just another example of how it is pushing back the
boundaries of sports riding.
