Nearly 500 years ago, the Protestant Reformation
began, largely as a backlash against corrupt practices
in the Church. Among the “reforms” that took place
between 1517 and 1562 was the destruction of
priceless works of art: paintings, portraits, frescoes,
and icons. Did we throw out the baby with the
bathwater? But what of the second Commandment?

Violet Behzadian is an Iranian refugee who arrived in
Ladner in 2013 with her family, sponsored by the
Ladner CRC. She became a Christian in 2006. She
taught art and architecture at the Universities of
Tehran and Zanjan from 2003 to 2009, but was fired
from her position for refusing to denounce Jesus.
Creating art has always been important to Violet, and
even more so now as an expression of her devotion to
God, and thankfulness for her salvation. Violet has
created 18 large canvasses beautifully interpreting the
theme of salvation in Christ. These paintings will be
displayed at her one-woman show at the Lookout
Gallery, Regent College February 22 – March 23rd. We
will be able to view some of her work and listen to her
speak of her journey and her art.

looking for? What is art appreciation anyway? What is
good art? Why do some pieces of art move us so
deeply? Can art be a tool to deepen our faith?
