Laryngeal Massage
Rationale:
To stretch muscles and tissue, promote circulation in the laryngeal area, relax tense muscles, and relieve
discomfort associated with excess tension. Laryngeal massage should result in reduction in height and stiffness
of the larynx, as well as increased mobility and awareness of muscular tension. Once the larynx is “released” and
range of motion is normalized, an improvement in vocal effort, quality, and dynamic range should follow.
Procedure:
~ Encircle the hyoid bone with the thumb and index finger, starting in the frontmiddle, and working your way
back. Once you’ve reached the back part of the hyoid bone, apply pressure in a circular motion. Now repeat while
humming.
.
.
- Now, repeat this procedure in the thyroid space; begin just above the thyroid notch (adams apple), and work
your way back. Now repeat while humming.
~ Now, with the thumb arid index finger, move the thyroid cartilage side to side. Don’t be alarmed if you feel or
hear popping
Throughout the massage, move your thumb and forefinger in a circular motion, applying a comfortable amount of
pressure in a downward motion. Give the most attention to spots that are tender or feel most tense. Assume a
relaxed body position throughout the massage (relaxed shoulders, unhinged jaw).
Complete massage 1 time per day for 3-5 minutes. Massage more frequently or for longer if needed.
