In order to continue with your application for Jazz Performance – Introduction to
Commercial Jazz – Trombone, you must complete this step in the application process.
Applicant selection is based on academic criteria and results of these secondary
requirements. The information below contains all information to prepare and submit
secondary requirements for consideration.
Applicants must meet both academic and secondary requirements in order to meet
minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility does not guarantee an offer of
admission. Please refer to the program page at www.humber.ca to verify this program’s

Secondary Requirements
Applicants are required to submit an online audition. Applicants must book and pay a $50
fee for their audition as soon as possible, audition times fill up very quickly and space is
limited. Please see “Registration Instructions” below to complete your online audition.
i. Online Audition
All applicants are required to upload an audition video that clearly demonstrates their
current performance level on their major instrument. Audition requirements are detailed
below. While auditions are assessed on a balance of the technical and song material
presented, overall musicality and general ability are also considered as important elements
in the selection process.

The recording must be video with audio (audio-only recordings will not be
accepted);
The overall sound on the recording should be at a reasonably good quality level and
your instrument must be clearly heard throughout the recording;
You must be clearly visible on the recording at all times;
No editing of the recording is allowed, all material should be recorded in one
session;
Open the recording with a very short statement on your reasons for wanting to
study at Humber and your musical background (roughly 1 minute);

The entire audition video should not exceed 20 minutes.
Video Recording should contain the following:
Scales:
One or two octaves (two octaves recommended)
ascending and descending, playing 1/8th notes.
Recommended M.M. Quarter note =100: Ab major (Bb
for trumpets) played staccato, E major (F# for trpts.)
played legato. D harmonic minor (E for trpts.) any
style of articulation. F melodic minor (G for trpts.) any
style of articulation.
Chords:
One or two octaves arpeggiated ascending and
descending: Bb dominant 7 (C for trpts.),Gb major 7
(Ab for trpts.), C minor 7(b5) (D for trpts.), Eb
diminished 7 (F for trpts.). Recommended M.M.
Quarter note = 100
Range:
A high (or low for bass trombonists) range exercise:
Perform a favourite range exercise (scales,chords, or
harmonics) that shows off your high (or low) range
potential.
Classical Selection:
Two Jazz Standards:
Your own choice:
(2 to 4 minutes recommended): A lyrical or technical
study, etude, or an excerpt of a concerto. No
accompaniment required.
Play the melody and one or more choruses of an
improvised solo, 2 to 5 minutes for each tune.
Suggested repertoire includes medium or up tempo
tunes such as Stella By Starlight, Yardbird Suite, Just
Friends, Green Dolphin St., Joy Spring, Sonnymoon For
Two, I’m Old Fashioned, and slower ballads such as
Body and Soul, Summertime, Georgia, Laura, In A
Sentimental Mood.
This selection could be a latin or brazilian tune,
another jazz standard, a composition, or anything that
shows off your musical interests.
The three tunes above can have a live rhythm section (or just piano or guitar)
accompaniment, or use playalong CD’s such as the Jamey Aebersold CD/Book series. For
those who have little jazz improvising experience, do your best, we not only listen to your
sound, time, technique, but also your overall potential.
Registration Instructions
Applicants must Log-in to MyHumber and pay a $50 fee for their audition in Humber’s
Events Management system. Once in Events Management, you will receive additional
instructions for submission of your audition video through SlideRoom. Video can be
up to 250MB.
1. Log-in to MyHumber
2. Select the Applicant tab
3. Select your Year and Applicant Number from the drop-down menu, then click
Submit
4. Click on Missing Requirements
5. Click on “Go to Events” (located under the “Link” section, near the bottom right of
the page)
6. Choose from a list of available assessments and follow the prompts
All secondary requirements will be evaluated and a score will be calculated by the
academic school.
Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission
decisions will not be released by phone.
