Día de los Muertos at Muir
Brought to you by PTA
Día de los Muertos Event
Brought to you by
FLAG
On October 27 there was an all school
Día de los Muertos assembly in
English and Spanish presented by La
Catrina, Jeannette Garcia, and
sponsored by PTA, and on November
1st the FLAG hosted their annual Día
de los Muertos event.
Día de los Muertos is a tradition
celebrated in many Latin American
countries and now in the United
States. It is a day of celebration to
honor those that have passed. It is a
day of remembrance and festive
celebrations.
Muir students had an array of fun
and culturally educational
experiences listening to poetry
from la catrina, making papel
picado, mask decorating or face
painting!
Thank you to Juana Medina for her
leadership in organizing Día de los
Muertos at Muir.

Principal’s Message
Dear John Muir Families,
It is hard to believe that we just completed
our first trimester for the 2016-2017 school
year. On November 10th all 1st- 6th grade
students will receive their first report card
for this academic year. Transitional
Kindergarten and Kindergarten students will
have parent conferences to discuss the
progress of the students.
I encourage you to take some time and have
a dialogue with your child and set goals for
the next trimester. Our teachers have been
working diligently to help students set goals
for themselves and to grow academically.
The State Standards are cognitively rigorous
and it requires students to think differently
and at a deeper level. Teachers have met
with individual students to set goals for the
year. You can also discuss your child’s goals
with him/her as well as with the teacher.
Please see pictures of teachers (Mrs.
Petrossians, Mr. Dermegerdichian and Miss
Vardani) as they met with students during
goal setting conferences).
The following are some ideas for parents
and how they can support at home:
•Emphasizing critical thinking where
students analyze, discuss and justify their
thinking.
•Encouraging problem solving rather than
giving the answers.
•Encouraging students to read non-fiction
books
Ms. Petrossians
2nd Grade Teacher
The report card is a communication tool
reflecting your child’s performance at
school.
If your child has 1s on his or her report card,
I highly recommend for you to contact your
child’s teacher and set up a conference to
discuss your child’s academic needs.
Lastly, the results of our School Site Council
elections are in and our John Muir School
Site Council parents are:
Adrina Hydikian
Michelle Manalo
Arsen Samvelian
Juana Medina
Guillermina Gutierrez
I thank you for your involvement in your
child’s academics and for your support.
