Introduction
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Front Line Demonstration is a proven extension mechanism with the objectives of
demonstrating the usefulness of the latest improved crop production and protection technologies
to the farmers as well as extension workers with a view to reduce the time gap between
technology generation and its adoption. It also enables the scientists to obtain direct feedback
from cotton farmers and suitably reorient their research programs, develop appropriate
technology packages and to create effective linkage among scientists, extension personnel and
farmers. This novel programme was implemented in 1996-97 for cotton crop to demonstrate
cotton production technologies through the net working centres of All India Coordinated
Research Project (AICRP) on Cotton. Since thenAICRP on cotton has been conducting FLD on
cotton through its network centers and by the Central Institute for Cotton Research, Nagpur and
its regional stations in Coimbatore and Sirsa. Until 2013, these demonstrations were conducted
on Production Technology, Integrated Pest Management and on Farm implements under
Technology Mission on Cotton, Mini Mission II. During the year 2016-17, under national Food
Security Mission on Cotton (NFSM) – Commercial Crops, the FLDs were conducted with the
following objectives.
Objectives

To demonstrate the usefulness of the latest improved crop production and protection
technologies to the farmers as well as extension workers with a view to reduce the time
gap between technology generation and its adoption.

To enable scientists to obtain direct feedback from cotton farmers and suitably reorient
their research programmes and develop appropriate technology packages.

To create effective linkage among scientists, extension personnel and farmers.
Implementing Agencies and Fund Flow Mechanism
In 12th Five Year Plan under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM), cropping
system approach is being adopted by including commercial crops like cotton to meet the demand
5 FLD Annual Report 2016-17
of both food and cash crops. In general, cotton is cultivated under different cropping system i.e.,
mono-cropping, mixed cropping, relay cropping, intercropping and rotation or sequence
cropping in India (Table 1). The common traditional practice adopted in cultivation of cotton in
central and south India is strip cropping i.e., one or two rows of pigeon pea, three to five rows of
finger millet after every eight to ten rows of cotton. Hence to increase the production of cotton
without affecting the production of food crops, FLDs were planned to conduct in three different
ways viz., FLDs on Integrated Crop Management on Cotton (ICM), FLDs on Desi cotton, Extra
Long Staple (ELS) cotton and seed production of ELS and FLDs on intercropping in cotton.

* JNKV, Khandwa could not conducted FLD this year
** Conducted under Summer Irrigated Condition
Main emphasis was given to the demonstrations for enhancing the production of cotton in
low productivity areas / problematic areas. A baseline survey was conducted by the participating
centres to know the resource endowments of the farmers and the level of cotton productivity.
For selecting the beneficiaries and identifying the priority areas, Panchayati Raj Institutions were
actively utilized. A list of beneficiaries and their plot numbers were notified in the local Block
Development / Panchayat Office. Farmers were selected in consultation with local Agricultural
8 FLD Annual Report 2016-17
Officers and Panchayat Samiti. These officials formed part of the FLD team. Bench mark survey
was conducted before taking up the demonstration which included information on the crops and
cropping system of the area, inter cropping, the average yields of cotton and the local
practicesadopted in terms of irrigation, use of fertilizer, plant protection, etc., Information on the
cost of cultivation was also collected for the area as a whole. An impact analysis after the harvest
was carried out in the light of reduction in insecticide use, reduction in cost of cultivation,
awareness of modern technology etc., Further in accordance with the decision of Government of
India (GOI) regarding implementation of Special Component Plan (SCP) for Scheduled Caste
and Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) for Scheduled Tribes and Gender Budgeting, the beneficiaries were
selected for the year’s front line demonstration programme.
FLDs on Integrated Crop Management on Cotton
Under FLDs on ICM on cotton, a total of 275 demonstrations were conducted during the
year 2016-17. Each demonstration was conducted in one hectare plot. High yielding varieties and
hybrids suited for various agro-climatic conditions, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM),
Integrated Pest Management (IPM), use of bio-fertilizers, bio-pesticides, water management etc.,
were the production technologies demonstrated through this component. An amount of Rs.7000/
was allocated per hectare of demonstration. Out of this, Rs.6000/- was used for essential inputs
for demonstration and the remaining Rs.1000/- was earmarked as contingencies for field day,
publicity material, POL, visit of Scientists etc., The critical inputs for FLD included the cost of
seed (non-Bt), bio-fertilizer, micronutrients, bio-pesticides, seeds of intercrops, pheromone
traps/light traps etc.,
FLDs on Desi / ELS cotton / seed production of Desi / ELS cotton
In order to popularize the cultivation of desi / ELS cotton and produce the seeds of Desi /
ELS cotton, this component was implemented in 225 hectares. An amount of Rs.8000/ was
allocated per hectare of demonstration. Out of this, Rs.7000/- was used for essential inputs for
demonstration and the remaining Rs.1000/- was earmarked as contingencies for field day,

17 FLD Annual Report 2016-17
Highlights of FLDs Conducted by the Centres during the Year 2016-17
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
North Zone
Punjab Agricultural University, Faridkot
Climate and its Effects on Cotton Crop
The weather during the report period was initially dry and mostly humid during monsoon
period. Light to medium rainfall in isolated patches throughout the cotton growing area during
sowing period resulted in crust formation and hence forced some of the farmers to re-sow or
plough the cotton fields. During 2016, a total of 385.8 mm rainfall was received in 18 rainy days
at Regional Research Station, Faridkot. The maximum rainfall of 282.6 mm was recorded
during crucial flowering and fruiting period i.e., July to September. The highest rainfall occurred
during month of August followed by July and June.
Scenario of Insect Pests and Diseases
Whitefly remained a threat to cotton in Punjab resulting in some economic losses to
cotton crop in Fazilka district where rainfall was less. However the incidence of CLCuD was
medium to high. The current season also witnessed heavy incidence of thrips in some cotton
growing areas of the state. In context to bollworms, there was no serious incidence of the
complex as more than 90 percent area was under Bt cotton (BGII).
Front Line Demonstrations on ICM in Cotton
During the year 2016-17, the centre had conducted twenty demonstrations on cotton ICM
in 50 farmers’ fields. The technologies demonstrated under ICM were time of sowing, optimal
plant population, balanced nutrition, weed management and High Density Planting System. The
cotton variety demonstrated was G. hirsutumvarietyF 2228. This variety performed well and
gave an average seed cotton yield of 2095.2 kg/haas against the farmers’ practice of 1884 kg/ha.
Under FLD on ICM, the average B:C ratio remained higher (1.52) than farmers’ practices (1.25).
The demonstrations were super imposed with the agronomic practices i.e., optimum plant
population, balanced nutrition, weed control and time of sowing.
Front Line Demonstrations on Desi / ELS/ Seed production of ELS cotton
A total of twenty demonstrations were conducted with fivedesi varieties (FMDH9,
FDK124,LD949, LD694 and LD327). In these demonstrations,an average seed cotton yield of
2201 kg/ha was recorded against the farmers’ practice of 2000 kg/ha. An average increase of 10
18 FLD Annual Report 2016-17
per cent higher seed cotton yield was recorded in demonstration plots and the average B: C ratio
remained higher (1.88) than farmers’ practices (1.53) as an indicative of better net returns.

Since the FLDs were conducted in Jambusar and Amod Talukas of the Bharuch district, the
meteorological data of Regional Cotton Research Station, Bharuch was considered. The
monsoon commenced with 11.6 mm rainfall during 3rd week of June-2016. An effective rainfall
of 38 mm and 80.8 mm was received during 27th and 29th SMW respectively. Sowing of most of
the FLDs was almost completed by 3rd week of July. Germination was good even though plant
population was maintained by gap filling. During the season total 480.7 mm rainfall was
received in 53 days which was more or less equal to previous year i.e., 444.8 mm in 29 days. The
rainfall of current year was nearly half than the season of 2014-15 i.e., 849.7 mm in 37 days and
21 FLD Annual Report 2016-17
one third compared to the season of 2013-14 i.e., 1465 mm in 67 days. But distribution of current
season rainfall was good i.e., 480.7 mm in 53 days during 3rd week of June to 1st week of
October offered favorable condition for rainfed cultivation.
Scenario of Insect pests and diseases
In vegetative stage of cotton crop, amongst sucking pests, thrips was found above ETL
during 2nd fortnight of August to 1st week of September. Leafhopper was observed throughout
the season and crossed threshold 2-3 times. Aphids and mealybug were found above threshold
level during later stage of crop whereas population of whitefly was low to moderate. At
flowering stage, pink bollworm damage was also noticed in FLDs of ICM and Intercropping in
BG II cotton hybrids and monitoring through pheromone traps and management through
recommended insecticides helped to check the infestation of pink bollworm. In FLDs of seed
production (Non Bt-GN Cot. 25), leaf hopper, thrips and bollworm complex (Spotted bollworm,
American bollworm and Pink bollworm) was noticed above ETL and managed through
sprayings of recommended insecticides, provided as critical inputs. No severe attack of diseases
observed during the season in allotted FLDs to beneficiaries. Further, in some of the FLDs of
intercropping of cotton with green gram, damage to cotton crop was also damaged due to
penetration of pigs/swine.
Front Line Demonstrations on ICM in Cotton
The centre had conducted 20 front line demonstrations under ICM in cotton in 50
farmers’ fields. The technologies demonstrated were Integrated nutrient management through
organic source (castor cake) and inorganic fertilizer, IPM for sucking pest management through
Neem product (1500 PPM) in initial crop window for conservation of natural enemies and
monitoring of pink bollworm through pheromone trap with pink bollworm lure and
its
management at critical stage through the recommended insecticide application at later stage of
the crop with intention of preventing carry over too (Chlorpyriphos + Cypermethrin). These
demonstrations gave an average seed cotton yield of 2029 kg/ha as against 1707 kg/ha (Farmers’
practice).
Front Line Demonstrations on Desi / ELS/ Seed production of ELS cotton
Twenty demonstrations were conducted on seed production desi cotton in 50 farmers’

The total rainfall received during kharif 2016 season at Cotton Research Station, Nanded
was 1187.5 mm (June - December, 2016) as against average rainfall of 862.7 mm. Thus 324.8
mm (37.65%) rainfall was excess over average of the station. The rainfall was distributed with
53 rainy days during the season which was about 10 rainy days more over average (43.05). As
regards monthly distribution of rainfall, deficit rains were received during August month and
June, July, September and October had excess rains.
25 FLD Annual Report 2016-17
The season was started in 25th meteorological week (third week of June) and rains
received in second fortnight of June facilitated sowing of cotton demonstrations in 25th
meteorological week and onwards. Intermittent rains in 26thand 27th MW in June – July
immediately after sowing were helpful for satisfactory germination which resulted in good plant
stand and early crop growth.
The dry spell from 32nd - 34th MW in August during vegetative period and square
formation stage had reduced growth of the crop initially. However, rains received in 35th MW
(early September) were helpful for boosting vegetative growth and flowering. Well distributed
rains up to 41st MW (174.8 mm in October) had facilitated development of reproductive parts,
conversion of flowers to bolls and its development.
Scenario of Insect pests and diseases
As regards incidence of sucking pests, it was low to moderate and bollworm incidence
was moderate to severe. The pink bollworm incidence was started from 38th MW (flowering
stage) and was severe during 47th MW (Nov. end). Highest fruiting body damage upto 42 per
cent was recorded in 52nd MW (December end).
Incidence of Alternaria was found during 34th MW with intensity of 2.00 to 19.00 PDI,
bacterial blight during 38th MW in range of 1.50 to 7.25 PDI. The incidence of parawitlt was
observed upto 3.00 PDI during 32nd - 35th MW.

Climate and its Effects on Cotton Crop
The total rainfall received at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri was only 840
mm in 37 rainy days against average rainfall of 535 mm which is 57 per cent more than the
average. However, there was an uneven distribution of rainfall during the season. Out of the total
rainfall, 397 mm rainfall was received only in four meteorological weeks (37-40). There was a
continuous dry spell of 35 days during the crop growth period (32-36MW) which resulted in
increasing the population of sucking pest i.e. thrips, the vector of Tobacco Streak Virus disease.
During crop growth period, at central campus the average maximum temperature was
32.8, minimum temp. 18.5, relative humidity: morning – 59.5% and evening 39.8%. In general,
the crop growth was satisfactory during the season. The climatic conditions during the season
favored the incidence of sucking pests particularly aphid, jassid, thrip and white fly. Alternaria
blight was major disease observed during the crop season while sporadic incidence of Tobacco
streak Virus (TSV) was observed in Ahmednagar district.
27 FLD Annual Report 2016-17
Scenario of Insect Pests and Diseases
The population dynamics study revealed that the population of sucking pestsviz., aphids,
jassids, thrips and whiteflies varied from 2.56 to 122.76, 2.58 to 17.34, 0.06 to 23.08 and 0.84 to
10.38 per 3 leaves per plant with the peak in 49, 37, 35 and 38 MW, respectively during the
season. The infestation of spotted bollworm, E. vittella and American bollworm, H. armigera
varied from 1.03 to 10.69 per cent during the season with the peak in 40 MW. The infestation of
pink bollworm, P. gossypiella on open bolls was 33.85 percent (boll basis) and 16.40 percent
(locule basis). The population of natural enemies’ viz., lady bird beetles, chrysopa and spiders in
cotton ecosystem varied from 0.22 to 5.46, 0.12 to 0.92 and 0.30 to 1.12 predators per plant,
respectively during the season.
Alternaria blight was the major disease observed during the year. First incidence of the
disease was noticed on 18th August (33rd MW) on research farm. The disease progressed
thereafter and maximum i.e. 27.6 % intensity was recorded in 41st MW. TSV incidence was up
to 15 and 22 per cent on research farm and farmers field, respectively.
In general, the crop growth was satisfactory during the season. The climatic conditions
during the season favored the incidence of sucking pests particularly aphid, jassid, thrip and
white fly. Alternaria blight was major disease observed during the crop season while sporadic
incidence of Tobacco streak Virus (TSV) was observed in Ahmednagar district.
