October 2015 Flu Season Reminders Along with the official start of autumn, it is unfortunately the beginning of flu season as well. Many of the same guidelines are still in place to help keep yourself healthy, as well as those around you, with the annual flu shot being at the top of the list. Even though last year’s flu shot was not as effective as some years, it is still your best defense against the flu. Outbreaks can begin as early as October and more than 76 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed so far. According to the CDC, this season’s vaccines have been updated to better match circulating viruses for everyone over 6 months old. The vaccine which comes in various forms, takes up to two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against influenza virus infection. Along with the flu vaccine, good health habits help stop the spread of germs: avoid close contact with those that are sick, stay home when you are sick, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand rub, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth and practice overall good health habits. The most common fall allergy is ragweed; pollenation begins in mid-August and lasts until the first hard freeze. This can cause symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat, congestion, itchy or swollen eyes and hives. The best advice is to close the windows and use your air conditioning and limit your outdoor activities to early morning or late in the evening. Over-the-counter medications can also help; nasal steroid sprays, antihistamine pills or eye drops. Those with the most severe allergies may need to see an allergist. Other fall triggers may be certain plants including cocklebur, tumbleweed, and pigweed. Even places where pollens can settle can be problematic; be especially wary of traditional fall activities like hayrides and corn mazes. You may want to avoid those piles of leaves as well.
