Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Arvind Veluvali of Edina claimed his second consecutive title in the Lincoln-Douglas
competition with a 5-0 victory over
Mahtomedi’s Sophie Krohn in the final
round. Veluvali’s argument against banning
private ownership of guns in the United
States followed nine rounds of debate conducted over two days.
Veluvali was 4-2 through the first six
rounds of competition and he began the
quarterfinals as the No. 7 seed. He opened
the final three rounds with a victory over No.
2-seeded Helen Radovic of Robbinsdale
Armstrong. Veluvali advanced to the championship with a victory over teammate Anand
Mittal, the No. 6 seed, in the semifinals.
Krohn, the top seed following a 5-1 mark
in the first six rounds, earned a spot in the
championship with a victory over Apple
Valley’s Sophie Ober, the fifth seed. Earlier,
she had a win over Apple Valley’s Claire
Hoffa, the No. 8 seed, in the quarterfinals.
The Lincoln-Douglas portion of the tournament, which was an invitational event
from 1986 through 1989, was added to the
tournament in 1990.

semifinals.
The Policy debate portion of the tournament has been conducted since 1902.
Public Forum Debate
Adnan Askari and Sarah Wheaton of St.
Paul Academy & Summit School, who
entered the final rounds as the No. 4 seed,
claimed top honors in Public Forum Debate.
After nine rounds, they recorded a 4-3 championship victory with an affirmative argument over Kevin Bi and Alicia Zhang of East
Ridge of Woodbury. They argued, on balance,
economic sanctions are reducing the threat
that Russia poses to the western interests.
Askari and Wheaton, neither of whom
qualified for the state tournament in 2015,
began the final rounds with a win over fifthseeded Ellie Grossman and Connor Yu of The
Blake School. They advanced to the championship with a semifinal victory over the topseeded team, Raj Purohit and Rylee Smith of
Eagan.
Bi and Zhang advanced to the final with a
victory over Eastview of Apple Valley’s Grace
Hauser and Anika Vij, the No. 3 seed. Earlier,
Bi and Zhang recorded a quarterfinal victory
over Shefali Bijwadia and Ruffi Togramadjian
of St. Paul Academy & Summit School, the
No. 7 seed.

Policy Debate
After eight rounds of debate, Ian Dill and
Dan Bannister of St. Paul Highland Park were
declared the best in the Policy Debate division. Dill and Bannister drew the affirmative
argument, arguing for the United States federal government to substantially curtail its
domestic surveillance. They won the debate
by a 7-0 margin over Never Huber and Grace
Klage of Minneapolis Washburn.
Dill and Bannister, who lost in the semifinals during the 2015 state tournament, were
the No. 3 seed entering the quarterfinals following a 4-1 record in the first five rounds.
