famous African-American leader. He was
also known as “MLK.” MLK was born
January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia.

wife, Coretta Scott, in 1953.

In 1955, an African-American woman,
named Rosa Parks, was arrested for
refusing to give up her seat on a bus.
Dr. King wanted to show America that he
disapproved of what happened to Rosa
Parks. He decided to lead a boycott.

He studied the work of Gandhi.
MLK learned about non-violence.

gathered in Washington, D.C.

The famous “I Have a Dream” speech
was about stopping discrimination.

In 1964, Dr. King became
the youngest person to
receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

President Lyndon Johnson to talk
about the Vietnam War. Dr. King did
NOT agree with the war in Vietnam.

Not all Americans agreed with
Dr. King. In 1968, he was shot
outside of a motel in Memphis,
Tennessee. Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. died on April 4, 1968.

In 1983, President Ronald
Reagan created a new holiday. It
is called Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day. Every year, it is the third
Monday of January. It is a day to
honor and remember Dr. Kings life.
