Guessing Game:
Who are these scientists?
Created by Dr. Thushani Rodrigo-Peiris, member of the
#IAmAWomanInSTEM steering team, for the January
2017 “welcome back” gathering at W.T. Young Library
multipurpose room (B108C) 1/12/17 4:30-6:30 p.m.
-American physicist (Ph.D. In nuclear physics from MIT 1973)-Age 70
-Eighteenth president of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
-Chair of the U.S. President's Intelligence Advisory Board.
-In 1995, President Bill Clinton appointed her as Chairman of the U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
-One of the highest-paid university presidents in the nation.
Combined salary $2.34 million in 2010.
Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson
-1902 –1992
-Ph.D. in Botany, American scientist awarded Nobel Prize in
Physiology or Medicine in 1983.
-Leader in the development of maize cytogenetics.
-Used microscopic analysis to demonstrate many fundamental
genetic ideas (e.g. genetic recombination by crossing-over during
meiosis, role of telomere and centromeres).
Dr. Barbara McClintock
-1921–2003 American biochemist.
-Ph.D. in chemistry (Columbia University 1947), researcher, professor
-Studied cell nucleus, DNA, RNA and protein synthesis. After Watson
and Crick described the structure of DNA in 1953, her work flourished.
-Investigator for the American Heart Association –effect of aging etc.
on arterial wall.
-Dedicated to increasing the number of minority students enrolled in
medical schools.
-Several prestigious recognitions and fellowships.
Dr. Marie Maynard Daly
-1867 –1934, Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist.
-Conducted pioneering research on radioactivity.
-First woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to
win twice, the only person to win twice in multiple sciences.
-First woman to become a professor at the University of Paris, and in
1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in
the Panthéon in Paris.
Dr. Marie Curie
-American physician and former NASA astronaut. Age 50.
-First African American woman to travel in space (in 1992)
-Formed a company researching the application of technology to
daily life.
-Professor-at-Large at Cornell University and was a professor of
Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College.
-Continues to advocate strongly in favor of science education and
getting minority students interested in science.
-Sees science and technology as being very much a part of society.
Dr. Mae Jemison
-1920 –1958, English chemist and X-ray crystallographer.
-Made contributions to the understanding of the molecular
structures of DNA, RNA, viruses, coal, and graphite.
-Her works on coal and viruses were appreciated in her lifetime, but
her contributions to the discovery of DNA were largely recognized
posthumously.
-Her work was key in determining Watson and Crick's 1953 model of
DNA, the correct description of the helical structure of DNA.
Dr. Rosalind Franklin
