June 7, 2009 The Most Holy Trinity Rectory (586) 463-5877 Rectory Fax (586) 463-1734 Dear Parishioners: Thanks to all who made our celebration of Lent-Easter so wonderful. Private meditation and prayer leads to great communal celebrations of Word and Sacrament. Private prayer leads to beautiful Liturgical prayer. Today our concentration is on the mystery of the Holy Trinity. It’s the most basic and foundational mystery of the Catholic Church. Please make sure your children have some elemental understanding of the oneness of God and at the same time the three persons in the Trinity. We are sometimes shocked at what the older students do not know about our faith. We can’t take for granted that they know this tenant of our faith and that it is related to the sign of the cross, the blessing with holy water, and the appropriate response to the blessing of a priest. These are all things parents need to check on from time to time so that the child knows this from home and the catechist can presume the child has been taught this. In the Liturgy, the priest should be able to have the same assumptions. It is a rare occurrence that a child comes with parents for Communion and knows enough to sign them when they receive a blessing. Please check on this with your children. But back to the feast of the Holy Trinity. “Trinity Sunday invites believers to reflection and commitment - to a conscious and ever deepening relationship with the Father, through with and in, the Son who in the presence and power of the Spirit remains to the end of the age. As awkward as the coexistence of worship and doubt might feel in our life of faith, it is not only normal, but also life giving.” (Corbin Eddy) Blessings on all, Fr. Bob, Pastor Michigan Catholic Update As you know, due to our budget limitations, we have had to cancel our home subscriptions for parishioners, but we are happy to announce that we will have copies available at Church for your continued reading. Another way of being assured of your connection to the Michigan Catholic, the paper has offered a special opportunity for you to subscribe directly to your home for only $20.00 per year. This is a wonderful avenue to keep informed of all that is happening in our Archdiocese, to update your faith by the many diverse writers who author columns, and to witness the happenings of everyday life by the featured articles. If you did not receive one of these subscription forms found in last weekend’s bulletin, extra copies are in the Rectory, or you can contact the Michigan Catholic directly by calling (313) 224-8002. CSA 2009 Thank you to those who have remitted their 2009 gift. So far, 204 families have responded with a total of $36,040 in pledges towards our goal of $85,462. Your gift , great or small, is needed even more than ever in these stressful times. Thank you! The Trinity Trying to grasp the concept of the Holy Trinity is an act of folly, impossible. Nonetheless, even a vague understanding of God can help bring us to a closer relationship with him. A concept called trilateralism describes a basic reality in the world. Trilateralism describes structures consisting of three elements. The area of a single box or sphere actually consists of three dimensions, sometimes called length, width and height, but other names as well, such as, length, width and depth. The labels are not important. What is important is that the three dimensions equal the one reality of space. If space were only one dimension, the only possibility would be a straight line. Even then, no matter how thin the line, it would have thickness and, thus, 3 dimensions. One- or two-dimensional space is impossible. Likewise, the three dimensions of past, present and future form one time-line. It is impossible to conceive of space and time as anything other than three-dimensional. Thus, we live in a particular place at a particular time. We cannot imagine it any other way. And, yet, God exists in every place at every time! On the other hand, we see personhood as onedimensional. Each of us is a single person constituting a single being. There are many persons in the world and many beings. But each person is one being. And each being is one person. We cannot be two persons or two beings. For all practical purposes, the words are synonyms, except in one instance. Because God is three persons, yet only one being! The concept is so far beyond our own experience that we can know its reality only because it was revealed to us by God. People have always known about God in a vague way through nature, its majesty, its beauty and its sheer size and complexity and later though concepts such as trilateralism. But then Jesus came along and claimed to be God. And somehow he convinced his disciples that he was not insane and really who he claimed to be. Meeting him alive, after he died on the cross, was rather convincing! Finally, after years of reflection, the Church arrived at the reality of one being consisting of three persons; that is, one God consisting of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They learned that the Father begets the Son; not begat, because God exists outside of time and is always begetting. There was never a time when the Father existed before begetting the Son. (Continued on page 4) Page 4 “The Beacon” — St. Hubert Church, Harrison Township (Continued from page 3) Furthermore, the Father and Son have a relationship of love. This love is not static, but dynamic and full of pulsating activity. Their love for each other is so alive, so real, that their loving relationship itself begets (and always has begotten) a Person we call the Holy Spirit. What does that mean to us? Well, if we want to be warm, we go near the fire. If we want joy, power, peace and eternal life, we have to get close to the One who has them. If we let God have his way, we will come to share in the very life of Christ. We will share a life begotten, not made, a life that has always existed and always will. In Jesus we will be children of the Father and we will love the Father as Jesus does. Caught up in their love we will share in their dynamic, pulsating life and the Holy Spirit will dwell and grow in us. The whole purpose of Christianity is simply that, nothing else. Knowing this, understanding that the eternal love of Father, Son and Holy Spirit is the basic requirement for life itself, we can finally grasp the necessity of loving each other, even our enemies. Our lives depend on it. Real love, from which flow genuine peace and happiness, consists of living our lives for others. Self-centered love leads to misery and death. Other-oriented love leads to eternal life with God. May you experience the Lord’s peace today and every day. But Jesus says in today’s Gospel that when we are obedient to God’s will — when we use our gifts to serve one another — we are part of His family. “Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me.” This is the gift, and fruit, of Baptism As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity we also realize the mystery of how much God loves and cares for us each day. Believing in this our lives can then overflow in thanksgiving and praise. Your gift to St. Vincent de Paul will help the poor to believe in the mystery of God’s love for them. Page 5 Sacred Heart Major Seminary Last Sunday, on the Vigil of Pentecost, Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron ordained Fathers Raymond Arwady, Philip Ching, David Cybulski, Charles White and Michael Wilkes to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Detroit at our Mother Church, the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. All five men studied for the priesthood at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, which is the college and graduate seminary of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal provide a significant portion of the financial support for candidates who prepare for the priesthood there. Sacred Heart’s student body also includes seminarians studying for the priesthood for other dioceses throughout the country and world and lay men participating in the archdiocesan permanent diaconate program. Also, through the Institute for Ministry at Sacred Heart, lay women and men earn graduate and undergraduate degrees and diplomas in religious studies. Many of these students serve as catechists in parishes and schools throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit. The 2009 Ordination Mass will be rebroadcast throughout June on CTND, and a Webcast is available at AODonline.org. Your gifts to the CSA also support CTND and the Archdiocese of Detroit Web site, as well as The Michig an Cat holic, which publishes a weekly program guide for CTND. For more information about Sacred Heart Major Seminary, CTND, or other CSAfunded programs and ministries, go to AODonline.org. When speaking of the Trinity, the nature of mystery always surfaces. The meaning and significance of mystery can puzzle us. If we cannot understand or appreciate it, what difference does it make for our faith lives? This is the challenge any homilist faces on this feast. As humans we desire to understand, no matter how mysterious. Thus we attempt to articulate meaning while acknowledging our limited capacity to do so. Thoughts and language seem so limited when attempting to explain the Trinity. Jesus provides the best avenue to Trinitarian understanding. As God incarnate, Jesus manifests to us the fullness of God, while being fully one of us. Jesus, who knows our daily human struggles, models for us how to live full human lives in conformity with God's desires and intentions. Love of others without restrictions or stipulations always guided Jesus' words and deeds, which communicate the very essence of God's being. Love of others is at the heart of our love for God and God's love for us. Jesus' Spirit supports, guides, and strengthens us to try again when we fail to love one another. What is the Trinity? It is God who creates, loves and sustains us with unending love for all time. God, in the person of Jesus and through the Spirit's power, invites us to respond in love while reaching out to others. How is Jesus a guide in exploring the mystery of the Trinity? ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc, New Berlin, WI 53151 “The Beacon” — St. Hubert Church, Harrison Township Archbishop Invites Faithful to Prayer in Economic Distress This week’s bankruptcy filing by General Motors adds to the disruption and uncertainty many in the Detroit area are feeling in regards to the economy and their own futures. Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron has said he is keeping all of those impacted by the latest developments in his prayers. He also invites the faithful to join him in imploring the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help, for her comfort in these times of economic distress. Each Tuesday at 6 p.m., devotionals to Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help are broadcast on Catholic Television Network of Detroit (CTND); Michigan Catholic Radio (WCAR, 1090 AM); and via podcast on the Web site of the Archdiocese of Detroit at www.aodonline.org. Prayer responses and recordings of the devotionals also can be found on the archdiocese Web site. Let’s Talk … Family Planning Natural Family Planning (NFP) only physicians are medical doctors from a variety of religious backgrounds who do not prescribe, perform, or refer patients for abortion, sterilization, contraception or barrier methods of family planning, or in vitro fertilization. NFP–only physicians recognize the negative consequences of these various medical procedures and their possible effects on a couple’s future health and ability to become pregnant. NFP–only physicians choose to promote Natural Family Planning among their married patients as a way of regulating family size. These physicians promote chastity for their young and unmarried patients. For additional information go to our web page at www.nfponline.org or call 313–237–4679. A Mission: Possible Moment… “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Although the 11 disciples were located in Galilee, their outreach was to be universal, to all nations, not just to the Jewish people. This must have seemed an insurmountable task but would Jesus have asked this if he didn’t believe they could accomplish it? It is the same for us now. As baptized Christians we are called to full and active participation. When we attend Mass we respond, sing and share in the Eucharist. Another way of participating is as a lector to proclaim the Word of God or as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. Some of us are called to Page 7 these ministries and they help to feed us spiritually. Others are called to serve the Church working in a parish. This could be you. If you believe that God is calling you, please check out www.missionpossibledetroit.org and see what ministry would fit you. – Julie Neal, worship coordinator and pastoral minister, St. Anne Parish, Ortonville FLOWER: Families Live Out the Word in Everyday Routines Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you… Each time we bring a child to baptism, we heed this command. Within the Rite of Baptism, parents are asked if they accept the responsibility to raise their children in the faith, introduce them to God and help them keep God’s commandments. Godparents are asked if they agree to help the parents with these duties. Our “yes” means that we embark on a journey of making disciples—we baptize them and teach them through our actions, what it means to be a disciple, what it means to love, forgive, and to live in relationship with the Trinitarian Lord. YOUTH MINISTRY Parish ministry FOR youth, WITH youth, TO youth, and BY youth Youth Ministry Coordinators: Linda Jarvi (High School) and Marge Kohler (Middle School) Go ..... Red (Angel) Wings? Let's flash back to last Saturday evening: The crowd streams in....music is playing.....the crowd comes to a hush as we begin. Then we begin the back and forth of exclamations and quiet prayerful moments. All eyes are focused on the folks dressed in red. As at all celebrations we share food and drink together. Then, once again, celebrating the great victory, we head home to continue sharing the good news. Now I bet you think I was just describing my attendance at the Red Wings game last Saturday at the Joe. Actually I was describing my attendance at the Mass celebrating Pentecost! With just a little change of attitude perhaps we can see our weekly attendance at Mass as a communal celebration. We can appreciate the friendship and support we gain. We can give honor and praise to what is most important in our lives. And....if we really want to stretch this comparison....perhaps we won't get frustrated and antsy if we happen to go 'into overtime" at Mass!!!! It's all in how we look at it. Have a blessed week!! Mrs. Kohler Page 8 “The Beacon” — St. Hubert Church, Harrison Township FAITH FORMATION NEWS Why Family Faith? What do you think of when you hear the word “Church”? Maybe you think of our worship space, a place of brick and mortar where we gather together each week. Perhaps you think, more accurately, of our St. Hubert community itself, when we as the people of God gather together for worship and for service. Maybe you have a broader vision, thinking of the worldwide Church, under the leadership of the pope. But when you hear “Church”, do you picture your own family, gathered in your living room or around the dining room table? If you don’t, then an essential part of what it means to be “Church” is missing, because a crucial part of what it means to be Church is the “domestic Church.” It is this vision of the domestic Church that family faith promotes. We read national surveys that indicate how seldom parents have meaningful conversations with their children on any subject. We are often fragmented, with parents and children scattered about at different activities. Even when all are at home, how often is one person, watching TV, another reading a book, another on the computer and yet other playing a video game, occupying the same space but not really together. Family faith gives the structure, the resources and the opportunity for parents to really share faith with their children and in doing so to gather closer together as a family. When parents gather with their children to talk together and to share what their faith and their love of God means to them, this is sacred time. Home Depot used to have a commercial in which the slogan was “You can build it. We can help.” That is also a great motto for the Family Faith model of faith formation that is beginning here at St. Hubert. You as parents have the primary role of forming, nurturing and informing the faith of your children. Our role as a Faith Formation staff is to help you in that sacred responsibility. There will be many ways in which we will be doing this, including a family handbook, family faith based activities both as large groups and to do at home, an ongoing continually updated website and others. One way we will be providing that support is one that I will be heading up, through ongoing adult Faith Formation. How many Catholics ended any meaningful learning about their faith when they were confirmed? Yet, that dimly remembered early adolescent faith proves inadequate to us when we face the challenges of adulthood. It also can seem inadequate when faced with the challenge of passing on our faith to our children. A large part of my responsibility next academic year will be to help parents to grow in their adult understanding of their faith so they can more confidently pass it on to their children. I have a love for adult teaching and am excited about the possibilities this opens up. It is an exciting opportunity and new chapter for our entire faith community. Mr. Allan Ranusch, St. Hubert Faith Formation Director Email: [email protected] Family Faith Formation Since the fall of 2008, the Faith Formation Staff and the Education Commission have been studying different programs of Family Faith. We had several guest speakers present the programs that have been successful at their parishes. We also were allowed to view two area churches as their sessions were taking place. We talked with parents, catechists and the coordinators. After we made our decision on the series we would use, we had a representative from the Archdiocese of Detroit facilitate three workshops for our entire Staff. Now that the Family Faith Registration is upon us this weekend, I would like to address some of the recently asked questions here: What does the tuition pay for? Faith Formation tuition covers the phones system, internet, copy machine, postage, office supplies, hospitality, student textbooks, instructional materials and guest speakers. The tuition also covers cost of training our volunteer Catechists. It does not cover staff salaries or benefits. Now that the program will be once a month, why has the tuition cost remained almost the same? In past years we did not pay our volunteer catechists, nor did we pay to use L’Anse Creuse Public schools. So that has not caused a reduction in our cost for the new program. Therefore we will still be supplying materials for our program here, as well as activities and materials to be sent home for the remainder of the month. Please explain the new family book fee charge New this year is an At Home Family Guide. This spiral bound book is good for Grades 1 – 5. Only one book is needed for each family and can be reused over in the coming years. Your tuition will cover the cost of each elementary student’s textbook. Each Middle School textbooks and bible will be used for the three years they attend Grades 6, 7 & 8. So your tuition will cover the cost of Middle School textbooks and the book fee will cover the cost of bibles and/or handouts to be used. High School youth will be using The Catholic Youth Bible and The Catholic Faith Handbook for Teens as a resource from Grade 9 through 12. Your support is greatly appreciated. We are here to answer your questions. Please do not hesitate to call the Faith Formation office at 4635875.
