Hawaii, Big Island Waterfalls, Volcanoes & Stars

Tentative Schedule
Sunrise 6:09 am and Sunset 6:18 pm
Day 0 - September 19
8:00-9:30 pm
Registration, instructions, schedule, welcome and
introductions.
We will meet in the hotel lobby (left of the front desk). For those
interested in camera gear loans will be checking out equipment at
this time.
Day 1 – September 20
4:35 am
Field photography session - sunrise. Photograph the ocean surf
with rising sun with rugged coastal line. Since we will not have
time for instruction before this we will make it an optional field
session. Return to hotel.
8:00 am
Breakfast and Break. We will return from our shoot and go to
breakfast at our hotel, included in fee. Break
11:00 am
Lecture: Jennifer will lecture on Custom Camera Operations and
Tips and Techniques for Nature Photography including
photographing the ocean surf, fast and long exposures of waves,
use of polarizing filters, neutral density filters and more.
1:00 pm
Lunch at hotel, included in fee.
2:00 pm
Lecture: Learn the basics on Photographing the Night Sky and the
Milky Way, techniques for photographing volcanoes and proper
exposure.
3:00 pm
Evening field session. Black sand beaches, palm trees and lava
rocks along the beach. It is very common to see Green Sea Turtles
sunning themselves on the warm sand and rocks. Jennifer will
demo photography tips and techniques in the field. Return to the
hotel after sunset.
8:00 pm
Dinner (not included in fee). Meals are a wonderful time to
continue photography discussions and questions.
Day 2 – September 21
4:50 am
Field photograph session: sunrise session along the beautiful
rocky coast. Mid morning shoot photographing waterfalls with lush
greenery.
9:15 am
Approximate time. We will return from our shoot and go to
Breakfast at hotel, included in fee.
11:00 am
Lecture on Nature and Landscape composition. Jennifer will
discuss compositional guidelines, making a dynamic image through
lens selection and use of hyperfocal focusing.
12:00 noon
Lunch at hotel, included in fee.
1:00 pm
Receive critiques your images for what you did well and
suggestions for improvement. Printing of your favorite images.
3:00 pm
Field photography session. We will head to Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park for photographing ferns and volcanoes. We will stay
for sunset and dusk. Then while we wait for the night sky to get
really dark we can have dinner followed by a night photography
session of the stars and Kilauea, one of the world's most active
volcanoes. We will photograph the red glow the Kilauea Caldera
(weather permitting).
Day 3 – September 22
8:30 am
Breakfast at hotel, included in fee. No morning session as we will
have a long day plus night photograph in the evening. You can
photograph sunrise from just outside the hotel or we may go
shooting if weather doesn’t keep us out late.
9:30 am
Lecture & Critiques: Image processing of night photography.
Return any gear you don’t want to use. Critiques of your images.
Finish any printing we didn’t get to last time.
12:00-11:00 pm
Photography field session. We will have lunch on the road.
We have a long drive to our afternoon and evening photography
session but it is worth it. Coconut palm trees line the beach with
a lagoon in the foreground, a perfect place for photographing
sunset over the ocean. In addition to the palm trees you can come
across amazing rock formations and green sea turtle here. We will
have an early dinner. Drive back to hotel.
Day 4 – September 23
8:30 am
Breakfast
9:30 -12:30 Field Session: We head out to photograph waterfalls and the
beautiful botanical gardens.
12:30 to 11:30 pm Sunset and field session at Mauna Kea. We can head out to
a local gallery for some inspiration and have lunch. Then we go to
the summit of Mauna Kea and the observatories, a long drive but
the views are amazing. If we are lucky we can see Maui from the
peak and if the weather is clear we will photograph the stars.
After sunset, we will go down in elevation, 11,000 feet, to
photograph the stars and Milky Way (weather permitting). We will
take dinner and snacks on the road with us. You can stay and
photograph along the coast if the elevation is too high.

Leave for home with new photography skills and wonderful memories.
