The Lions Roar Leopold Cricket Club www.facebook.com/leopoldcc twitter.com/Leopoldcricket March 2016 Volume Issue Under Marshall Law When a young lad from Benalla moved to Geelong as a teenager with bold plans to develop his cricket career it was the Drysdale Cricket Club that first saw glimpses of potential, that in season 2015 /2016 is now being turned into solid and consistent GCA results. Tim Marshall moved to Drysdale and in a few short years had become part of cricket history at Drysdale being part of the clubs first ever premiership. Fast forward a few years and with turf cricket on his mind, Tim joined the Lions in the season of 2006/ 2007. His first game at Leopold delivered modest results, out for a duck and figures of 0-64 against a rampaging North Geelong team that smashed Leopold for over 320 runs. Over the next 9 years Tim has continued to work hard at his game and with a no frills attitude has developed into one of the competitions finest all round cricketers. A role model of perseverance and working on improving his game, Tim has had a breakout year in a season with little First X1 highlights for the club. The “Sheriff” has been a shining light with 402 runs at a healthy 36.5 to go with 21 wickets 19.1. A move to the top of the order has proved perfect for Tim as he has delivered 4 x 50s this season. Its no coincidence that his best average over his career at Leopold has been batting as an opener. The culmination of a successful season came on the back of a standout 5-17 & 63 in the 2nd last round against Geelong West backed up with a blistering 51 off just 23 balls in the 2nd innings against South Barwon last week. He continues to focus on the task at hand and playing his role for the team with a no frills approach. Closing in on 2000 runs and with over 200 wickets he is starting to make his mark alongside some of the clubs great all-rounders of years gone by. partners. Tough season creates Opportunities This year has been one of the most challenging in recent times and has asked us to dig deep as a club in many ways. While ladder positions are a good indicator of the efforts put in for the season it leaves a lot of hard work next season to again begin our rise back into the finals across all grades. In the first X1 we were up against it before the first round when coach Sriram Krishnamurthy broke his contract and took up a position in NZ. With a season ending back injury to captain Jason Mallet, A move to Noosa by gun bat Ben O’Brien and an unexpected mercy dash back to India by Sriram Kalyanaraman it left a massive hole in our depth after a successful recruiting campaign over winter netted four quality senior players. With such significant loss- es and the late appointment of new skipper Luandre van Wyk, wins in the early part of the season were very hard to come by. With adversity in the 1st X1 it provided some great opportunities for our junior players to experience turf cricket. 7 players delivered centuries (and 50 half centuries were made). Joel Speedie, Anthony Kilfoyle, David Ford, James Burton, Matt Sinkinson, Lachlan Alford and Chris Aston the centurions, while with the ball we were led by Ben Horne’s amazing 8-28, Marcus Stow 6-8, young gun Declan Gibson’s 6-10, Ben Horne 619 and Marcus Stow 6-51. Matthew McFarlane in the under 15s team delivered the best junior figures for the season with 5-15 while Ben Vale was the outstanding junior with scores of 83, 77no, 73 and 63 in the under 17s. Ben was also rewarded for a stellar season with a 1st X1 cap. While our experienced players stepped up to the mark, it was the further development of our juniors that will hold us in good stead for the future. The first X1 debuted the following players this season. Rob O'Donnell, Scott Burrowes, Luandre van Wyk, Reece Plumridge, Lachie Cameron, Ben Vale. We also continued to blood juniors on turf in the 2nd X1 with Jacob Speedie, Dylan Ryan, Nic Cameron. Going forward one of our big challenges will be to manage the mindset of our juniors over such a long season. As an example Ben Vale batted in 27 innings this season, a huge expectation for a anyone at a young age to keep balanced and delivering solid results. Role Model for Perseverance When Lachie Alford’s season ended prematurely last year in round 10, it was the culmination of a tough year that promised so much only to be riddled with injuries that stole the enjoyment from the game. After starting in the 1sts, Alfie struggled to enjoy the season and after ending the season early could have been lost from the club after contemplating a move. Fast forward to this season and it would have been really easy for him to have not bothered. But hard work and a solid pre season had revitalised his career and for the first time in years Alfie entered a season relatively injury free. It wasn't just injuries though that were to determine this season’s performance, it was his commitment to do the hard work that stood out. Alfie started in the 3rds, a long way away from his season opener the previous year, but after a 3 wicket haul was promoted to the 2nds for round 2. With strong depth and little opportunity he was forced back to the 3rds. In years gone by with ailing body and mind it would have been easy to drift away but Alfie without knowing it showed what it takes to work hard, play the team role and to put the club first. While others openly shared frustrations about where they were picked Alfie was brilliant and just kept working hard until he was rewarded with a brilliant 104no in round 11. There hasn't been a more deserved century in the club in a long time. Alfie is what good clubs are all about and our young players can learn a lot from him about humility and perseverance. Barefoot Bowls is a winner With the long season drawing to a close it was time for some fun for our junior players with a spot of barefoot bowling at major sponsor The Leopold Sportmans Club. It was a great chance for the kids to have some fun away from the nets and enjoy learning about a new type of game. A great turn out of 40 players ensured the function was a great success. Some pizza supplied by Godfathers Pizza and Pasta and the cool drinks from the Sporties for the parents were the perfect support for a great night. We hope that this event can become an annual event on the junior calendar as we continue to support both the junior program and our commitment to our major sponsors. T20 Runners Up A late resurgent and some powerful hitting from Rob O’Donnell wasn't enough to bring home the T20 cup. Chasing East’s 6-172, we fell short by 20 runs in a gallant effort in front of a huge vocal crowd. Page 2 The Lions Roar Junior News, Proudly supported by our Junior Section partner…...….. Well another season is almost complete with over 110 junior players taking the field for the Lions. It takes a big effort to run such a large junior and Milo program given that some clubs have less than 20 juniors in total. A big thanks to our Junior Coordinator Marcus Stow for his hard work all season as well as our coaches, Matt Sinkinson, Luke Innes, Mark Adams, Joel Speedie, Matt Smith, Marcus Stow, Chad Butterworth and Doug Jarvie from Queenscliff. A special mention to junior player Baden Giblett who coordinated our Milo program as part of his studies at SEDA this season. battle this Saturday morning. Good luck guys. After a stellar career that lasted over 50 years at both Leopold and Geelong City, Graeme Drake was on hand to pass on some words of wisdom at Lara to debutant number 289 in Reece Plumridge. Drakey was one of our clubs most decorated players playing 241 games for the club. An incredible 6,266 runs at an average of 29.70 which included 53 half centuries and 6 centuries was only a small part of the contribution he has delivered to the Lions. 129 wickets and 50 catches and multiple premierships rounded off a stellar career from this great man. Reece has now played 5 games in the firsts and has settled in very well. With 5 wickets in 35 overs with a best of 3-35 in round 12 against South Barwon. Bowling in tandem with Harry James, they put the brakes on the strong South batting line up. The future is looking bright for Reece and a significant amount of credit must go to our wonderful spin bowling coach Frank Meek for his investment in our young spinners. When certain people speak you tend to listen and take note. In round 11 when Ben Vale was promoted to get a taste of firsts cricket we were honored as a club to welcome back Geelong's greatest ever all rounder back into the rooms in Darren Kiddle. What Darren hasn't done in Geelong cricket is not worth doing. Check out these stats for DK’s 1sts career at Leopold, 8 times LCC Club Champion, Dual 1sts premiership player, 151 1st X1 games played at Leopold, 8 centuries, most by any LCC player, Highest score in a grand final, 102, Most career wickets at LCC 295. Coupled with stints at Grovedale, Newcomb & District and Bell Post Hill, DK’s stats for his Division One 1st X1 career are impressive. He is statistically the best all round cricketer to play in the GCA’s 120 year history. Darren Kiddle: 1984—2011 269 1st x1 Games (5th highest in history) 6,116 1st X1 Career Runs (15th highest in GCA) 10 Division One 1sts Centuries 508 1st X1 Career Wickets (6th Highest in history) 4 Premierships (Leopold 2, BPH 2) 11 Country Week Carnivals A mere 12,382 runs, 14 centuries and 424 wickets for Leopold between these two legends. The Best of the Best (all grades, all formats) In a feast of runs this season, 7 players made the magical 100, while an incredible 50 half centuries were scored. 11 players took 5 wickets or more in an innings across all grades. Page 4 The Lions Roar The Bendigo Bank, Heart of our community As with all local sporting clubs sponsor partners are hard to find and just as hard to reward for their support. When you have a good partnership it works well. We could not be happier with the ongoing support we receive from the Leopold Community Bank. The Bank this year has been instrumental in helping us invest further in additional turf wickets that has allowed more juniors to experience turf cricket than ever before. Their support has also helped purchase new safety nets in our training complex. Without the ongoing support of the team at Leopold we would find it very tough to continue to provide the best possible facilities for our players to experience. Marg McFadyen and the team at Leopold Bendigo Bank have been long time supporters of our club and we hope the partnership continues for many years to come as we provide a safe and welcoming club for the people of Leopold to enjoy. On Monday 29th February we were joined by board member Trevor McFarlane who presented our sponsorship package to Treasurer Stephen Ash and Vice President Chris Hennessy who were proudly displaying their Bendigo Bank training Clothing.
