Acoustics Testing Service A national centre for acoustical services with ISO accreditation We are surrounded by the science of acoustics – from shopping malls, homes and schools to music, medicine and industry. Acoustics plays a key role in how well we speak and hear in these environments, from the level and type of background noise, to the type of insulation used. It’s also important in understanding how well the structures themselves perform. At The University of Auckland, the Acoustics Testing Service (ATS) both tests and researches this interdisciplinary science to find out how best to manage acoustics – the mechanical waves in gases, liquids and solids that range from vibration and sound to ultrasound and infrasound. ATS is an independent research based facility that can help your organisation with: Reverberation chamber wall test facility • Testing the acoustical properties and performance of new materials, constructions and equipment Customised facilities • Sound measurements (in classrooms, rest-homes, theatres) • ATS is home to three reverberation chambers, an IEC listening room, and an anechoic chamber. Services to acoustical consultants • Research and development of acoustics and noise control • Equipment testing for hire • Developing sustainable practices around acoustics in urban design and planning • The three Reverberation Chambers are linked by heavy steel doors and a removable standard concrete floor section. The three chambers are vibration isolated from one another so that sound can only pass from one to the other via the test wall, or test roof/floor section. • Removable concrete floor section Reverberation and Anechoic Chambers. These facilities were specially designed for acoustical testing to international (ISO) standards of building materials, sound producing machinery and audio equipment. Listening room. Fully compliant with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) specifications, the Listening Room was developed specially for subjective hearing in domestic environments. All testing and measurements are computer-controlled with testing accuracy maintained at the level required for international laboratory accreditation. ATS has particular expertise in the areas of testing building insulation, floor ceiling constructions with improved impact insulation, and the acoustics of teaching spaces with special applications in primary schools. Acoustics is now an integral part of how we manage and sustainthe different environments around us. Acoustics is now an integral part of how we manage and sustain the different environments around us.
