annual report 2013-2014 - Chicago Waldorf School

ANNUAL REPORT
2013-2014
MISSION
Chicago Waldorf School provides a diverse Pre K-12th grade education
that supports the development of self-directed young adults dedicated to
the pursuit of ongoing learning and eager to contribute positively to the
global society of the 21st century. This education is rooted in the ideals,
insights and pedagogical methods of Rudolf Steiner who stated,
“Our highest endeavor must be to develop free
human beings, who are able of themselves to
impart purpose and direction to their lives.”

CORE VALUES
EXCELLENCE
We weave academic and artistic excellence with social engagement and moral awareness into an integrated whole.
We work with educational principles established by rudolf steiner to encourage imagination, flexibility in thinking and
a love of learning.
RESPECT AND REVERENCE
We work in respect and reverence for the gifts and destinies of our students. We encourage in them the same
respect and reverence for the wonders of the world and of their own humanity.
WHOLENESS AND SELF-RELIANCE
We build wholeness and self-reliance by protecting the essential quality of childhood. We introduce age-appropriate
questions and challenges progressively to encourage initiative and self-direction in our students as they grow.
COMMUNITY
We respect the dignity of each person and aspire to be a diverse, healthy and collaborative community. We apply
waldorf education ways relevant to our time and place, and we inspire our students to reach out to the world.

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The School Executive Committee would like to thank our
faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, parents, alumni and alumni
parents, friends and, of course, students for a thoroughly
successful year. The Chicago Waldorf School community’s
continuous and inspiring gifts of time, talent and treasure are
remarkable. With them we achieved several strategic goals.
Our pedagogical programming continues to strengthen
and reflect an educational excellence of which we can all
be proud. Our high school program expanded this year to
include technical arts classes in which students studied
photography, digital art and digital publishing. At the end-ofyear Rose Ceremony, our middle school student musicians
shared a moving rendition of the contemporary song
Radioactive accompanied by our very own middle school
rock band. On the court, our high school boys volleyball
team capped off its strongest season yet with an undefeated
record and the league championship. In gym, our middle
and high school students also took up an exploration
of the daring yet graceful movements of Parkour class.
Our students are continually presented with a myriad of
educational experiences that build a foundational balance
of thoughtful intellect, heart-felt compassion for others, and
an ability to meet the contemporary world with confidence.
To that end, we are so proud of our 13 graduating seniors
who were accepted to the schools of their choice and will
be taking off on their new adventures.
Through a yearlong collaborative process we reviewed
and renewed our Strategic Plan. We remain steadfast in
our commitment to our Mission, Vision and Core Values
as they connect our school to the fundamental principles
of Waldorf education. We are excited to share the final
Board and College approved Strategic Plan for 2014-2017,
with particular attention given to our Strategic Marketing
initiatives, at the Fall All-School Meeting.
We are also pleased to share progress on a new initiative
to pursue a CWS satellite Parent Child/Early Childhood
Center. A great deal of work was done by the Permanent
Valerie Colis
Board of Trustees Chair
Campus Committee to research city demographics in order
to target the right location, culminating in a recommendation
of the Lincoln Square neighborhood because of its potential
to be a strong enrollment pipeline to our main campus. We
are excited to announce a new winter session Parent Child
program this year with further plans to grow into a full Early
Child Center in the coming years.
At several events during the year we provided updates to
our Permanent Campus Search. As detailed in our Fall and
Spring All-School Meetings and the Spring Celebration,
the development of this critical work will continue into
the coming school year. We continue our efforts to secure
a permanent campus and are vigorously exploring facility
options on the north side of the city.
The partner initiative for our Permanent Campus search is
our Capital Campaign. We want to thank everyone who has
made a pledge or given to our capital campaign over the last
year. This has been a year of developing plans and sharing
our school vision. Over the coming year we are committed
to communicating the critical nature of this campaign to
our entire school community—including grandparents,
alumni, alumni parents and friends. All together our
Chicago Waldorf School community will need to look inside
ourselves to see what of our time, talents and treasure we
can give to the school at this critical juncture. Through a
successful Capital Campaign and 100% support from our
entire school community we will be able to actualize our
Permanent Campus goals.
Over the year, it has been a privilege and honor to strive
towards these ambitious goals for the school. On behalf
of the leadership of the school, thank you for your time,
support and commitment to the Chicago Waldorf School.
Your gifts and dedication provide us the opportunity to
offer the highest quality Waldorf educational experience
for our students.
Warmest Regards,
Colleen Everhart

SPRING CELEBRATION 2014
On April 12, 2014 the Chicago Waldorf School community gathered
for a night of fun to celebrate the successes of the capital
campaign to date, and learned more about the journey toward
realizing our future home. More than 200 parents, faculty and staff,
grandparents, alumni and friends enjoyed festive hors d’oeuvres,
deserts and dancing at John Barleycorn River North.
“...the journey toward
realizing our future home.”
Administrative Director, Luke Goodwin, spoke and presented
the progress to date in the permanent campus initiatives. Sarah
Wellington, PTO Co-Chair, also spoke about a school-wide art
project the PTO is launching that will commemorate the school’s
journey to a permanent campus. The creation of the piece will
involve every member of the school community, and will recognize
this milestone in the school’s biography—a celebration of how
the synergy of school and community has helped us to reach our
permanent campus goal.
GROWING INTO OUR POTENTIAL
2013-2014 was a year of developing the vision of what the Chicago Waldorf School
permanent campus could be—a location designed to bring our values and priorities
to the fore, founded on Waldorf principles and enabling our ability to grow for future
generations of Chicago Waldorf School families.
The partner of this inspirational permanent campus work is the Capital Campaign.
Bringing our vision of a permanent campus to life requires the time, talent and treasure
of our entire community. The Capital Campaign Committee members are working
hard to provide every individual with the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful
way. Over the next 12 months every family in the community, as well as our extended
community—grandparents, alumni, alumni parents and friends—will be contacted.
Together, we can turn our long held dream of a permanent home into a reality.

ENDOWMENT FUNDS
An endowment is a fund whose principal is required to stay intact and is invested to create an ongoing source
of income to offset expenses. We are fortunate benificiaries of three endowments which have been generously
established by members of our community.
The Victor and Dinah Lazar Endowment Fund is designed to assist with tuition adjustment initiatives.
The Elizabeth Lauder Early Endowment Fund is designated to receive gifts and bequests for the high school
women’s basketball team uniforms.
The Joe Ruscitti Athletic Endowment Fund was created to support team sports, equipment and personnel at
Chicago Waldorf School. The endowment itself may be used to support the purchase and development of
athletic facilities for a permanent home.
We are grateful to the following individuals who supported Chicago Waldorf School’s future by contributing to
the endowment funds. You are truly creating a legacy for future students

THE SENIOR CLASS OF 2014
Talia Adams has been accepted to the University of
Redlands’ Johnston Center for Integrative Studies, but
has deferred for one year. Talia will seek employment
this summer and looks forward to auditioning for theater
productions in Chicago in the coming year.
Paco Alvarez will attend Carleton College in Minnesota.
Paco plans to study English and Philosophy, and looks
forward to involvement in one of their extracurricular
writing groups and perhaps the film society.
Malcolm Collins is looking forward to schooling at the
University of Iowa, a large Big Ten school with strong
academics. Although Malcolm is interested in pre-law, the
strong artistic and performing arts culture helps to create
a diverse and open campus culture which he appreciates.
Adele Erickson will attend Lynn University in Boca Raton,
Florida next fall. In making her decision, she was swayed
by the photojournalism program and high number of
international students.
Rebecca Lavin-Burgher is headed to Eckerd College
this fall with hopes to explore several different avenues
of study, but she is considering journalism with a focus
on photography. The required freshman program, “The
Human Experience” happily reminds Rebecca of the
Waldorf approach to education.
Jeremy Marder is excited to attend the University of
Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Jeremy hopes to explore
majors, but currently has an interest in the Global Studies
program.
Sarah Matthews looks forward to college at the
University of Oregon. UO has an excellent journalism
and communications program, an area which interests
Sarah greatly. Sarah was pleasantly surprised during her
visit to campus and she is already in communication with
students at Duck TV, the local station, and she is hopeful
that she can get involved there right away.
Alex Morson is east-coast bound and will attend
Connecticut College to study computer science or math.
He likes the location near an urban area, and noted after
his visit there that the students seemed very welcoming
and participatory in class.
Iris Pavelic will stay in the Chicago area to attend North
Park University with a major in chemistry. North Park has
a very diverse student body and offers pre-pharmacy
advising, which is important to Iris’ long term goals. Iris
will sit for the pharmacy technician licensing exam over
the summer and hopes to be working in the Walgreens
pharmacy department by fall.
Merci Randolph has a great deal of enthusiasm for her
college choice, Dickinson College. She noted that they
have an organic farm which partially supplies the cafeteria
and that she will be able to bicycle there and perhaps work
there. Merci is drawn to the social justice focus and many
progressive historical traditions relating to civil rights and
women’s rights.
Cole Ruscitti has lined up a number of intriguing
opportunities after graduation. He will begin his post-high
school experiences working at an auto shop 3 days per
week over the summer. He also hopes to help expand his
mom’s dog-boarding business, and will continue building
furniture, decks, cabinets and fences as he has done in
past summers.
Lindsay Thompson will head to the west coast to attend
Evergreen State College, a school known for its unique
interdisciplinary model. Lindsay speaks highly of the
active and community-oriented student body and noted
that there seems to be a great deal of school pride. She
looks forward to leaving her mark on Evergreen. Lindsay is
already in touch with the volleyball coach and may play for
the Geoducks.
Joe Wendy decided on Elon University in North Carolina.
Joe would like to explore majors, but has considered math,
business and sports management. Elon’s housing is divided
into “neighborhoods”; Joe has already chosen his preferred
neighborhood, a historic area near the center of campus
activities. He is also looking forward to participating in the
intramural sport offerings.
Congratulations Seniors!
