Church of St. John the Evangelist Elora, Ontario 519.846.5911 www.stjohnselora.ca email:[email protected] Lent V Passion Sunday April 2, 2017 8:00 am Holy Eucharist (BCP) 9:00 am Contemporary Eucharist (BAS) 11:00 am Meditation in Word and Music for Passiontide Opening Responsory Thanks be to thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which thou has given us, for all the pains and insults which thou has borne for us. O most merciful Redeemer, Friend, and Brother, may we know thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly, now and for evermore. Processional Hymn 128 The royal banners forward go Walton Bidding Prayer Beloved in Christ, we are met together to remember the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. We shall hear in Holy Scripture how costly was the sacrifice Christ made on Calvary hill – for the sake of truth he bore universal reproach, far worse to bear than violence; for this was all his care, like Abraham before him, to stand approved in His Father’s sight though the world judge him perverse. But first let us pray for the Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church which he came to establish. Let us pray for the mission of the Church throughout the world that it may give faithful witness to the truth of the Gospel. And especially let us pray for ourselves and for this our parish that we may respond in heart and mind to the same Holy Gospel. Let us pray for peace in the world that a spirit of respect and reconciliation may grow among peoples everywhere. Let us pray for the poor, the persecuted, the sick, and afflicted; for refugees, prisoners, and all who risk their lives for the Gospel, that they may be relieved and protected. Let us pray for grace to amend our lives, and for the Holy Spirit to illumine our darkness, that we may continue our holy Lent and await Easter with high expectation. And finally, let us offer up these prayers and praises in the words which Christ himself has taught us: Our Father……. Lesson I: God pleads with Israel to acknowledge and confess her wickedness. read by Anthea Fisher Jeremiah 2.4-12 Canticle Lamentation Bairstow (1874-1946) How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people: how is she become as a widow! She that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces: how is she become tributary! She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers, she hath none to comfort her. The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn assembly: all her gates are desolate, and she herself is in bitterness. The Lord hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy. All they that go by clap their hands at her: they hiss, and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem saying, “Is this the city that men called the perfection of beauty; the joy of the whole earth?” Refrain: Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God. For these things I weep: mine eye, mine eye, runneth down with water. From on high hath the Lord sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath made me desolate and faint, all the day. I am become a derision to all my people: and their song all the day. Let him give his cheek to him that smiteth him: let him be filled full with reproach. Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by: behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. Remember mine affliction and my misery: the wormwood and the gall. Jerusalem... Remember O Lord, what is come upon us: behold and see our reproach. Turn Thou unto thee I Lord, and we shall be turned: renew our days as of old." It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are consum’d: because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul: therefore will I hope in him. O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul: thou hast redeemed my life. Jerusalem... Lesson II: A Saviour will come forth to bear the sins of the world. read by Donald Fisher Motet Isaiah 53.1-6 Ave Verum Corpus Mawby All hail, O true Body, of the blessed Virgin born, Which in anguish to redeem us did’st suffer upon the cross; From whose side, when pierced by spear, there came forth both water and blood: Be to us at our last hour the source of consolation. O loving, O holy, O Jesu, thou Son of Mary, O have mercy on me. Amen. Hymn Life high the cross Refrain Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred Name. Crucifer Peace was your plea and peace your loving theme: let peace be our passport, peace a living dream. Refrain Come, Christian people, sing your praises, shout! If we are silent, even stones cry out. Refrain Great is the cost of walking on this road, to follow and suffer with the Son of God. Refrain Jesus, you wept to see our human strife, teach us compassion for each human life. Refrain Worlds to be born and children yet to be, come, take up this song into eternity. Refrain Lesson III: Jesus foretells his death and resurrection. read by Pam Gradwell Motet Hear my prayer (Psalm 102.1) Hear my prayer O God, and let my crying come unto Thee. Purcell Lesson IV: Pilate investigates Jesus’ royal claims. read by Jim Bottoms Motet Libera Me and In Paradisum Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna, in die illa tremenda quando coeli movendi sunt et terra, dum veneris judicare saeculum per ignem. Tremens factus sum ego, et timeo dum discussio venerit, atque ventura ira. Dies illa, dies irae, calamitatis et miseriae, dies magna et amara valde. Requiem aeternam, dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Matthew 16.21-26 John 18.33-38 Fauré Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death, on that fearful day when the heavens are moved and the earth. when thou shalt come to judge the world through fire. I am made to tremble, and I fear, when the desolation shall come, and also the coming wrath. That day, the day of wrath, calamity, and misery, that terrible and exceedingly bitter day. Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. In paradisum deducant te angeli, in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem. Chorus angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere aeternam habeas requiem. Hymn May the angels lead you into paradise, may the martyrs receive you in your coming, and may they guide you into the holy city, Jerusalem. May the chorus of angels receive you and with Lazarus once poor may you have eternal rest. Eternal Lord of love, behold your church Eternal Lord of love, behold your church walking once more the pilgrim way of Lent, led by your cloud by day, by night your fire, moved by your love and toward your presence bent: far off yet here the goal of all desire. Fenn House So daily dying to the way of self, so daily living to your way of love, we walk the road, Lord Jesus, that you trod, knowing ourselves baptized into your death: so we are dead and live with you in God. If dead in you, so in you we arise, you the first born of all the faithful dead; and as through stony ground the green shoots break, glorious in spring time dress of leaf and flower, so in the Father’s glory shall we wake. Lesson V: God sent his Son to redeem the world not to condemn it read by Duncan Hossack John 3.14-21 Kontakion Give rest unto your servants where there is neither pain nor sorrow, neither sighing but life everlasting. For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, you are dust and to dust you shall return. Alleluia, Alleluia! Give rest to thy saints O Lord. For you God only are immortal, the creator and maker of all, and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to the earth we shall return. Lesson VI: God promises to raise us up to be with Christ read by Janet Hossack Offertory Hymn 510 Jesu, lover of my soul Lesson VII: The disciples of Jesus are called to share in his servant-hood read by Shirley Schonbacher Ephesians 2.4-10 Aberystwyth Matthew 20.17-28 Motet A Litany Leighton Drop, drop, slow tears, And bathe those beauteous feet Which brought from Heaven The news and Prince of Peace: Cease not, wet eyes, His mercy to entreat; To cry for vengeance Sin doth never cease. In your deep floods Drown all my faults and fears; Nor let His eye See sin, but through my tears. Last Prayers and Blessing Recessional The Litany Organ Voluntary Marshall Elevation from Messe pour les Couvents Couperin Notes from the organ bench: Our Lenten series from the French baroque concludes today with this music written to accompany one of the most solemn moments of a high mass.
