Dear Teen,
CHRISTpower is a weeklong service retreat that will take place in the Jefferson City area from July 9 - 15,
2017. The week-long experience is designed to make you more aware of the importance of service to those
in our community as part of our Christian life and to help you discern the future God has planned for you.
Helias Catholic High School will be the host site for the retreat. We will be using the high school facilities
for showers and overnight accommodations. During the day we will be working at various service sites in
the Jefferson City area (e.g., Salvation Army, Jefferson City Day Care, Cole County Residential Services,
Capital Projects, Samaritan Center, Villa Marie Skilled Nursing, and others). The evenings will allow time
to discuss our daily experiences and focus on the week’s theme.
A typical day’s agenda includes: awake at 7:00 am, go to chapel for prayer, breakfast, clean-up breakfast
area, pack lunches, head to the service site, return to Helias Catholic, free time, Mass, dinner, meditation
talk pertaining to the theme, discussions, lights out at 11:30 pm. Due to financial constraints for some
during these economic times, we have decided to keep the fee the same again this year. Cost for the week is
$125.
CHRISTpower begins on Sunday evening, July 9, at 7:00 pm. Arrival time at Helias Catholic is between
6:00 and 7:00 pm on Sunday evening. Wednesday evening (July 12) is Family Night when your families
(ONLY family members please – due to costs involved with the meal) are invited to join us for Mass,
dinner, and the evening’s events. Families also are invited to join in our closing Mass Saturday morning
(July 15) at 10:30 am.
Applicants must have completed 9th grade as a minimum, through 12th grade in 2017.
All applicants are expected to arrive on Sunday evening and remain throughout the week until closing
Mass on Saturday. The week is structured so each day builds on the preceding day’s experience.
Missing any portion is detrimental to the individual as well as the other participants and to the week’s
dynamics and it also complicates the planning process. Thus, for the Greater Good of the entire group,
only teens willing to commit to the full week should consider this year’s CHRISTpower.
CHRISTpower involves youth from parishes throughout our Diocese, but enrollment is limited. If you are
interested in participating in this opportunity to serve your community and grow in your faith, please fill
out ALL the CHRISTpower paperwork (including a copy of your medical insurance card) and
recommendation letter from your pastor. Applications will be accepted on a “first-come-first-to-serve”
basis, using the “postmark date”. Return ALL the paperwork, as well as the $125 fee or a NONREFUNDABLE deposit of $50, along with the recommendation letter from your pastor to hold your spot,

I hereby grant permission for nonprescription medication (such as Tylenol, throat lozenges, cough drops, calamine lotion) to be
given to my child, if deemed advisable by the Core Staff of CHRISTpower. I relieve CHRISTpower and / or Jefferson City
Diocese and its volunteers of all responsibility and consequences that may arise as a result of this treatment.
I will not hold CHRISTpower and / or the Diocese of Jefferson City and its volunteers liable in the event of injury. Further, I
agree to accept any and all financial responsibility as a result of scheduling medical treatment. My child agrees to abide by all
the rules and regulations stated by CHRISTpower and / or the Diocese of Jefferson City and all staff members representing

Acceptable clothes include sleeved crew neck t-shirts that cover your midriff. Shorts below
arms length or full-length jeans (without holes). Shirts, shorts, or jeans not fitting this
description will be replaced by CHRISTpower clothing in inventory. Include a pair of
jeans and one long sleeved t-shirt (for any intense weeding.)
One pair nice casual slacks
Shoes Needed:
• Old crummy tennis shoes (will be worn for one messy event only)
• Protective tennis shoes for service sites and outside of the gym
• Non-marking clean tennis shoes for gym use
• Flip-flops for shower (if desired)
• Sandals or casual shoes for other than service sites and gym
For Wednesday night - one t-shirt and pair of shorts or jeans which may be non-salvageable.
Any prescription medication if applicable. All RX will be kept in a safe place and
administered by the CHRISTpower Core team.

Modest swimsuit – for guys trunks, for girls a 1-piece, (if 2 piece, a dark colored T-shirt
must be worn over swim suit)
Camera (if you would like) – Mentors and Assistant Mentors need to bring camera for use at
Service Sites each day.

Please be prepared to confirm how many from your household (other than yourself) will be
attending Family Night – Wednesday July 12, mass, dinner and fun at St. Joseph Cathedral.
Your family may want to bring lawn chairs, to be more comfortable watching the games.

Any and all music or movie devices (e.g., radios, I-pods, DVD players, MP-3’s or portable CD
players, even CD’s – cassettes, vinyl records, eight track tapes) ….☺
Cell phones and pagers (if they are brought to the retreat you will be asked to turn them in.
They will be stored in a safe place until the end of the retreat.)
Illicit drugs, alcohol, anything perceived to be a weapon, or anything constituted to be harmful
for the rest of the retreatants.

Teen Expectations
Thank you for your “yes” to serve Christ. We are all called in many different ways to serve Christ and CHRISTpower is just one
excellent way to live out our baptism. Therefore, in order to make this week of service an awesome experience for everyone
involved, the following are expectations we, as coordinators, have for you.

Stereo equipment will be provided, so I agree to set an example for other teens by not bringing personal electronic
equipment including CD players, CDs, video games, MP3 players, etc. The coordinators have the final say.
I will not bring a cell phone or pager. If I bring my cell phone, I will give it to CHRISTpower staff for safe-keeping, to be
returned on Saturday. I understand there are phones at Host Site for emergency use and most coordinators and core
volunteers have cell phones if I need to call my parents.
Each day has been carefully planned with many different activities and getting started on time is necessary. I will be in the
Commons ready to go each day at 7:30 am and be a model to other teens by being on time to all activities.
I will dress appropriately at all times. For clarification, this includes shoes at all times in the cafeteria. Tank tops, spaghetti
strap shirts, shirts where the midriff shows, short shorts, and two-piece swim suits will NOT be allowed at any time during
CHRISTpower. For men, no muscle shirts (beaters). Shirts must be worn at all times. An exception is that two-piece
swimsuits will be allowed at the pool in which they must be covered by a dark T-shirt. If I question whether or not clothing
is appropriate, I will not bring it. I will get clarification from my Youth minister or CHRISTpower Leaders for any
questions I have.
Time for recreation, eating, serving, sharing, and sleeping has been planned for everyone, so I will work with that plan
during the week. I will comply with all curfew rules and stay in my own sleeping area. Quiet time begins at 11:15 pm, and
all teens must be in their sleeping area. “Lights Out” begins at 11:30 pm. This time is for sleeping and silence will be
observed by everyone, including Core volunteers and Coordinators.
I will come with an open heart and mind and a spirit of cooperation with others during the week.
I will respect the facilities we use and the sites we travel to because I understand respect is imperative. Respect is a large
part of this week because the facilities and help given us is all volunteer and given out of respect and love.
I acknowledge and accept that absolutely NO smoking, illegal drugs, alcohol, fireworks, weapons of any type, or profanity
are permitted during CHRISTpower. If over-the-counter or prescription drugs are brought, I will notify the leader and use
them appropriately.
To ensure everyone’s safety, I will stay with the group at all times at the service sites and within the boundaries of the Host
Site grounds. Any teen leaving the group or grounds without an adult will be subject to immediate dismissal from
CHRISTpower.
I will always present myself as a Christian wherever I go during the week.
CHRISTpower is not a time to stay in my own secure world; therefore, I will take advantage of meeting new people. I will
not spend all my time with old friends, but will take time to meet and make new friends.
If a problem arises, I will bring it the attention of a Team Leader, Adult Leader, Core member, or Coordinator immediately
so it can be addressed as soon as possible.
I understand any instances of lack of cooperation or insubordination will not be tolerated and will be subject to appropriate
discipline.
