Choctawhatchee High School Summer Reading
Incoming Freshmen: Class of 2019
All students at Choctawhatchee High School are required to complete summer reading
assignments prior to school in August. These assignments give students the preparation
they need to succeed during the school year and they afford teachers an opportunity to
gauge students’ progress. We look forward to the coming year of growth and success!
Requirements:
● Students must read TWO books from the grade level list and do TWO of the writing
assignments listed, one for each book. This assignment is for all levels of
Freshman English.
● DUE DATE: First Friday after school starts!

Writing Assignments
Please complete two different assignments listed below (one for each book):
❏ Invent another character to include in the novel.
● Describe how this character would react to the setting, conflict, and other characters. Be sure to
include this character’s background and how he/she is involved in the action.
❏ Create a book jacket.
● Make a new, creative cover for the novel. On the front inside flap, include a synopsis of the
novel. On the back inside flap include information about the author. On the back you should
include a critique of the novel that includes your opinion in a well-worded paragraph.
❏ Analyze 10 notable quotations from the chosen novel.
● Label and interpret the meaning of each quotation. How can each quotation be applied to the
overall theme of the novel? This should be written in blue/black ink or typed.
❏ Write an alternate resolution for the chosen novel.
● Using information from text, write an alternate ending to the novel. Your ending should
maintain the author’s original characters and setting, but should differ from the original
storyline. Your new ending should be 300-500 words in blue/black ink or typed.
❏ Make a comic strip of ten panels.
● Summarize the major events in the novel. Be sure to name your characters and include
indications of setting and conflict.

● Responses must be typed using MLA Formatting.
● Any quotations should be cited (properly) within your responses. After each quotation please include
the author’s last name and the page number in parentheses. For example: (Green 123).
