November 26

For the Week of November 23-26
We were very lucky to have the opportunity to
take our whole school to the Calgary
Philharmonic. Students had an amazing time
hearing stories by Beatrix Potter. Our school also
is excited to announce that we were selected to
receive a grant for $7 200.00 from the Calgary
Catholic Education Fund. These funds will be
used to purchase Literacy Place, a guided
reading series to use with our students.
So many learning opportunities
happened for our students this
week. We are excited to share
that:
Mrs. Wells’ Class
This week we have been
enjoying the story of
Rainbow Fish. In this
story Rainbow Fish
discovers that by sharing
his shiny beautiful scales
with his friends, it not
only
brings
them
happiness but it makes him happy as well. He
now has friends to play with and he experiences
the joy of seeing how happy they are with their
new shiny scales. The children then created their
own Rainbow Fish by coloring and cutting out a
template and then gluing on one special shiny tin
foil scale.
Mrs. Singer’s Class
As we prepare for the
season of Advent, the
Grade Ones are learning
about the ways we can
get our hearts and our
homes ready for Jesus.
Throughout the week the
students
worked
on
creating an Advent Tree
for home that has one
kind deed for each day of the month of
December. Students are asked to complete their
acts of kindness each day at home to open their
hearts to Jesus throughout the Advent Season.
At school, students are being asked to spread
kindness as we celebrate each week of Advent.
The Grade Ones are learning all the different
ways we prepare for Christmas in the community.
Mrs. Wallace’s Class
This week we learned
about snowflakes. We
learned how to cut six-sided
snowflakes out of paper
and wrote about the things
we
learned
about
snowflakes.
Then
we
taught our buddy to make
snowflakes just like we did. It was a terrific
learning experience to be the leaders with our
grade 6 buddies. Time was also spent on journal
writing and story writing. We shared our work with
each other learning about how to make our
writing better and more interesting to read. In the
gym, we are playing basketball and trying to
improve our skills. We tried to keep our
basketballs away from Mrs. Wallace in a game
called "Keep Away". If you were to walk by the
gym, you would hear us laughing and having fun
while
getting
plenty
of
exercise.
Mrs. Smith’s Class
Although we had a short week, we managed to
get plenty done. In math we learned about place
value and ways to represent numbers. In science
we looked at
different
instruments.
Students made
their
own
instruments
and
then
shared them with their peers. We had the
opportunity to go to Mount Royal University to see
and listen to the Calgary Philharmonic
Orchestra's presentation of Beatrice Potter Peter
Rabbit and Friends. Students enjoyed listening to
the instruments in the orchestra and listening to
the stories shared. With our buddies the
preschoolers we made chains to count down the
days until Christmas.
Ms. Nemeth’s Class
This was an amazing week.
We were fortunate to go to
the CPO performance of
Beatrix Potter at Mount
Royal
University.
The
students loved helping their
Kindergarten buddies be
safe on the bus ride and sit
still during the performance. The students all
came back to school and eagerly drew pictures or
wrote about the experience. We also worked on
multiplying single digit numbers, single digit and
two digit numbers as well as single digit and three
digit numbers. We will keep practicing this for the
rest of the year.
Mrs. Tapping & Wells’ Class
We have now moved onto learning about the
Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Lowlands Region of
Canada. We have discussed the many natural
resources found in this region and the use of the
St. Lawrence Seaway. In our Math classes we
are now working with larger numbers up to and
including millions. Students have started a
variety of different novel
studies. In Science we
are
learning
about
mixtures and solutions.
Do
you
know
the
difference between the
two if not ask your child.
Mr. Harich’s Class
We learned that it's important to reflect on our
experiences and remember key events in our
lives. Using a journal can be a fun way to capture
memories
and
thoughts,
so
we
made
our
own
journals
out
of
cardboard,
craft
paper, a rubber band,
a twig, a paper bag,
and some glue. On Wednesday, we went to Mt.
Royal University to see a performance of The
Tales of Beatrix Potter. The Calgary Philharmonic
Orchestra performed as soprano Michelle Todd
narrated stories of Jemima Puddleduck and Peter
Rabbit. The concert hall is a new building on
campus and we were among the first audiences
to experience it. In math, we continued to learn
different ways to represent numbers, and in social
studies we are searching for examples of the four
pillars of democracy in current events.
