Dragonborn Comes! Dovahkiin! by Jared Tomjack T o understand the vast game of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you must know about the types of creatures and provinces that exist within. The fantasy world of Skyrim is a vast region set in the northern part of old Tamriel. This region is known to be the home of the Nords, who are regular, everyday humans. Many different types of races in Skyrim, including Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Orcs, Argonians, Kajiit, and the Nords. Each of the races has distinct identifying features. When the game begins, an ongoing civil war is taking place between the Imperial Legion and the Stormcloak rebellion. When the player enters the game, they may pick sides if they so choose. The civil war started because the leader of the Stormcloaks, Ulfric Stormcloak, assassinated the High King of the Legion. Each player is enslaved by the Imperial Legion at the start of the game. You are about to be executed for trying to flee the country. As the executioner raises his axe, a dragon appears right over your head and starts attacking the city you are taken to. As soon as you escape, the player has to make a decision: either side with the Imperial Legion or the Stormcloaks for that period of time. After the player picks a side and escapes the city, he is told to talk to one of the smiths in Riverwood about the dragon attack. Riverwood is a small average town in the province of Whiterun. As soon as the player goes to Riverwood, a dragon attacks a fort just outside the city. The player’s goal is to defeat the dragon. Once he defeats it, the player absorbs the dragon’s soul. The player has the blood of a dragon, making them a Dragonborn. Dragonborns were once common to see in Skyrim, but after many had died, they started to decease until none were left. Their goal on earth is to defeat all dragons and their leader, Alduin. Alduin is compared as a god to the dragons, he is their leader, whether the others choose him or not. Alduin is evil. He wreaks havoc among the people of Skyrim. When the player starts getting well known, he gets a mysterious note. It says, “Meet me in Riverwood.” The player returns to Riverwood and meets one of the last Blades warriors. The Blades are a secret society of warriors who help kill dragons and are sworn to protect the Dragonborn. Are you ready to take the challenge of defeating Alduin and his companions? M any people are talking about the new game called Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Many elements in this game make it interesting. One of the factors that makes this game so great is the deity system that the creators of the game have created. The Elder Scrolls Company has made five games without including add-ons. Nine ‘divines’ are in the game, but 16 daedric princes also counteract the nine divines. The daedric princes are an immortal race similar to humans. While the nine divines tend to be pure and noble gods, the daedric princes happen to support darker elements. The nine divines start with Akatosh, the dragon king of the gods and time. He is considered the creator of the world. The god of life and death is named Arkay. Dibella is the goddess of beauty, and Mara is the goddess of love and compassion. The goddess of nature is Kynareth. Julianos is the god of wisdom and logic, and Stendarr is the god of mercy. The god of work and commerce is Zenithar, and my personal favorite divine is Talos, god of war and governance. The nine play a big role in the Elder Scrolls games because players can receive blessings from them. The daedric princes, however, have a large role as well. The 16 daedric princes rule their own plane. One daedric prince seems to play a large role in the Elder Scrolls games; Mehrunes Dagon is his name. He is the daedric prince of By the Nine! destruction and revolution. Azura is a daedric princess that a lot of people believe to be good. She is the daedric princess of dusk and dawn. Boethiah, however, is seen as evil. She is the princess of conspiracy, assassination, and treason. Clavicus Vile is the prince of negotiations. He makes a lot of deals based on tricky contracts and pacts. Hermaeus Mora is the daedric prince of fate. He appears as a spirit and is also known as the wretched abyss. Hircine is the prince of the hunt. Hunters and werewolves are loyal to him. Malacath is the prince of outcasts, and he is the keeper of sworn oaths and curses. Mephala is the princess of the mortals. She helps mortals and is often depicted as a spider. Meridia is the princess of living things. She is viewed as a good daedra in the Elder Scrolls. The prince of enslavement is Molag Bal. He harvests the souls of impure mortals. Namira is the princess of the ancient darkness. She is an old evil that many people fear. Nocturnal is the princess of the night and shadow. She watches over thieves and assassins. Peryite is the prince of tasks and pestilence. Sanguine is the prince of debauchery and dark pleasures. Sheogorath is the prince of madness. He corrupts the minds of mortals. Jyggalag is the prince of order. Last but not least is the princess Vaermina, the governess of dreams and nightmares. If one had to choose between the nine divines and the daedric princes, it would probably be wise to choose the nine divines because they wouldn’t stab a player in the back, literally. Hopefully you now understand a little more about the deity in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. May the nine bless and guide you. By: Brad Reynoldson
