Vice-President’s Message
President’s Message
I want to give a big congratulations to Lynn Bailey for winning the
2015 Perry Hampton Memorial Award and thank him for all of the
help he has given us over the years. I also want to thank Mark
Watson for hosting our picnic and opening up his beautiful property
for our members. We could not have asked for a better day. If you
missed it we took plenty of pictures and put them up on Flickr.
I've spent quite a bit of time over the past month building us up a
new website at longhorncorvette.com. I would love to get more
feedback on it. If you see anything missing or would like something
changed please send me a message. I'll be asking Mike Sears to enter
it for the NCCC website contest. I really think we have a good
chance of winning. We're now getting almost 200 hits on our site
each day, and that's not me clicking it 200 times either!
Y'all will miss me at the May business meeting. I'll be setting up at
the Moody Gardens Convention Center for the Corvettes Cruisin’
Galveston event. If y'all haven't heard of it we do a meet and greet on
Friday, June 3rd. I'll be hosting a table for LCC members to get y'all
registered and checked it quickly so you can start having fun
immediately. LCC will be meeting at the Pool Bar that night for a
small get together. Saturday we all go down to the Strand for our car
show. Corvette World is hosting the awards banquet and dinner at
Moody Gardens Saturday night. Their prices for car show
registration and dinner for 2 at the banquet is $100. They worked out
a negotiated rate with Moody Gardens for $200/night. They still have
around 200 out of 550 rooms available for this event. On Sunday, we
have a police escorted cruise along the Bluewater Highway where
you'll ride with Corvettes as far as the eye can see. It is an amazing
experience and I hope many of you can join us. You can get more
info and register at http://corvettescruisingalveston.com/
President ~ Lance Spracklen
The rains seem like they are finally going
away. Just in time for the Texas heat to
start dialing up the thermostat. I want to
give super kudos to the Perry Hampton
committee: Janice Brooker, Mike Sears,
Mike Cooper, and Marty Lege. They did a
fantastic job. I want to give huge thanks to
Mark Watson; he offered his beautiful
home in Blanco to host this year's picnic.
The big highlight of the picnic was to hear
Lynn Bailey's speech. He nearly had the
room in tears. Congratulations to you Mr.
Bailey you totally deserved to be the 2015
Perry Hampton recipient.
I need Mother's day cruise RSVP's by May
6th. Please email me at
[email protected] or
give me a call at 512-803-4993.
Vice-President ~ Tammy Spracklen
Call to action to all
LCC members.... Lance and I are currently
working on gathering items for the Operation
American Muscle goody bags. When you are
out and about at restaurants or other
businesses, please ask them if they have any
coupons or items they would donate for our
bags. We need at least 100, anything will be
helpful. Feel free to bring them to the meeting
or just call Tammy at 512-803-4993 to schedule
the ‘hand off’.
Howdy Herd,
Governor’s Message
A very heart felt congratulations to Lynn on receiving the Perry Hampton
award. As Tammy pointed out during her speech, we had a lot of good candidates this
year. It was a pleasure and an honor to serve on the Perry Hampton Committee this
year.
8 weeks until our autocross. Your help is needed and greatly appreciated.
Some of the areas are staging, tech inspection, registration, coordinating the

Meet the Members!
Mitch and Christy Altman
Gary and Susan Strader
Welcome to Mitch and Christy Altman. They have owned a
2016 Black Z06 for 1 month! Although not new to the Vette
obsession, they have had an ‘81 and an ‘84 before this new
beauty. When asked have Corvettes been a long time
obsession or a recent interest, they answered “Both, but
the 1984 put a bad taste in our mouth so it’s taken some
time to get back.” Sounds like there’s a story there! They
are looking forward to gaining new friendships and to
different activites the LCC provides. Other than cruising in
their Vette, Mitch and Christy love to travel, ride
motercycles, golf, and boat.
Let’s welcome Gary and Susan Strader with their
1969 Monaco Orange Coupe. (I drooled a little on
my keyboard when I saw the picture of that sweet
ride!) They are the new owners of this orange
delight and have had it less than a month. This is
not Gary’s 1st Corvette, however, he had a black
’84 C4. He says, “I’ve always had a passion and
love of the early c3 chrome bumper body style. It
might have something to do with growing up in
the 70s and being a big racing fan, but I knew my
dream corvette would be a chrome bumper with
flairs, side-pipes and aggressive race inspired
stance. Got lucky and found ours with almost
everything I wanted.” He plans for this one to be a
car show, meet-up, and event driver. “I work for
General Motors, so the occasional drive to work is
a must.” He is looking forward to meeting other
LCC members and hanging out with people with
the same appreciation of corvettes. Gary and
Susan live in Manor with our 7 year old son Gatlin.
Meet the Members!
Walt and Patti Conlin
Welcome Walt and Patti Conlin and their Limerock Green,
Z51, 3LT, Premier edition Vette. This is their very 1st
Corvette and they’ve had it for a whopping 2 weeks!!!
When asked what made them purchase this car, they said,
“we’re transitioning from motorcycling - Harley-Davidson.
We’ve had a long time love of Corvettes from back in the
60’s. We want the social aspect of the group and the joy of
rides, shows, and outings. This is a new adventure for us,
but we want the social aspect with other owners, doing
whatever that may be.” The #1 thing they want to get from
their LCC membership is to learn about the care of the car
and to go on rides and have social fun with fellow owners.
Walt is retired with Patti hopeful to be soon. They have
eighteen grandkids. They love riding . . . motorcycle and
car, being active, dancing, and going places.

Activities!!!
Wow, I had a lot of Corvette fun in April. I hope you all did too
between the rain drops. The new events calendar on the
website is awesome. If you noticed things like the monthly
shows are no longer on there. But don't worry, if you need to
know when the Cars and Coffee is at the Oasis or the monthly
meet up at Cabela’s, visit www.motortexas.com. Also, this is the
time of year that there are lots and lots of car shows, again the
Motor Texas website is the place to visit to get the scoop.
Also, there is a new transportation exhibit opening at the George
Bush Library in College Station. There are several car clubs
going out on the weekend of May 21 for the opening. If you are
not going to the Lone Star Classic and want to go to this, please
email me at [email protected]. I will wait on the
reviews before I schedule a cruise to see it.
Oh yeah, you asked for parades, you will get parades. Three in seven days from July 2 to July 9. Reason I tell you this
now is so you have plenty of time to order all the fancy stuff to out-do Forest and Amy Priest.

Corvette World’s Second Annual Corvettes Cruisin’
Galveston June 3rd-5th 2016
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR June 3rd, 4th and 5th
Just as last year, the show will be in the Galveston “Historic Strand District”. The “Strand” is a great venue with
partial cobblestone streets (no fears, they are Corvette friendly stones) and historic buildings from the 1800s. The
Strand National Historic Landmark District was the heart of Galveston in the late 1800s and early 1900s when its
star was bright and it was full of great promise, often referenced as both the “New York” and “Wall Street” of
Texas.
Many buildings still remain that were built in that era, built with all the best talents and materials that the society
of the time was capable of. Fine architects designed both the mansions along Broadway and the buildings in the
Strand area in styles inspired by the golden ages of the Greeks or the Victorians. A surprising number escaped the
devastation of the 1900 hurricane, and still remain.
The Strand is also the center of Mardi Gras celebrations, Dickens on the Strand festivities, and — of course — fine
dining, antiques, shopping, and art galleries.
It is going to be very high profile, great event moving forward into the future. Don’t miss signing up for this — our
second annual event — you won’t regret it!

Spare Tires and Your C3
Spare tires are one of those things most
of us don't think about until we
need it. And when we do it is usually
when we are stuck out in the middle
of nowhere on the unpaved shoulder
along-side of some narrow country road
in the dark of night. This story is a
lesson learned the hard way. The scope
of this article is it is for someone who
has never changed a spare, someone
who wants to know particular details
about it on a C3 or a tech junkie who
just can't read enough about C3s.
"you know, I really should get a new
spare", but then I'd forget again and
never do anything about it.
Well one night on the way home after a
cruise my luck ran out due to some
debris in the road and that ended up
costing me because the car had to be
flat-bedded back home.
My 1980 C3 came with a Good Year
"Polyspare" 195/80D15 clearly marked
"TEMPORARY USE ONLY" and
"MAX SPEED 50 MPH". This is an old
For those with newer Corvettes you may fiberglass belted radial tire that
corresponds to the Good Year
be off the hook here because some of
them don't have a spare tire because they "Polyglass" radial tires that were
common on my GM cars in the late
are spec'd from the factory to use run1970s and early 1980s. Mine came
flats. And if you don't have one and
you've changed to a different kind of tire mounted on a plain jane probably 7"
width typical 1970s/early 1980s GM
then you are just SOL if you get a
flat. Time to call the roadside assistance steel wheel.
or the motor club! Lucky for those of us
with a C3, Chevrolet included a spare
The tires that Chevy used on Corvettes
tire, jack and lug nut wrench.
in the C3 years varied over time. Early
Well, it is lucky IF your spare tire is
good! Like a lot of people, I
hadn't given a lot of thought to the spare
on my C3. It isn't a daily driver car so it
doesn't get a huge number of miles put
on it. I'm sure I am also not the only
person who drove around for literally
many years with the ORIGINAL spare
tire still sitting in that carrier in the
back. And I bet for maybe some people,
their carrier is empty and I've seen more
than a few C3s driving around with it
not there at all. Well, we all know that
tires go bad with time even if they are
never used. Rubber degrades with
exposure to air, other elements, and
especially UV. The C3 tire carrier being
under the car does a pretty good job of
protecting the spare from UV, but it is
open to air and the elements.
Knowing my spare was most likely 35
years old, I figured it would be
unlikely it would still hold air and I
knew I should get a new one. But I
never did. Sure, I'd occasionally think,
models used bias ply tires, then they
went to poly belted radials and then steel
belted radials. Firestone and Good Year
are the two most common, possibly the
only brands that came from the factory.
Don't throw out your old spare! Not
only is saving it for originality sake for
collectability a possibly good idea, but
I've seen them listed on eBay for pretty
substantial amounts if you don't care to
keep it. My original spare has obviously
never seen the pavement because it still
has its "whiskers"; those little bits of
rubber flash from the molding
process. Although very dirty and dusty I
was surprised that my original
spare was not hard as a rock like a lot of
old tires get. It is however kind of
misshapen to the contour of the spare
carrier and it would not have held air
even if I'd have happened to have a
compressor or pump with me because
the bead had long since separated from
the rim, which is common on tires that
sit for a long time.
The original spare tire is narrower than the
regular tires on a C3 which are normally (at
least for later C3s that came with radials)
245/70R15 for cars with Rally wheels and
255/60R15 for those with the factory
Kelsey-Hayes slotted alloy wheels). I
believe that the close equivalent in the old
tire sizes on earlier C3s would have been a
G60-15. I also believe the 'D' in the spare
tire size has something to do with it being a
limited use spare, and you won't normally
find a
xxx/xxD15 tire for sale. You can substitute
195/80R15 which is still
available although even it is not a common
size these days -- the tire store I got my new
spare from had to order me one from their
warehouse. The tread on the one I got was
obviously intended for light truck use (like
on a little 4cyl mini pickup) but that doesn't
matter much
for a spare. From what I've read a
205/75R15 or 225/70R15 should also
fit in the spare tire tub, possibly even a
235/70R15 although that may be pushing
it. Some of those other sizes may be easier
to find or cheaper. You don't need anything
fancy for a spare, mostly just
something that will hold air and get you
down the road a few miles.
The bad thing is once you've changed the
spare your full size regular tire may not
easily fit back into the spare carrier! If
you've got your luggage space full or you
have a convertible you may really be in
a bind! This is especially true if your tire is
dirty. It is a good idea to keep something
like a large trash bag in one of your C3
storage bins so you can keep your interior
from getting dirty.
Obviously the limited use and speed
restrictions on my new spare are not like the
old one because it is a regular street tire,
however it being so mis-sized from the rest
of the tires I would still recommend not
pushing it and just using it to get you to the
nearest convenient place you can get your
regular tire repaired or replaced.
Unsticking rim stuck on brake rotor:
Driving a car with an odd size spare is
no fun, even if this tire is not as bad as
the horrible "donut" spares a lot of cars
come with these days. You definitely
don't want to run two tires of vastly
different diameters on the back of a
positraction equipped car like a C3
because it can be hard on the clutch pack
in the differential.
Placement of jack:
Now we come to the important part -where to find the jack, lug wrench and
spare on your C3 and how to get the
spare tire out and change the tire. Those
who are familiar with changing tires
can skim over a lot of the basic general
stuff from here out.
Use jack stands if you have them. Make
sure the stands are on solid metal like
the frame rail. Things like springs,
control arms and other suspension
components are not a good place to put a
jack stand.
The spare tire tub, gas tank, exhaust
components or muffler are even worse.
How to find the jack:
The jack and lug wrench are found
under the right side storage bin behind
the passenger side in a C3. These bins
vary a little depending on whether the
car is a 1977E or earlier or 1977L or
newer, but the jack placement should be
similar. I don't have a convertible so
those of you with a 1968-1975
convertible I don't know what your
storage bins are like but I would assume
they are also close.
The jack and lug wrench are in the space
below the bin so after you open the lid
you have to lift the bin itself out. There
is a spring that holds down the jack and
lug wrench to keep them from rattling
around. After you disconnect that spring
from where it is hooked on the jack
you can lift them out.
How to remove the spare tire from its
carrier:
The lug wrench is also used to loosen
the swinging bolt which holds up the
spare tire tub. Once you have loosened
the bolt enough you can push the tire tub
back up and then swing the bolt out of
the way unlatching it and allowing the
tire tub to be lowered. Be careful doing
this because the spare tire and tub are
heavy and once unlatched they will drop
all
the way to the ground unless something
or someone is there to catch them.
There are indentations in the frame rail
in front of the rear tires and behind the
front tires where the cradle of the jack is
placed.
Apply parking break. Use wheel chocks
if you have them.
Loosening and tightening lug nuts:
Start by breaking one loose but don't
loosen it more than that, then go
to the opposite nut and break that one
loose, then the one opposite that and
work around until you get back
around. Loosen further each one a little
bit following the same pattern.
When putting back on, start first nut then
go opposite it, start that one and
continue around until you get back to the
first. Finger tighten that one then go to
the opposite one and finger tighten it and
continue around. Then use the wrench
to snug the first one down but not too
tight. Then follow the same opposite
pattern as previous steps. Then tighten
the first one and lean into it good to
torque it down, following the pattern
once again. Re-check around the pattern
to make sure all of the nuts are torqued
solid.
If you use an air impact wrench for
removing and installing it is best not to
do the final tightening with the power
tool or the wheel may be very difficult to
remove by hand later.
If you can't lift the wheel off when all the
lug nuts are removed you may have to kick
it with the back of your foot to break it
loose. If it hasn't been off the car in a long
time it may be held in place by
corrosion. This is especially true with alloy
wheels because of the reaction between the
aluminum of the wheel and the iron of the
brake rotor.
Well, that's just about everything I know
about spare tires!
Thanks,

LCC Racing Team
The original members of the
Longhorn Corvette Club
established a “Fun and Friendly”
Racing Team, back in the mid - late
1970’s, called “The Turkey Trouncer
Racing Team”. Several team
members ranked in the Top 10,
during the late 1970’s, with Dave
Doig taking top National Honors
once, during that time.
The “Turkey Trouncer RT”
continued
to
compete
in the
SW
Region of
the
NCCC,
during
the ’80’s
and 90’s
and faded
as many of the original competitors
moved away and had family
considerations.
There has been a resurgence of
interest in the last couple of years,
with Mike Sears, who finished 2nd
in the SW Region Championship
Series one year.

How do I get that great LCC swag???
You may have seen members wearing new shirts with LCC logos on them. Whether it
was a nice pink ball cap with an embroidered logo or a twist on a retro Corvette Tshirt. You didn't miss out on a big order of merch. Lance Spracklen and Kelley
Knight-Heins set up vendors that you can order your shirts, hats, coasters, and just
about anything that can embroidered or digitally printed on.
There are two companies that provide these services. Queensboro does embroidery.
They only embroider the LCC logo on bags to dress shirts. Visit:
http://longhorncorvette.qbstores.com/home to see what they have to offer. Kelley had
to go through several of the polos to find colors that were really close to the color of
their Vettes.
The second company Big Frog Custom T-Shirts and More in Round Rock can "silk screen" the logo and anything else
you want on t-shirts, towels, etc. The shirts are digitally printed and not traditional silk screen. Kelley has left on file the
graphics needed to print the 4-color logo or you can use the one-color logo. Because things are digitally printed they can't
print on 4-color on dark colored shirts. The staff there will more than be happy to mock up a design you have in
mind. Lee absolutely loved the 8th wedding anniversary gift from Kelley. The ink on the
digitally printed shirts doesn’t fade either. The big
thing to know about Big Frog is that your order is
normally ready within 24 hours from the time you
approve the artwork. If you want to order from Big
Frog, tell them that the LCC logo is under Kelley
Knight's name. Kelley has worked with April over
the last few months so you can always ask for her to
assist you. Big Frog's website
is: http://www.bigfrog.com/ or you can stop by their
shop at 2051 Gattis School Rd, Round Rock, TX
