International organizations like OSCE, the United Nations, and the European Union are planning international operations with an innovative key element: the involvement of civil experts, also from the non-governmental level. The Summer School Civil Peace Corps and International Cooperation is willing to understand this process. For this reason, it focuses on peacebuilding and on civil intervention in conflict areas within the framework of international cooperation, presenting the cutting-edges theories and practises in these fields. This School helps to fill the gap on conflict sensitivity rethinking international cooperation and integrating it with the peacebuilding capacities in the light of the do not harm concept. The School also analyzes the main ongoing non-governmental operations for peace and how they can enrich the Institutional level. The participants have the opportunity to learn and develop their knowledge on the following topics: • peacebuilding theories and practices; • relationship among civil intervention in conflict areas, human development, humanitarian intervention, and the promotion of human rights; • experiences of civil interventions for peace institutionalized or promoted by national governments; • EU and OSCE cutting-edges practices in the field of peace intervention; • experiences of civil intervention for peace realized by non-governmental organizations. Target group and prerequisites for admission Undergraduate, graduate, PhD students, and practioneers in the field of international cooperation, human rights, and peacebuilding. Teachers Instructors will include Full Professors and Researchers from the University of Bologna, international top-level academics, professional trainers, and both experienced practitioners and policy-makers in the field of peacebuilding and international cooperation. The Director of the summer school is Professor Gustavo Gozzi, Full Professor from the University of Bologna, Faculty of Political Science. Credits and evaluation Students attending the School will be granted 3 CFU. General Information The course will last 5 days. Every day there will be 5 hours of class, more other activities (seminars, movies, documentaries, practical training, and a workshop on international opportunities in the fields of peacebuilding and international cooperation). Classes will be in English. Every participant will receive a certificate of attendance. Participants will be selected on the basis of their curricula. A good level of English is a mandatory prerequisite for admission. Late applications may be considered, depending on the number and eligibility of the applications already received. Confirmation will be given via e-mail (applicants shall make sure that an e-mail address is provided) by June 16, 2009. Information about local possibilities will be provided to requesting participants. Students facilities and resources University computer facilities, libraries and study areas will be available for participants to the Summer School. Social program Social initiatives will be organized for participants, including a guided tour of Ravenna and a final social dinner. Local excursions can be suggested by the tutor who may also organize dinners, nights out and other social activities. Location The Ravenna Campus represents a point of excellence of the University of Bologna, specialising in the study of the preservation, protection and valorisation of cultural heritage, human rights and international cooperation, in particular with countries from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. Located just a few kilometres from the beaches, and one hour by train to Bologna, the city offers varied cultural events and pleasant opportunities for excursions into the Po Delta nature reserve and into the “pineta” (umbrella pinewoods) of Classe and San Vitale.
