Ever wondered what all of the icons on your phone mean? Us too!
Here’s a quick list of some of the most common icons and what they mean for your phone’s
speed and connectivity. Keep in mind that if you are bouncing between 3G, 4G, EDGE and
WiFi, you may be “kicked out” of the CU1 app and may need to log in again.
iPhone Icon Guide
Displays your current cell signal and strength. The more bars the better. If you are out
of service, the bars will be replaced with “No Service.”
Airplane mode means that all wireless capabilities – including Bluetooth – are disabled.
You cannot make or receive calls or access the Internet.
When you see this icon, it means that you can browse the Internet at 3G speeds.
The EDGE icon means you are not connected to your carrier’s 3G network, but the
slower EDGE network.
This means you are accessing a carrier’s GPRS or 1xRTT network. This will show in
place of the 3G icon and even though you can connect to the Internet, the speed will be
slower.
The WiFi icon shows when you are connected to a WiFi network. Similar to the signal
status icon, the more bars the better.

Network Speed Notes:

GPRS mobile networks will allow you to connect to the Internet, but can only function
at about 20kb/s.
EDGE networks function at about 60 kb/s.
3G connections have a speed of about 385 kb/s – and are therefore the faster
connection for your phone.
4G connections are significantly faster (up to three times faster) than 3G, but it is
harder to find a stable 4G network in Alaska – which may cause your phone to
bounce between connections.
A Wi-Fi connection is a wired Internet connection that is connected to a wireless
router (like at your house, or a CU1 branch) and is much faster than a 3G
connection.
