God of Wisdom,
I thank you for the knowledge gained
through my learning experiences this year.
Let your Holy Spirit be with me as I prepare for exams,
guiding my studies and giving me insight
so that I can perform to the best of my ability.
Grant me the strength to handle the pressure of these days
and the confidence to feel secure in my knowledge,
that I put the effort into the challenges that lie ahead.
St John Baptist de la Salle – Pray for us.
Venerable Catherine McAuley – Pray for us.
Live Jesus in our Hearts – Forever.
Our Year 12s have just completed their HSC Exams and the junior years will
now be in a period of exams over the next few weeks. I guess it begs the
question – what is the point of all these examinations, especially if it may
cause stress for our juniors?
One leading education expert, John Hattie of the University of Melbourne,
believes the purpose of most assessments is not to “…measure precisely
how much students know at a given moment”. Rather, it’s to “…provide
information to teachers and school leaders about the impact of their teaching
on students, so that educators have the best information possible about how
they need to change and adapt”.
Assessments are powerful tools for improving teaching and learning as they
provide timely, informative reports directly related to what teachers have
taught. These assessments can either be formative or summative. So what is
the difference between formative and summative assessments?
A simple explanation could be: When the cook tastes the soup, it is
formative; when the guests taste the soup, it is summative. Many students
are now facing their summative assessments, the examinations that will
show their accumulated knowledge, skills and learning mastery.
The results of some of these examinations will be crucial for the students as
it will help them understand their own progress in learning – what they can
do; what they cannot yet do; where to go next.
This is valuable information for parents too. Examination results give you a
snapshot of where your children are at this moment. We should use these
results, not for blame or recriminations, but rather to discuss with them the
effort that they put into their work and how did that effort get them to where
they are at this point.
Taking this a step further, ask where this may lead them for next year and
what they need to do to achieve better results or to maintain their steady
progress. We wish all our students every effort in their exams ahead.

Sadness within our school community.
It is with a heavy heart that we ask our school community to keep in their prayers, the tragedy that has
affected two of our families this week. We are mourning the sudden and unexpected death of two young
beautiful men whose families now grieve for them.
We share their loss and hope that these families can take comfort in their memories of these wonderful young
men, remembering their wonderful lives.
Our Brothers in faith, we entrust you to God Who created you.
May you return to the One Who formed you from the dust of this earth.
May Christ who was crucified for you bring you freedom and peace.
May Christ, the Son of God, Who died for you take you into His kingdom.
May Christ, the Good Shepherd, give you a place within His flock.
May you see your Redeemer face to face and enjoy the sight of God forever. Amen
Eternal Rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.
Amen.

CAPA 2015
Congratulations to all staff and students who have participated in Visual Arts and Drama subjects and all associated co
curricula activities. This year we welcomed two new staff members Mrs Bronwyn Jackson and Mrs Sarah Bailey. The
expertise of these teachers has been appreciated by students and professionally by their colleagues. Ms Liz Gallwey has
been on leave this year but we will warmly welcome her return to the department in 2016.
This year, we introduced Photography as a subject in Stages 5 and 6. This has proven to be a very popular subject
particularly in Stage 5. Students recently participated in an excursion to extend their photography skills. Staff have
collaborated to develop and enhance the Visual Arts programs and assessments this year. I would particularly like to
thanks Mrs Liz Sarks for her work in this area.
The talented Year 12 have produced some excellent works demonstrating sound and diverse technical skills under the
guidance of Mr Les Quick and Mrs Liz Sarks. Best wishes to the class for their HSC results.
Our Art students are exhibiting works in the Orange Regional Gallery’s Festival of Student Art to be held during Term 4.
Congratulations to those students whose work has been selected for this exhibition.
The Drama classes have participated in various performance projects including The Stage West Festival of One Act Plays
in which the Year 11 class were successful in achieving three awards. The Year 10 Drama class participated in the Orange
Eisteddfod and were successful in the original scripts and improvisation sections. Recently, both the Year 9 and 10
classes performed excerpts from Australian scripts for parents and friends at a school performance evening.
Thank you to all staff and students who have contributed to the Creative and Performing Arts faculty during 2016.
ORANGE THEATRE COMPANY
STAGE WEST FESTIVAL OF ONE ACT PLAYS.
During July, the Year 11 Drama class participated in the 2015 Stage West One Act Plays. The group competed against
other theatre companies from Gulgong, Bathurst and Orange. Despite their youth, the group received three of the
seven awards including Best New Work, and the Best Supporting Female and Male Actors
Awards. The play “Holly’s Horror” was written and directed by Hannah Mobbs and Amelia
Bennetts. The group consisted of Eloise Beath, Amelia Bennetts, Jacob Cunningham, Timothy
Dalton, Jade Fogarty, James Gartrell, Lauren Mitchell, Hannah Mobbs, Robi Tag and Taylor
Theobald.

LEARNING ENRICHMENT.
This year saw the development of a Learning Enrichment Committee designed to explore ideas and offer opportunities
within the school for learning enrichment. The committee consists of Mrs Judy Tyson, Mrs Liz Sarks, Mrs Bec Begg, Mrs
Trish Moran and Mrs Robyn Stevens. This committee has considered areas where enrichment could be offered within
the school and in 2016 will provide further opportunities in a more flexible school structure.
This year, five teams entered in the Tournament of Minds competition under the expert guidance of Mrs Judy Tyson
who worked with the teams and Mr Winston West, Mrs Sandra Austin and Mr Luke Nobes to develop the skills of the
students in the creative thinking required for spontaneous and long term challenges. Two teams were successful at
Regional level and went on to represent the school and the region at State level. They were the Social Science team
consisting of Ruby Capell, Lucas Charlton, Matthew Pell, Georgie Haydon, Tom Desborough, Amelia Bland and Harry
Cummings and The Maths Engineering team of Gabriel Colla, Cezar Dihel, Noah Bartlett, Kurt Stephens, Aaron Rodgers,
Aimee Banks and Melissa Higgins. Two staff members, Mrs Denise Taylor and Ms Nicole Lasker were judges at both
tournaments. Congratulations to all those involved, especially Mrs Tyson and the parents who transported their children
to both Bathurst and Sydney.
During Term 4 a Creative Challenge afternoon (pictures below) was held for Year 8. This is a competition based on Houses
and enables students to work in groups with new students and to also develop their aptitude for creative challenges and
problem solving.
Students across the
school will have an
opportunity to
participate in film
making workshops as
part of the Villages of
the Hearts Film Project
sponsored by Orange
City Council. These workshops provide a unique opportunity for student’s work to be part of the new Orange Museum’s
archive.
Thank you very much to the committee members who have been willing to participate in this group during 2015 and we
look forward to expanding the opportunities for our students in 2016.
