Read review Complex Genetics and Implications for Psychiatry Most diseases run in families— but that is not enough to conclude that genetic factors are involved, since infectious diseases or nongenetic traits such as malnutrition or attendance of medical school also run in families. Twin and adoption studies discriminate between familiality due to genetic or due to environmental influences (geneticists mean with the latter any nongenetic factor, including chance and measurement error). Adoption studies have shown that the risk of an adoptee of having a psychiatric disorder depends more significantly on the mental health of the biological parent than on that of the adoptive parent one gene, since only one gene acts in each family. Read review The Genetic Architecture of Complex Traits Workshop Report and Recommendations Most genetic traits of interest in populations of humans and other organisms are determined by many factors, including genetic and environmental components, which interact in often unpredictable ways. For such complex traits, the whole is not only greater than the sum of its parts, it may be different from the sum of its parts. Thus, complex traits have a genetic architecture that consists of all of the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the trait, as well as their magnitude and their interactions. The following recommendations are intended to increase the rate of progress and improve the quality of research on the analysis of complex traits. This new hotel school is just across the street from our meeting rooms at the Fogelman Center on the University of Memphis campus. Each room has a small sitting room, kitchenette, a bedroom with two double-sized beds and a bathroom. Comfortable and new. We expect the price to be approximately US$ 90 per night; a good deal given the level of amenities. Most of you will probably want to reserve two nights (May 15 and May 16). The Fogelman Center is about a 10 minute taxi cab ride from downtown Memphis and about a 15 minutes from the airport. ACTION: To reserve a room, please email Pam Letbetter before April 10 at [email protected]. Pam phone number is (901) 448-7018. Pam can also help you arrange for shared rooms. Or you can probably take care of this on your own my reviewing the list of attendees registered at the http://www.complextrait.org web site. If you wish to make your own reservations at a different hotel please do so within the next few weeks. Our meeting intentionally overlaps the Memphis in May festival period and rooms will be tight over the week and weekends. ABSTRACTS: We would appreciate abstracts from all of you attending the CTC meeting, especially if you would like an opportunity to present results, ideas, or plans in the morning sessions as catalysts for afternoon discussion. I have attached a sample abstract. Please use this general format. Get the File Deadline for receipt of abstracts is March 29th, 2002. The abstracts will be put on the CTC web site. Abstracts can be as long or short as you want. If you would like to include figures and citations, that is fine. Figures should be saved as GIF or JPEG images. Entire preprints are welcome. Abstracts will be put on the www.complextrait.org web site Related Sites Vanderbilt Medical Center Biomedical research at Vanderbilt has long been recognized for its contributions to the advancement of medicine. Thus, the ability to use mean phenotypic values from inbred strains to map likely genomic locations of quantita-tive high number of negative results relative to positive results predicted across the genome. POWERPOINT FILES FOR THE CTC WEB SITE: We would like those of you who give PowerPoint presentation to leave the CTC a copy of your presentation for inclusion on the web site. This will enable members of the CTC who are unable to attend to get a better idea of research directions and plans. PowerPoint files can be edited after presentation to make corrections.PowerPoint files were made available for the GeneLogic Workshop on Affymetrix array analysis and they are extremely useful (See http://statwww.berkeley.edu/users/terry/zarray/Affy/GL_Workshop/ genelogic2001.html) 3. CTC WEB LIBRARY:We would like to assemble a small electronic library of recent paper by CTC members on mouse genetics, complex trait analysis, QTL mapping, and related work.We would particularly welcome preprints and unpublished position papers. If you have such work: PLEASE SEND PREPRINTS AS PDF FILES (preferred) or send us MS Word or Web addresses of your work to Arthur Centeno at [email protected]. Abstract Reminder--due by March 29 ABSTRACTS: We would appreciate abstracts from all of you who would like an opportunity to present results, ideas, or plans as catalysts for afternoon discussion.
