Cleveland Central Catholic (CCC) has formed one of the best partnerships with Cornerstone to offer support to our grieving students. In 2011, a number of our students lost a parent and it was quite overwhelming to help them with their grief and serve the needs of the other students. Most times when a child loses a parent, it impacts all areas of life including school, finances, and residency; not to mention the mental and emotional effects. We are now able to focus primarily on meeting the student’s school needs while Cornerstone can focus on helping each student heal emotionally. The convenience of having their school based therapy is ideal for our families. Most have challenges with transportation and/or time due to work obligations, but by having Cornerstone counselors come into the school, it ensures that students will receive the help they need. School-based counseling may be the only opportunity for a student to receive client centered care and Cornerstone makes that happen. The flexibility of the therapists who serve at our school has been amazing. They work diligently with the families to guarantee a continuum of care and offer flexible meeting schedules for the students. Some of the services they have provided include individual/group counseling, retreats and staff training. We are thankful to Cornerstone for providing these unique services to CCC. 6 cornerstone of hope | 2013 annual report Ms. Missy Frei Ms. Tiffany French Ms. Louise Friedl Ms. Darlene Frimel Mr. Don Fritz Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Michael & Michelle Fritz Mr. and Mrs. Gerard S. Cornerstone of Hope has been a haven of hope for me personally and professionally for the past seven years. In my role as a Vet Center Counselor, Cornerstone has facilitated our Vietnam Veteran’s Wives Support Group and they engaged in an amazing partnership with Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (T.A.P.S.) who serve bereaved members of military families. The growing awareness of the need to address the invisible battle of grief has brought a sea of calm to many souls across our area. Bereavement can be lonely and learning a new normal in one’s life is quite a journey. Through the programs at Cornerstone, I have learned to give myself a time out from the world of work, and balance self-care. Sometimes, we are so busy taking care of others that we forget that in order to take good care of them, we have to take care of ourselves. Cornerstone has increased my awareness of the need for balance while keeping me informed of new developments in the bereavement and self-care fields. Personally, I also searched for a new sense of self after the loss of my daughter in 2009. The staff are true friends and professionals who help with the journey of bereavement and loss. I am forever grateful to the Cornerstone of Hope staff, interns and volunteers, along with the Tripodi family, for sharing their story and helping all of us grow. God Bless You ALL! •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• W •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Mr. and Mrs. Clair Waid Waite & Son Funeral Home Mr. Dan Waken Ms. Cindy Walker Mr. Dorian Waller Mr. and Mrs. Dean S. Mr. Lucarelli sadly passed away at the age of 69, and he will be forever remembered for his amazing generosity and support to Cornerstone and to numerous Northeast Ohio charities. Sam’s true gift was his giving heart. For those that knew and loved Sam, you realized immediately that his passion to serve others, especially children, was paramount. Sam’s deep faith and care for those less fortunate fueled his unselfish spirit. His relationship with Cornerstone began even before our inception in 2003, and was continued after his death by the Lucarelli family by designating Cornerstone as the recipient of his memorial contributions. Mr. Lucarelli was the first to pledge a major gift when our permanent center was constructed. His most recent gift of $100,000 was used toward Lisa’s Butterfly Treehouse, in memory of Lisa Kurtz Luciano. As a result, Cornerstone brought national attention to our mission by being featured on Animal Planet’s hit television series “Treehouse Masters”. Sam was also presented with Cornerstone of Hope’s 2013 Champion of Hope award at our Decade of Hope Gala. It was our time to celebrate a tremendous man committed to making a difference in Cleveland and changing the lives of grieving individuals and families who walk through our doors. His legacy will provide support and hope for many in the years to come. 14 cornerstone of hope | 2012 annual report In memory of Nick Luca Mr. and Mrs. Frank Luca In memory of Loretta Lucarelli Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lucarelli Mr. and Mrs. Dino Lucarelli In memory of Mario and Kay Lucarelli Ms. Nancy Johnson In memory of Sam Lucarelli Air Power Dynamics LLC Boya Belasic Mr. Rick Bell Mr. Sam Bontempo Gregory & Katherine Brzytwa Gerald & Maryann Bucceri Mr. and Mrs. Angelo & Sally Bucci Mrs. Barbara Cameratta Mr. and Mrs. Joseph & Cheryl Carrino Cassaro & Cassaro Co. World renowned treehouse builder Pete Nelson and his team from Nelson Treehouse and Supply were the architects behind this newly created therapeutic space in the trees. Pete and his crew are the stars of Animal Planet’s hit television series Treehouse Masters. Cornerstone of Hope was selected by Animal Planet to be the first non-profit featured on an episode of the show. The eighteen day construction timeline ended with a community unveiling on November 17, 2013. Although the experience was filled with total excitement from start to finish, the actual episode did not capture the true meaning behind the treehouse which is known as Lisa’s Butterfly Treehouse! Did we just celebrate our 11th Annual Gala? It seems as if it were only yesterday that we wrapped up our ten year anniversary Gala. No words can describe how humbled we are each year by the amazing generosity of our guests and the hundreds of volunteers, store owners, business leaders and supporters who made this entire evening possible. We appreciate all that you did to make our Annual Gala a spectacular event. One resounding word that we kept hearing from our guests was COURAGE! The three amazing stories that were shared during the video presentation were absolutely courageous. Dina and Bob Parmertor opened their hearts to the community after losing their son, Danny, in the Chardon school tragedy, and two Cleveland Central Catholic students, Nikkayla and Camarie, both expressed their transformative school support group experience. Each story had common themes of suffering, comfort, compassion and ultimately hope. Their witness was not only important for the community to hear, but also validated Cornerstone’s core value of excellence because we only use master’s level professionals to lead every one of our support groups. In 2013, we facilitated 78 support groups that served 812 unique individuals. When Lisa Kurtz Luciano: a business leader, philanthropist, dedicated wife, mother of eight and mentor, lost her battle to cancer, she left a surprise gift to Cornerstone from her family’s foundation. Lisa knowing that her diagnosis was fatal wanted to do something that would ultimately help her own children and other youth who experience the death of a parent. Lisa was all about the kids and her enormous, compassionate and generous heart was always focused on others and never herself. No words can describe how much she is missed…no words. In addition to this gift, the late Mr. Sam Lucarelli donated $100,000 at last year’s Gala to do something special in honor and in memory Lisa Kurtz Luciano. A swing set was the first thought, but that wasn’t special enough to capture the spirit of these two amazing souls. The idea of a treehouse was captivating! What child wouldn’t find joy and excitement in a magical treehouse? If you are interested in viewing a rerun of the episode titled “Wild Butterfly Escape”, visit animalplanet.com for future times. If you want to experience Lisa’s Butterfly Treehouse in person, we are hosting a community open house on Sunday, May 18, TABLE OF CONTENTS 2014 from 1:00 – 4:00pm followed Page 3 Gala by a family rosary at 4:30 pm to offer our prayer intentions for all those Page 4 Education and Training who have been affected by cancer. Page 5 Camp Page 6-7 Cleveland Updates Page 8-9 Groups and Programs Page 10-11 Columbus Updates The cameras have come and gone; however, Lisa’s Butterfly Treehouse will stand forever in loving memory of this amazing woman! Lisa and Sam, we promise to always keep your spirit of generosity alive by serving others. Another core value of Cornerstone of Hope is compassion. Our 2014 Champion of Hope recipient, Frank Scarpa, certainly understands what compassion is all about. Mr. Scarpa is the managing partner of New York Life’s northern Ohio general office. Frank leads a team of over 160 agents. By company standard, when they deliver a death benefit to a family, their obligation is complete; however, New York Life goes above and beyond the minimalistic criteria of complete. Under Frank’s leadership, his team becomes involved on a routine basis to refer grieving families to our center, to volunteer at for annual Camp Erin program, and to host a signature fundraising event–A Taste of Hope–which benefits our programs directly. Since 2010, New York Life Foundation, key staff and local agents have contributed over $250,000 to help serve grieving children and their families in the greater Columbus and Cleveland communities. Gala Sponsors: Proudly Supporting Cornerstone of Hope’s 9th annual 10th 11th Annual We welcomed a new mistress of ceremonies to the stage, Brooke Taylor, of 95.5 the Fish Morning show. Brooke talked about her own experience of losing her Dad and how she continually relies on God’s grace to provide healing through this life experience. Guest of honor Bernie Kosar mingled with the crowd, signed autographs, took pictures and even agreed to go out to dinner with live auction winning bidders. Familiar friends are always in attendance at The Gala: OSU legend and ESPN analyst Robert Smith hosted the evening along with Brooke, Cleveland’s favorite sons Troy Smith and Teddy Ginn Jr. attended along with another Buckeye and Browns legend Tom Cousineau. Local news anchors, Denise Dufala, Dawn Kendrick, Denise and Tony Zarella accompanied radio personalities Jimmy Malone and Chip Kullik to fill the room with local celebrities. Speaking of “filling the room”…we cannot express how grateful we are for the pure kindness of the local companies and friends who purchased tables to support our grief support work. Seven hundred guests attended the night that featured fantastic prizes and auction items: a get-a-way cruise, an Italian vacation, dining experiences, unique gift items, specialty raffles and local art. By the end of the night, Cornerstone raised $370,000 toward our $1.2 million annual operating budget. Wow! Cornerstone of Hope is truly blessed. This is one of Cornerstone of Hope’s busiest seasons for fundraising, but with each event, it is a chance to reconnect with old friends and people who have supported us since the beginning along with meeting new faces. We are truly blessed to have the support of the Northeastern and Central Ohio communities. I am thankful that our summer programs and camps went well and provided a safe place for grieving children and teens to come and share their feelings while meeting other campers who have also had a loss. It always amazes me how much God continues to provide for us with each new challenge we face. This summer, we had several golf outings where all of the proceeds were donated to Cornerstone. For the families who TABLE OF CONTENTS created these events in honor of their Page 3 Camp Recap loved ones, choosing Cornerstone shows their dedication to helping Page 4 Education and Training other grieving families. These outings brought in more than $92,000 for Page 5 Cleveland Updates Cornerstone’s grief support programs! Page 6-7 Upcoming Programs Page 8-9 Groups & Workshops Page 10-11 2 Columbus Updates We hope you will attend one of our upcoming events this fall so we can share how thankful we are to have you as part of the Cornerstone family! This year was Cornerstone of Hope’s most successful camp season yet! We had a record number of campers apply to attend our three summer camps. Camp Cornerstone explored Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the places you’ll go,” Camp Heroes put on a performance and Camp Erin allowed campers to get to know one another better over a weekend-long experience. Each one offers a unique experience and an opportunity for children and teens to be able to make friends with others their own age who have also had a loss, along with memorializing their loved one while sharing their feelings in a safe environment. Overall, we had more than 180 campers this year, and we wanted to share some of their amazing accomplishments this summer. Camp Cornerstone, a day camp held at our Independence office for ages 6-12, focused on grief activities and discussions in the morning. After lunch, they went on fun field trips to the Great Lakes Science Center, the Metroparks Parma Watershed, and a behind the scenes tour of Quicken Loans Arena. One of their projects included groups making a collaborative Seuss world project to depict the feelings of a grief journey and the emotions they face. The week wrapped up with a balloon release in memory of their loved one. (cont. from page 2) from Ancient Path and Without Words Movement provided guidance to the campers. Their show included a background decorated by the campers with hopeful words and splatter art along with music with drums made from recycled garbage cans and maracas. The focus of the performance was on how every person works through their loss in their own way. Each camper had an integral part in making the presentation a success, and even with only three days to practice, they performed at a professional level! In addition to their show, each camper participated in art therapy projects that expressed how they feel after their loss and learned how people in countries like Mexico, Uganda, Japan and Australia grieve when they lose a loved one. Our final camp, Camp Erin, created and funded in part by the Moyer Foundation, is an overnight 3 day camp just north of Columbus. These campers, ages 8-17, participated in the traditional camp experience along with grief discussions, memorial activities and art therapy. Campers receive a “comfy item” each year to help welcome them to camp, and this year, it was a necklace with their loved one’s picture placed on it. For many campers, this is their first time away from home, so this item helps them feel like their loved one is with them on this new journey. On the Saturday of camp, they decorated their own wish lantern that they released that night. Many of the campers choose to write messages to their loved one so that when they were sent up in the sky, they knew they are thinking of them. These messages are a touching reminder of what brings the campers together; the loss of their mom or dad, losing a sibling at a young age, or even their friend from school who has passed away. However, reading their hopeful letters with words like, “I hope you are having fun in heaven, you’re the best friend I had!” or “Dad, I have so much to look forward to, I wish you could be here to see me…I went to prom this year! I know you can see everything in heaven, but I still miss you like crazy!” is inspiring knowing they are able to look forward to seeing their loved ones in heaven. At the end of the weekend, many campers wished it could be longer because they did not want to leave their new friends. Cornerstone of Hope’s camps have provided an important resource to many children and teens for more than six years, and some of the previous campers now come back and attend as big buddies. We are dedicated to providing these camps free of cost to families, because we believe that they should not worry about being able to afford these programs for their child. It costs approximately $150,000 to run these three camps over one summer. If you are interested in learning how you can support these camps by donating items or by making a donation, please contact Cornerstone at 216.524.4673 or visit our website. Camp Heroes brought together chidlren ages 8-17 for a day camp at the Family Ministry Center on the west side of Cleveland. The campers were challenged to create a production which explored grief around the world, and ended the week with a performance for friends and family. After losing his father to cancer, Alex was inspired to turn his loss into purpose and share how his father made and kept promises by distributing promise cards. You write your promise on the card, then give it to the person to whom you are making the promise. When it is fulfilled, you receive the card back as a reminder that you are a person of your word. His talk will focus how making promises after a loss can help create goals in moving forward on your grief journey.
