t’s western civilization’s ultimate art form, and essential to any
city with a cultural tradition. Adding to the experience of grand opera
are the buildings themselves, including their architecture, appointments, and
crucially, their acoustics. Consider legendary opera houses in Florence,
Milan, Venice, Paris, London, and Chicago’s two opera houses, the
Auditorium and Civic Opera House. Jerome M. O’Connor will pay special
attention to his 2016 tour of St. Petersburg’s new $700 million Mariinsky
Theatre. Hint: it’s spectacular.

aron Burr is, of course, the antagonist of the musical Hamilton. “Fallen
Founder” and “Dark Star of the Founding” are names that have been
given to Burr in the two centuries since his tumultuous life. He was a man who
seemed to have plots and intrigues circling around him. Joyce Haworth will
recount Burr’s life after the famous duel with Alexander Hamilton in 1804,
when he sought to overthrow a government in the southwest and set up his
own rule.

A
rt always suffers from theft and destruction during war. Hitler was
very aware of the influence that the arts had on how people thought,
so the arts had to be controlled. An obsessive-compulsive about all his ideas,
he was very specific about the sculpture, paintings, dance, and music that
would be tolerated and collected by the Reich and the “degenerative” art that
had to be destroyed. Ann Leslie takes you down the Nazi’s path of destruction
as she describes how they stole and destroyed some of the world’s most
precious artwork.
NATIVE AMERICAN ARTS, ANTIQUITIES & STORYTELLING
Tuesday, April 4 - 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
T
here are cultures in which art is not separated from daily life. Native
American art provides deep meaning about life. Artifacts including
Lakota beadwork, Navajo rugs, Pueblo pottery, Pipestone pipes, and Zuni
animal fetishes tell us stories that teach us about life, the universe, and our
place in creation. Here, art is functional and ordinary objects become things
of beauty and passion that carry stories. Ann Leslie has a deep connection
that will be exhibited in her show-and-tell collection of artifacts of various
Native American tribes.
