YMCA IDITA-SWIM!
Are you looking for a little extra motivation to
keep moving through those winter months until
spring returns again?
The Idita-Splash FREE Program can help!
Splash your way through 1035 minutes or laps
while doing any water activity here at your
YMCA, between
March 6th and May 14th (Mother’s Day), 2017,
and become an Idita-Swim Finisher!
YMCA Idita-swim is based on the famous Iditarod sled-dog race. The race follows what was
originally a mail-supply route and in 1925 became known as a lifesaving highway upon which
medical supplies were delivered to children in Nome by a string of mushers and their dogs.
The Iditarod is sometimes called "The Last Great Race on Earth." Every year, it begins in
Anchorage during the first weekend in March (this year it will be March 4th). Each team of 12 to
16 dogs covers the distance to Nome in approximately 9 to 17 days, and approximately 1035
miles depending on the year.
Your YMCA Idita-Swim program wants to promote physical fitness through aquatics in the spirit
of the Last Great Race. We will use minutes in our water aerobics classes/individual water
workouts and laps swam/jogged/walked in the pool to represent the miles of the Iditarod Trail
Sled Dog Race.
Every member of the YMCA may sign up for one of the two tracks:
Water Aerobics Track: Every water aerobics class (no matter the length) that you participate
in or 45 minute water workout, will equal a 45 minute credit towards your total. Be named
a Big Dog by achieving level 810 and you will receive an Idita-Swim T-shirt and be named
a Lead Dog by completing a full Idita-Swim at level 1035+.
Lap Swim (which includes water walking/jogging) Track: Every length (equals 25 meters) that
you swim/jog/walk, will equal a 1 mile credit towards your total. Be named a Big Dog by
achieving level 810 and you will receive an Idita-Swim T-shirt and be named a Lead Dog by
completing a full Idita-Swim at level 1035+.
You can sign up for this FREE program through April 9th. Record keeping will start March 6th and
will end on May 14th. Once you have registered at the front desk you will be given a record sheet
to place in a recording notebook, located in the guard office in the pool area.
