DEFINITIONS
Context:
The circumstances in which artists work, eg personal, social, historical, cultural,
geographical, environmental, economic, political, religious, artistic, gender, class,
and philosophical.
Movement:
A group who adopt a similar approach to style or ideology, eg Mannerism, Pop,
Die Brücke, Cubism, Constructivism, and Feminism.

EITHER: QUESTION ONE: FOURTEENTH-CENTURY ITALIAN PAINTING
(a)
During the fourteenth century, several wealthy Italian families paid for the decoration of family
chapels such as the Arena, Bardi, and Pazzi chapels.
Select and name a family chapel, and describe the circumstances surrounding the decoration
of the chapel. Then describe evidence of these circumstances in TWO named scenes from the
chapel.
(b)
Explain the relationships between the circumstances surrounding the decoration of the chapel and
the two scenes. Evaluate the extent to which the decoration of private chapels had a significant
impact on the development of fourteenth-century Italian art.
OR: QUESTION TWO: FIFTEENTH-CENTURY ITALIAN PAINTING
(a)
Select and name TWO fifteenth-century Italian paintings related to military events or
circumstances*. Describe the military events or circumstances, and then describe evidence of
these contexts in the two paintings.
(b)
Explain the relationships between your selected paintings and their contexts. Evaluate the extent to
which depictions of military events or circumstances reflected contemporary social and / or religious
concerns.
*Note: Military events and circumstances could include battle scenes, soldiers, figures associated with war, etc.
OR: QUESTION THREE: ITALIAN RENAISSANCE SCULPTURE
(a)
Select and name TWO sculptures of a figure or group of figures by Michelangelo from different
times in his career. Describe an aspect of context for each sculpture, and then describe evidence
of that aspect of context in each of your selected sculptures.
(b)
Explain the relationships between your selected sculptures and their contexts. Evaluate the extent
to which these contexts had a significant impact on the treatment of the figure in each sculpture.
OR: QUESTION FOUR: HIGH RENAISSANCE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANNERISM
(a)
Describe the circumstances in Rome that encouraged the development of the High Renaissance
style, and then describe evidence of these circumstances in TWO named High Renaissance art
works.
(b)
Explain the relationships between these circumstances and your selected art works. Evaluate the
extent to which circumstances in Rome had a significant impact on the development of the High
Renaissance style of art.
OR: QUESTION FIVE: VENETIAN PAINTING
(a)
Describe the unique nature of Venice that encouraged the development of a Venetian style of art,
and then describe evidence of this context in TWO named art works.
(b)
Explain the relationships between your selected art works and their contexts. Evaluate the extent
to which the unique nature of Venice had a significant impact on the development of the Venetian
style of art.

OR: QUESTION SIX: NORTHERN RENAISSANCE ART
(a)
Describe the economic circumstances that encouraged the development of Northern Renaissance
art, and then describe evidence of these circumstances in TWO named Northern Renaissance art
works.
(b)
Explain the relationships between these circumstances and your selected paintings. Evaluate the
extent to which these economic circumstances were a significant factor in the development of the
rich detail characteristic of Northern Renaissance art.
OR: QUESTION SEVEN: CUBISM AND ABSTRACTION 1900–1930
(a)
Select and name TWO art works by Robert and / or Sonia Delaunay that demonstrate their interest
in modern technological change. Describe their interest in modern technology, and then describe
evidence of this context in your selected art works.
(b)
Explain the relationships between your selected art works and the Delaunays’ interest in modern
technological change. Evaluate the extent to which this interest in modern technological change
contributed to the development of Orphism.
