Dr. Carolyn Hull Anderson
The Baltimore City Community College
Board of Trustees has announced the
appointment of Dr. Carolyn Hull Anderson
as the College’s new interim president! Dr.
Anderson‘s extensive professional experience
in higher education includes nearly 30 years
of service at BCCC, beginning in 1970.
Having most recently served as an associate
professor at her alma mater, Morgan State
University, Dr. Anderson has also held the
positions of executive vice president and
acting president at Cincinnati State Technical
and Community College, and as dean of
academic services at Broome Community
College in Binghamton, N.Y.
Dr. Anderson began her career at BCCC as a
full-time faculty member, attaining the rank
of full professor. During her tenure she rose
to the positions of assistant to the associate
dean of arts and science; chair of English,
Speech, Foreign Languages, Art and Music;
and director of the academic development
program.
“The Board is pleased to appoint as interim
president someone who knows the College
so well and has already demonstrated
remarkable dedication through years of
service to BCCC students,” stated Dr.
Rosemary Gillett-Karam, Board of Trustees
chair.
Dr. Anderson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree
from Morgan State University; a Master of
Science and a Master of Liberal Arts degree
from the Johns Hopkins University; and a
doctorate in adult and community college
education from North Carolina State
University at Raleigh.
“I am grateful to the Board of Trustees for
their faith in my ability to work with faculty,
staff and students to move the College
forward,” stated Dr. Anderson.

Thank You!
Dean Scott Olden,
Interim Associate
Dean Dorothy
Holley, Dr. Peggy
Bradford and the
entire Nursing
Department Faculty
for developing an
evening/weekend
nursing program to address the
longstanding needs of students and
employers. The program will go a long
way toward helping students who want
to become nurses but cannot quit their
day jobs while also helping to fill a
critical workforce shortage.
Thanks to Vice Presidents
Deidre Soileau and
Dr. Peggy Bradford,
and professors
Dr. Diana Zilberman,
and Dr. Brad Lyman,
for their implementation
and vision for the automation of
the Student
Evaluation
Process. Seventy
percent of
our students
provided
feedback to help
us assess our
institutional needs.
All Dental Hygiene Faculty:
Professor Annette Russell,
coordinator of the program; and
Professors Grace Simmons,
Dr. Edna Street-Jones, Roslyn
Chester, Terry Doty and Wendy
Gilden. Together, they provide a very
necessary and valuable public health
service in our community. Area seniors
come to the Liberty Campus Dental
Hygiene Clinic for free cleanings, oral
cancer exams and dental x-rays during
“Senior Week.” In the event they cannot
make it, dental services are provided all
year long for only $20. Special thanks ,
also, to Professor Roslyn Chester

and all Dental Hygiene faculty
for sponsoring their annual student
exhibits. BCCC Dental Hygiene
students always do a stellar job of
exhibiting and presenting on health
topics that are timely, relevant and
interesting to their peers.
In the Science Department:
Dr. Adewale Laditan;
Dr. Malathi
Radhakrishnan;
Dr. Kathleen
Berlyn and
Dr. Anil Malaki,
and Professors
Wendweson Fikire;
Richard Danforth;
Sarah Spence;
and Thomas Langley (as well
as staff)…for hosting the recent
Science Fair
which included
more than 50
science projects
and exhibits!
The students
were very
impressive and
knowledgeable
on the topics
they presented,
for instance, how regular table salt can
generate enough energy to illuminate a
light bulb; how the body reacts to HIV
treatments; and the varying densities
of liquids. Several competitions were
featured as part of the event including
one in which greeting cards were
decorated with natural plants and
flowers. The Science Fair took up the
entire third floor of the Life Sciences
Building and, as always, was “standing
room only.” Area high school students
attended and also participated in
the Fair. The Baltimore BioWorks
company and several book publishers
sponsored the event.
Dr. Richard
Bucher;
Dr. Diana
Zilberman;
Professors Ann
Frazier and
Michael Kaye;
and Dr. Malathi
Radhakrishnan,
Faculty
Exchange
Committee, for
hosting, “Shifting
Perspective:
Seeing the World
Through a Different Person’s Eyes,” an
interactive program exploring the
cultural perspectives of people in
four different scenarios. Small groups
fostered discussion and learning.
One student expressed she will
never view homelessness the same;
another shared that, because of her
conversation with persons from other
countries, she just might venture
out of her Baltimore City comfort
zone. The activity illuminated how
individual students’ experiences can
be a powerful tool to enhance cultural
awareness and promote group learning.
Thanks to Ms. Leslie Perkins and
Ms. Tracey
Roseborough
Holmes, the fall
Phi Theta Kappa
(PTK) induction
was a huge success.
PTK is the national
honor society for two-year colleges
and President Shelley Payne (recently
sworn in as our new student Board of
Trustees member) shared some of her
personal journeys as a non-traditionalage student who, in addition to school,
works full time and cares for her mom
and disabled brother. Former PTK
President Lewis Evans was the guest
speaker. More than 50 students were
inducted.
Dr. Katana Hall for her lecture, as
part of the BCCC
Library and
Bookstore Lecture
Series, on being a
playwright – and for
her role as a Talkback
panel speaker for
Coppin State University’s “From the
Mississippi Delta” production.
Professor Carlton Leverette on his
recent retrospective,
also part of the
BCCC Library and
Bookstore Lecture
Series, on his works
and creative life as
a nationally known
ceramicist.
Ms. Veena
Radhakrishnan, Web Specialist,
on her presentation to the Maryland
Distance Learning
Association
(MDLA), “Using
Prezi Right: A
Creative Alternative
to Traditional
Presentations.” The
event was sponsored by MDLA and
focused on tools and strategies for
improving online learning.
Ms. Kursten
Pickup, Refugee
Youth Project
(RYP) Coordinator,
and Ms. Moira
Fratantuono,
Volunteer Specialist,
for the RYP fall
fundraising gala
Nov. 30 replete with
international foods and the unveiling
of that program’s first student-authored
cookbook, RYP Cooks. The book was
created by students from the RYP
Upton site and features authentic
recipes from 18 different countries. A
total of $5,200 was raised at the gala.
‘Not bad for one night’s work!’
