NVC | JAPANESE-AMERICAN MEMORIAL WALL FORM FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS • What do the bricks look like? The bricks are 3-inch high and 10-inch long. They are made out of Absolute Black Polished Granite with white lettering and look very similar to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. • Do you have to be a member of the Nisei Veterans Committee or the NVC Foundation to donate a brick? No. Any Japanese American who was interned or who has served in the military can be memorialized on a brick. • Do you have to live in Washington to donate a brick? No. People from 31 different states and two foreign countries have already donated bricks. • Can there be a brick for an individual in both the Internee and Veterans Section? Yes. If the person was in camp and also served in the military they can have a brick in the internee section and another in the veteran section. In fact, many individuals have bricks in both sections. • Can those currently in the military have a brick? Yes. We have several bricks honoring those currently in the military. The brick will have the year they entered the service and when they leave the military we will have the year engraved. • Can the rank of someone who served in the military be listed on their brick? Because many relatives of deceased veterans do not know the rank of the service member the Memorial Design Committee decided not to list rank on bricks to make them all consistent. • How will the brinks be organized on the Memorial? You will receive a schedule to observe the installation of your brick. If you are unable to attend the installation, they will be installed by the NVC Foundation. • Will I be able to install the bricks? We hope to allow people to install their bricks again. However, since new bricks will be placed at a higher level those installing bricks will have to climb on scaffolding and our insurance company may have liability concerns. • Is this Memorial Wall only for WW II Veterans? No. We have bricks honoring Veterans who served in the Spanish American War, World War I, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Gulf War, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and during peace time. • Can new bricks be placed next to our family’s bricks already on the Memorial? We cannot remove other people’s bricks from the memorial so your new bricks can be placed next to family members. • Is this Memorial only for Nisei? No. Any Japanese American who was interned or who has served in the military can be honored with a brick. • How can I find out who bricks have been ordered for?
