Everyone has their favourite toy. Even your teachers! Have you ever considered what kind of toys your teachers played with when they were young and how different they are from the ones that are popular today? Let’s travel back in time and see what toys and gadgets were popular a long, long time ago! Miss Lam Wing Sum Miss Lau Ho Yan Like most little girls, Miss Lau was fond of dolls and her favourite toy was a mini dollhouse called Polly Pocket. It was small enough to fit into a little girl’s purse. As she was the only girl in her family, with no sisters to play with, she would create her own dialogue using her dolls in different roles, all together in the mini dollhouse. Polly Pocket dollhouses are no longer on the market, but Miss Lau hopes that one day they will make a comeback and then she can build a new collection of them. Miss Lam’s favourite toy was her Barbie doll given to her by her mum when she was five years old. She would not only style her hair, but also wash it. Gosh! She was totally shocked when her Barbie's neck suddenly broke and her head fell off, going straight down the sink hole. Looking at the now deformed body of her Barbie doll, she cried her eyes out and kept asking her mum what had happened and if Barbie's hair would ever grow back! Then, her mum the hero saved the day, rescuing Barbie’s head and putting the pieces back together again with the use of some tape. Mr Liu Wang Chun Overjoyed, Mr Liu was given GameBoy Colour along with two of his favourite games Pokemon and Super Mario - when he was a little boy. As you would expect, he played with his new toy all day long. His happiness was short lived, however, as his new toy was confiscated by his mum after only 2 months of enjoyment. When the GameBoy was eventually freed from imprisonment, it was broken and could never be played again! .Mr Chan Ching Chak Lying down with his toy cars on the floor, moving them around and crashing them into each other was how Mr Chan had fun when he was young. Due to his poor exam results, his mother did what she needed to do to teach her son a lesson. One unguarded night, she threw away all those innocent little cars as punishment for his poor school showing. Although it was really heartbreaking at that time, it didn't stop Mr Chan from developing his interest and started a new collection when he grew up. A few years have gone by already and every time I think back to my childhood, I miss my primary school friends a lot. My best friend was Brian; we met when we were only in P.1. He was the first friend I made in my primary school life. He was kind and friendly and he looked like my brother - with short, black hair and glasses. He sat beside me in class and lived in my neighbourhood as well. After we left primary school, he emigrated to England with his family. Of course we miss each other and are still in contact, often chatting online. When I was a kid, I loved watching Sesame Street. Elmo was my childhood buddy and my favorite character in this cartoon series. When I wasn't playing with Elmo, I spent a lot of time playing with my toy cars, a very different hobby from most typical girls who enjoyed playing with dolls. As for snacks, my taste was also different to most other kids who fancied chocolate or chips: my favorite snack was Haw Flakes. Haw Flakes are thin sweetened hawthorn cakes that are just mouth-watering! 4C Chan Ching Yi English Department 3A Chang Bo Hay Yan Chai Hospital Wong Wha San Secondary School “Enjoy Yourself Tonight” was a famous variety show in Hong Kong.
