Types of Mixtures
An Online Treasure Hunt for Third Year High School (Science)
Introduction
After the chemistry class of Rizie, she decided to buy some snacks with her best friend. She bought an orange juice for
her and halo-halo for her best friend. Both of them knew that these are examples of mixtures. But then, they observed that the
juice has only one liquid phase while the halo-halo has liquid and solid phases.
Mixture has two different types, the homogeneous and the heterogeneous mixture. Orange juice is an example of
homogeneous mixture while the halo-halo is an example of heterogeneous mixture. What is a homogeneous mixture? What is
a heterogeneous mixture? We will find out in this online treasure hunt. After working on this activity, you should be able to
recognize mixtures around you and appreciate their value.
The activity is simple. Working in groups of three or four, answer the questions below by reading the websites listed (under
“Resources”). Read the questions, click on the website URLS, and read the websites carefully. Write down your answers
neatly and be ready to discuss them in class. Afterwards, answer the Big Question.

Big Question
Look around you (your house, school, market, etc.) and identify 10 mixtures you can find. Identify the type of each
mixture whether it is homogeneous or heterogeneous. Include the number of phases of each mixture you observed and think
how you will separate its components.
Write your answer in a table form like the one below.

This is still a group work (the same group that did the online treasure hunt). Make sure everyone in your group will
contribute ideas. Write you answer to the Big Question on the same sheet of paper where you wrote your answers to the
small questions. Submit the paper (with the names of the group members) at the end of the period.
