Is fracking fluid safe?
A NEW report says that the liquid used to get gas and oil out of rocks isn’t as safe as the oil companies
claim.
As the world’s oil and gas reserves run out, companies have recently started using a method called fracking, or hydraulic
fracturing. This involves pumping liquid into cracks in rocks to open them up and release any oil and gas inside them. Fracking
has been blamed for pollution, but the oil companies insist that it is safe.
Scientists gave a presentation last week at a meeting of the
American Chemical Society. They found that around 190 different
substances are used in the fluid that is pumped into rocks. Eight
of these could be dangerous, because they are toxic to mammals.
