BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD
PRESIDENT ANNIE’S DIARY
Peter Stevens, a former member of
our Club(1993 -1998) and son of
John and Audrey Steven, graced the
microphone to talk about home
insurance. He was introduced by
Chairman Jon Oppy. Peter outlined
the genesis of the market since the
1970’s to the present day and
regaled us with stories of attitudinal
responses for claim denials in the
early period, quoting phrases from
senior insurance executive such as
“have you tried hard enough to deny
this claim” as being modus operandi.
We learnt that of the approximately
100 companies selling product in the
Australian market that they fall
under the umbrella of 5 major
corporations. A profit margin of
around 4% of premium would
appear to be accepted standard with
massive differentials in coverage
offered. The industry amounts to
around $9bn in Australia with around
$5bn paid in claims annually, $3.6bn
in insurable events (natural
disasters. The industry by its very
nature is a “risk taking business”
unfortunately around 40% of
purchasers (us) have not correctly
assessed the value of cover.
Purchase price is not a determinant
of replacement cost.
Peter told a personal tale of a large
claim resulting from inundation
which can be defined in a myriad of
ways from an insurance perspective.
Cheapest is not the best and cost
factors that determine value for
money are linked to definitions. We
do not necessarily need the highest
policy priced policy for protection but
realistic assessment by policy holders
of the value of contents is intrinsic to
claim assessment. Interestingly Peter
cited the boost to the economy that
flows from something like a major
storm event which injects money
directly into the economy with
employment generation and
purchase of replacement goods and
trade skills. A necessary evil with
Peter’s emphasis on the need to
understand your policy and the
relationship you may have with the
provider and a broker if you have
one. A higher cost will probably
save you money in the long run.
Asked to nominate three things that
have changed since his membership
of the Club in 1998 Peter referred to
the alcohol at meetings, Neil Hookey
having worn “big boy” pants then as
opposed to the shorts he wore
tonight and the fact that Bern
Connell had ten fingers then rather
than the nine he sports now.
Thanks to Jon for chairing the
meeting.
We are honoured to welcome World
President Nominee Ian Risely to next
week’s meeting. Ian is speaking on
“Rotary – The Way Forward”. This is
another great opportunity for our
partners to enjoy an evening of
fellowship. And to build our
knowledge of Rotary. Catering is by
“Spitting Image”. Responses for
next week’s meeting MUST be
notified to Nick Pane not Alan
Lorenzini by no later than 12 noon
Monday November 23rd.

donations, unwrapped to any
meeting up to and including
December 9th. St Vincent de Paul
Society from St Dominic Parish in
Camberwell will distribute the gifts
on behalf of our Club. Our

Kew Golf Club please ensure you
complete the attendance sheet. This
is preceded by the Children’s
Christmas Party at “Billy Lids” play
centre (Father Christmas in
attendance) in Hawthorn on Dec
12th 3.30pm to 6pm. Notifications
to Karen Nolan of children’s numbers
– we are limited to 50.
Great to see Geoff Heath and Gary
Goldsmith back. After a few incidents
Don Jago had an appointment at
Cabrini last Friday afternoon, really
thought just for a review of his
prescriptions. On the spot was put
into the ICU/CCU, two hours later
was in theatre and now the recipient
of a shiny new pacemaker. Don
cannot speak highly enough of the
expert care and attention at Cabrini.
Home now, all OK, however confined
to barracks for a week, enjoying
more expert care. Please keep
Pheng Ng, who is in intensive care in
the Austin – latest report is a slight
improvement, in an induced coma, in
your thoughts and prayers. So too
Val Heyburn who has suffered
another stroke.

A POEM BY CHARLIE CHAPLIN WRITTEN ON HIS 70TH BIRTHDAY
When I started loving myself
I understood that I’m always and at
any given opportunity
in the right place at the right time.
And I understood that all that happens
is right –
from then on I could be calm.
Today I know: It’s called TRUST.
and could see that everything around
me was a request to grow.
Today I know: It’s called MATURITY.
When I started loving myself
I stopped depriving myself of my free
time
and stopped sketching further
magnificent projects for the future.
Today I only do what’s fun and joy for
me,
what I love and what makes my heart
laugh,
in my own way and in my tempo.
Today I know: it’s called HONESTY.
When I started to love myself I
understood how much it can offend
somebody
When I tried to force my desires on
this person,
even though I knew the time is not
right and the person was not ready for
it,
When I started loving myself
and even though this person was me. I escaped from all what wasn’t healthy
Today I know: It’s called LETTING GO for me,
from dishes, people, things, situations
When I started loving myself
and from everything pulling me down
I could recognize that emotional pain
and away from myself.
and grief
In the beginning I called it "healthy
are just warnings for me to not live
egoism”,
against my own truth.
but today I know: it’s called SELFToday I know: It’s
LOVE.
called AUTHENTICALLY BEING.
When I started loving myself
When I started loving myself
I stopped wanting to be always right
I stopped longing for another life
thus I’ve been less wrong.
Today I’ve recognized: it’s
called HUMBLENESS.
When I started loving myself
I refused to live further in the past
and worry about my future.
Now I live only at this moment where
EVERYTHING takes place,
like this I live every day and I call
it CONSCIOUSNESS.
When I started loving myself
I recognized, that my thinking
can make me miserable and sick.
When I requested for my heart forces,
my mind got an important partner.
Today I call this connection HEART
WISDOM.
We do not need to fear further
discussions,
conflicts and problems with ourselves
and others
since even stars
sometimes bang on
each other
and create new worlds.
Today I know: THIS IS
LIFE!
MOST FILLING FOODS FOR YOUR DIET
If you are trying to lose weight, the
first thing you have to consider is
whether the food you are eating is
keeping you full enough for a while.
This way, you wouldn't need to snack
so often. Another thing you would
need to consider is whether what you
are eating has a high calorie count. As
you might know, the amount
of calories in food do not necessarily
have to do with portion size - certain
foods contain less calories than
others (and these are not only fruit, as
you may believe).
Here's a list of the top 8 foods that are
proven to be the most filling, while
providing a low calorie count. The
items are listed in order of the amount
of calories per 100g of food, with the
last one having the least amount of
calories.
Eggs are not only very filling, they're
also packed with nutrients, proteins,
and 9 amino acids that are essential
for our body. Eating these for
breakfast (including the yolk, which is
very nutritious) is said to be ideal, as
they are more filling than a bagel and
result in less calorie intake in the 36
hours after.
Tip: Take a sliced egg with added salt
and pepper and sprinkled paprika for
the ultimate filling food snack or
breakfast serving.
3. Figs
1. Popcorn
Calories: 375 per 100g
Of course, the healthiest popcorn is
not the one you get at the movie
theatre - it's the more natural, airpopped, butter-free one. Because it
has quite a large surface area, and
contains a lot of fibre, popcorn will fill
you up more than a packet potato
chips. If you want a filling, quick and
healthy snack, this should be at the
top of your list.
Tip: Sprinkle your popcorn with some
red pepper before eating - this is said
to help make you feel even fuller.
2. Eggs
Calories: 155 per 100g
Calories: 107 per 100g
Feel like eating something sweet that
is filling at the same time? Snack on
figs! This fruit is a fantastic source of
fibre, which is dense and filling,
meaning that it will keep hunger at
bay for longer. It offers natural
sweetness, together with so many
other nutrients that compliment a
healthy diet.
5. Potatoes
Calories: 77 per 100g
Although potatoes are often shunned
because of their high levels of starch,
they are actually fantastically filling ,
and are a great source of
vitamins, fibre and other nutrients.
Compared to other foods like wholewheat bread and brown rice, people
used as subjects in a study, claimed
that they felt fuller for longer after
eating boiled potatoes.
Tip: Eat them boiled, grilled, or baked,
but not fried - and don't forget to
leave the skin on for even more
fullness!
6. Greek yogurt
4. Cottage cheese
Calories: 59 per 100g
Greek yogurt is considered the single
best food proven for weight loss,
according to Harvard researchers, as
people who have tried it said to have
seen very effective results. It is widely
preferred over regular yogurt because

7 NATURAL REMEDIES USING HONEY
The medicinal properties of
honey were first recognized
by the ancient Egyptians,
and has since been used as
a natural home remedy
solution. Honey contains
powerful anti-inflammatory
components that help
strengthen your immune
system and protect you
from diseases. Honey can
soothe an upset stomach,
prevent fatigue, repair sore
muscles, treat toothaches,
get rid of fungus in athlete's
foot, and even aid in weight
loss. Suffice it to say, you
should always have a jar of
honey in your closet. Here
are 7 natural home
remedies you can prepare
using a dash of honey.
1. Ginger and Honey: Treating
Upset Stomach
Strain when it’s finished if you’d like.
Alternatively, you can also add
chopped ginger root to herbal tea.
2. Homemade Cinnamon
Mouthwash: Bad Breath
Cinnamon is widely used to calm
upset stomach and treat other
gastrointestinal disorders. Cinnamon
also contains the carminative herb,
which is used as a flavouring agent in
the production of toothpaste and
mouthwash to kill off bacteria. What
You Will Need:
2 lemons
½ tablespoon of cinnamon
½ - 1 teaspoon baking soda
1 ½ teaspoons of honey
1 cup of warm water
A bottle or jar with a tight fitting lid
Directions:
Add ½ tablespoon of cinnamon into a
bottle or jar with a tight fitting lid.
Add the juice of the 2 freshly squeezed
lemons along with 1½ teaspoons of
honey.
If you’d like you can also add ½-1
teaspoon of baking soda and leave
out the honey, or use both.
Pour 1 cup of warm water, which is
used to melt the honey, into the jar,
and stir well.
When you need to freshen up your
breath, give it a quick shake and
swish/gargle 1-2 tablespoons for 1
minute.
and dry mouth. Coconut water helps
repair damaged tissues in the body
and keeps your joints functioning
properly at all times. What You Will
Need:
3 cups of coconut water
1 cup of strawberries
1 cup of fresh water
1 cup of ice
⅛ teaspoon of sea salt
2 tablespoons natural sugar or honey
Directions:
Blend everything in a blender and
drink as a healthy shake.
4. Honey and Brown Sugar Scrub:
Dry Skin
Honey and brown sugar combine to
exfoliate and moisturize the skin. The
mixture fights acne and wrinkles while
cleansing the pores at the same time.
Make sure you use a toner after the
treatment process to remove any
excess oil. What You Will Need:
2 1/4 cups brown sugar
½ cup olive oil
¼ cup honey
1 tsp vanilla
¼ tsp cinnamon (optional)
Directions:
In a bowl combine all ingredients until
fully mixed.
Store the mixture in an airtight
container.
Tie the jar with bakers twine, add a
wooden spoon, and you have the
perfect sugar scrub gift.
Ginger helps alleviate symptoms of
inflammation while promoting proper
blood circulation. Honey contains
many essential enzymes that prevent
harmful bacteria, such as E. coli and
Candida, from entering your
body. What You Will Need:
1 cup of honey
3. Honey and Coconut Water
1 tablespoon finely chopped ginger
Drink: Sore Muscles
5. Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey:
root
Acid Reflux
A pinch of ground ginger (optional)
Directions:
Pour 1 cup of honey into a saucepan
and add 1 tablespoon of finely
chopped gingerroot.
You can add a small pinch of ground
ginger if you’d like as well, but it does
have a strong flavour.
On low heat let the mixture sit for 10
minutes.
When it’s done let it infuse for 2 hours

advantage is their high amounts of
fibre and starch, which slow down the
release of sugar into the bloodstream.
Beans are also extremely beneficial for
your heart's health, digestive system
and cholesterol control. Get into the
habit of adding these to your meals,
especially green beans, which are
surprisingly low in calories!
Tip: Use beans for bean soups, or if
you're not a fan of this, add them as
a topping to your salad or sandwich.
8. Watermelon
Calories: Depends on the type of
bean:
Baked beans - 155 per 100g
Green peas - 81 per 100g
Green beans - 31 per 100g
Beans are loaded with water, which
gives them a heavy consistency and
makes them perfect tummy fillers.

Honey Cough Drops The natural
antibiotics contained in apple cider
vinegar helps prevent gastric acid from
entering the stomach, which causes
reflux problems. The cider and honey
work together to promote healthy
digestion. What You Will Need:
1 cup of honey
2-3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
Directions:
Add 1 cup of honey to a saucepan,
and then pour in 2-3 tablespoons of
apple cider vinegar.
Allow the mixture to heat over low
flame for 10 minutes, stirring well
about halfway through.
Place the mixture into a jar and let it
sit for a while or until you are ready to
use.
It doesn’t need to sit as long as
something like cinnamon sticks or
cloves would.
6. Fenugreek Seeds, Honey and
Ginger Remedy: Asthma
source Fenugreek seeds help fight off
respiratory problems, such as asthma
and bronchitis. Honey helps prevent
airway constriction, which occurs when
mucus accumulates in the bronchial
tubes. Ginger contains many natural
anti-inflammatory properties that allow
you to breathe better. What You
Will Need:
2 teaspoons fenugreek seeds
2 teaspoons ginger paste (make it
from fresh ginger root)
1 teaspoon honey
4 cups of Water
Directions:
Add the fenugreek seeds to water, and
allow them to simmer for 30 minutes.
Strain the water after 30 minutes.
Put the ginger paste into a sifter and
press to extract it’s juice.
Add the ginger juice to the water you
just strained.
Add honey to this solution and mix
well.
Calories: 30 per 100g
The most filling food that also has the
lowest calorie count must be
watermelon. This juicy and irresistible
fruit's content is packed with water, as
well as fibre, which leaves you feeling
full for a good stretch of time. Apart
from that, watermelon is also loaded
with Vitamin C, and it's delicious what beats that? Reach out for some
slices of watermelon when hunger
strikes for full satiation.
Tip: Snack on 2 cups of diced
watermelon to provide yourself with
half the recommended daily intake of
Vitamin C. You may even want to
prepare one cup combined with some
dices of reduced-fat feta cheese and 1
teaspoon of chopped mint, for one
satisfying treat.
Drink a glass every morning. 7. Clove
and Honey: Toothache
Cloves contain a pain-relieving
anesthetic called Eugenol that is used
to treat toothaches and gingivitis.
Honey acts a natural antiseptic that
kills germs and bacteria, which add to
the infection. What You Will Need:
1 cup of honey
5-10 whole cloves
Directions:
Pour 1 cup of honey into a saucepan,
and then add 5-10 whole cloves.
Heat for 10 minutes, over a low
flame, before letting it infuse for 2
hours or up to 2 weeks, placing it in a
jar with a tightly fitting lid.
Strain when it’s finished (optional).
