Formatting Student Friendly Tests

Test Readability
• Eliminate unnecessary words, especially in multiple-choice
• Use synonyms when possible
• Use simple sentence construction & present tense verbs as
much as possible
•Use shorter sentences
•Make sure students can read vocabulary words
Test Format
• Capitalize and underline words such as ALWAYS, NEVER, NOT
• Use short-answer, true/false, fill-in-the-blank responses rather essay
type tests
• Alternatives to multiple-choice answers should be brief
• Avoid negatively-stated questions, especially in true/false
• Use 10 items or less on matching lists
• Provide short-answer alternatives if you want them to be spelled
correctly
Test Length and Variety
• Allow plenty of time if you want your test to be valid
• Some students may require tests to be read to them
• Use at least 3 question formats on a major unit test
• Give 2 short tests rather than one lengthy exam
• Use arrows and other tracking aides to assist students in keeping their
place
Test Appearance
• Copies should be distinct, clear, clean
• Use a large type or large printing when preparing a test
• Ample margins and spacing
• 1 ½” border at top & bottom
• 1” border on each side
• Minimum of 2 spaces between questions
• Multiple choice alternatives should be placed vertically
