Multi-field search
1. Click on Multi-field search to do a more detailed search.
2. Enter your search terms into the boxes provided. Put one search term, or
set of alternative search terms, in each box as shown below. Combine
keywords using AND. Use OR between each alternative keyword.
Use the drop down menu(s) to search for terms in different areas or fields
of the journal record, e.g. select Abstract to only show results that use
your keywords in the abstract of the article. Click Search
3. On the results page, you can select View Abstract to show the summary of
the article. If you wish to view the whole article, select the Pdf icon if it is
available, alternatively click on 360 Link to Full Text and the database will
link you to the full text if it is available. If it does not link you through, then
we do not hold the full text online.
Searching by subject heading
Each article that goes into an Ovid database is assigned certain subject headings
depending on the major and minor themes of the article. You can search using
these subject headings rather than selecting individual keywords and alternative
keywords.
1. To search using subject headings, select the advanced search option
Page | 3
Ovid databases
2. Type in the theme or subject of what you are researching e.g. fall
prevention, and tick the box to ‘Map Term to Subject heading’ and click
Search
3. On the results page, any related subject headings to your search will
show. You can select one or more subject headings. The database will
automatically combine the subject headings with an OR, this can be
changed to AND as shown on the example below. Click continue to run
the search
N.B. In some Ovid databases, the subject heading is a link. If you click the link it
will ‘explode’ the subject heading into small segments. This can help narrow your
search if you are using a broad subject heading.
Tip: If you are unsure of the meaning of the subject heading, hover over
to get the scope note of the subject heading
4. On the results page, you will see only articles that match your subject
headings. You can select View Abstract to show the summary of the
article. If you wish to view the full article, select the Pdf icon if it is
available, alternatively click on 360 Link to Full Text and the database will
link you to the full text if it is available. If it does not link you through, then
we do not hold the full text online.
