Searching The ere are two main meth hods of sea arching mo ost of the O Ovid databa ases: the b basic search and the e multi-field d search. Bas sic Search h here e basic sea arch uses “ffree text” w which mean ns it will se earch for wo ords anywh The in a record. Th his can be useful for ssearching jargon j or n new words or phrasess. You u can also type t in que estions or essay e titless. To comp plete a basic search: 1. Type ke eywords orr a sentencce into the search boxx and clickk search 2 On the results pag 2. ge, the artiicles are au utomaticallly sorted byy score. Th he score in n an Ovid d database sshows how w relevant e each article e is to your search terms, for example 5 stars shou uld match all your search termss and e usually on n only partt of your se earch. You can selectt View 4 stars or less are ary of the a article. Click on Multi-field search to do a more detailed search. 2. Enter your search terms into the boxes provided. Put one search term, or set of alternative search terms, in each box as shown below. Combine keywords using AND. Use OR between each alternative keyword. Use the drop down menu(s) to search for terms in different areas or fields of the journal record, e.g. select Abstract to only show results that use your keywords in the abstract of the article. Click Search 3. On the results page, you can select View Abstract to show the summary of the article. If you wish to view the whole article, select the Pdf icon if it is available, alternatively click on 360 Link to Full Text and the database will link you to the full text if it is available. If it does not link you through, then we do not hold the full text online. Searching by subject heading Each article that goes into an Ovid database is assigned certain subject headings depending on the major and minor themes of the article. You can search using these subject headings rather than selecting individual keywords and alternative keywords. 1. To search using subject headings, select the advanced search option Page | 3 Ovid databases 2. Type in the theme or subject of what you are researching e.g. fall prevention, and tick the box to ‘Map Term to Subject heading’ and click Search 3. On the results page, any related subject headings to your search will show. You can select one or more subject headings. The database will automatically combine the subject headings with an OR, this can be changed to AND as shown on the example below. Click continue to run the search N.B. In some Ovid databases, the subject heading is a link. If you click the link it will ‘explode’ the subject heading into small segments. This can help narrow your search if you are using a broad subject heading. Tip: If you are unsure of the meaning of the subject heading, hover over to get the scope note of the subject heading 4. On the results page, you will see only articles that match your subject headings. You can select View Abstract to show the summary of the article. If you wish to view the full article, select the Pdf icon if it is available, alternatively click on 360 Link to Full Text and the database will link you to the full text if it is available.
