DAILY JOURNAL, Weekender, April 24, 2010 Important meeting for incoming freshmen and parents set April 27 The Vinita High School will host a Parent Night for parents of 8th graders on Tuesday, April 27, at 6 p.m., in the high school commons area. This is a time for parents to learn about freshmen enrollment, class offerings, graduation requirements, and other pertinent information. Incoming freshmen students are encouraged to attend as well. Master schedules and enrollment forms will be given out that night for parents and students to take home and go over before 8th graders actually enroll on Thursday morning, April 29. The Fine Arts Festival includes drama, music, instrumental performances, multimedia, and multicultural foods. Everyone is invited to attend the festival which features the talents of students of all ages from all school sites. by Rozi Caraveo/Varsity Blue The 6th annual Vinita Public Schools Fine Arts Festival has been scheduled for Tuesday night May 4, at 7pm and Thursday night May 6 at 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. throughout Ewing Halsell Middle School. On Tuesday night, speech and drama instructor, Wendy Brown’s students will perform a series of skits in the auditorium. Everyone is welcome to attend a free concert featuring young Christian rock Also on that same night, contemporary Christian recording artist Elizabeth Montgomery will group A Road Less Traveled, on Tuesday night, at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church. sing. Thursday night artwork from a combination of Vinita Public Schools pupils will be on display in the Ewing Halsell gymnasium. In the gym, the multimedia instructor Shelley Reed’s Advanced Broadcasting Class will be showing all their films that have been created throughout the year. In one corner of the gym, a various set up of street performers will be playing several instruments, such as, Brice Reheard strumming his guitar. The art club will also be doing ‘Characiture’ drawings as part as a fundraiser. That night, the auditorium will host several choir members from the different schools a part of VPS. The cafeteria will be filled with all types of authentic Hispanic food available to the public for $3 a plate. All proceeds will go to the Vinita High School Spanish club. The Advanced Broadcasting Class of VHS will also be showing a memorial video in tribute to school board member Kimsey Wade, who passed away a few weeks ago. Explain how you hope to help your tribal community respond to this challenge and improve its future.” See contest rules below for complete details and submission requirements. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: In preparation for writing, students should draw from their own personal knowledge and research information from a variety of sources. Primary and secondary source material could include: historical and reference material, interviews, personal experiences, oral testimonies, official documents, diaries, letters, autobiographies, newspapers, academic journals, films and television movies, CD-ROM, and Internet sources. ELIGIBILITY The 2010 Young Native Writers Essay Contest is open to Native American high school students currently enrolled in grades 9-12 only. All students participating in Young Native Writers Essay Contest should have a significant and current relationship with a Native American tribal community. PRIZES The following prizes will be awarded to winning essayists: Five (5) First-Place Winners will each receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., (tentatively scheduled for July 20-24, 2010) to visit the National Museum of the American Indian, and other prominent sites. The winners will be accompanied by the teachers who inspired their entries into the contest. First-Place Winners will receive a special award for display at home or school. In addition, each First-Place Winner will receive a scholarship of $2,500 to be paid directly to the college or university of his or her choice. Entry Deadline is May 10, 2010.
